"There are many Randolphs who are descendants of Pocahontas, the heroic Indian maiden who saved the life of Capt. John Smith in 1607 when he was about to be executed by Chief Powhatan. Pocahontas later became a hostage of the Jamestown Colony and was converted to Christianity. Colonist John Rolfe fell in love with her, and they were married on 5 April 1614. In 1616 Rolfe took Pocahontas and their infant son Thomas to England, where they were presented to the king and feted for seven months. Pocahontas, exhausted by the ordeal, became ill and died the day before their scheduled return. John and the two year old Thomas Rolfe returned to Virginia, where Thomas grew to manhood and married Jane Poythress. From this uniion decended thousands of people, including educators, ministers, and lawmankers. Richard Randolph of Curles, the fourth son of William of Turkey Island, married JANE BOLLING, the great-granddaughter of Pocahontas, from whom sprang many Randolph descendants.
