HI... the following listing came from the Melungeon listing... Just hought it might be interesting to someone.. Thanks!! kaite.. ubj: [Melungeon-L] Pamunkey: Collins', Bollings, etc. Date: 98-07-12 23:54:11 EDT From: Leecanipe@aol.com Reply-to: Melungeon-L@rootsweb.com To: Melungeon-L@rootsweb.com Dear Cousins: I don't really have any info on the Pamunkey Indians, in terms of genealogy. I would also like to find some info (so everybody keep an eye open!). Collins and Bolling are the only two names I'm aware of, oh and Randall, Randolph, and Smith... these are also associated with the Pamunkey. Oh yeah, and Bass... I'm sorry I'm really tired :) My Bolling ancestors were neighbors and kin to the Collins' (although my direct line does not include Collins ancestors). The interbreeding of English & Pamunkey began very early-- remember Pocahantas? There are an estimated 55, 000 descendants of Pocahantas, and she only had one son! Ironically, descendants of Pocahantas were to be considered "white" during the days of racial segregation. Since the Indians did not keep records, it was difficult to tell who Pocahantas' grandchildren (Indian Grandchildren) were, so the exemption was extended to all Pamunkey. This is why many people who can trace back to the early English and Pamunkey breedings are always listed as white. I've also read that the descendants of Civilized "outstanding" Indians, such as some Cherokee, were to be considered white. I believe this means Indians who saved whites from danger, etc. Not 100% sure, to so take that as Gospel. Anyhow, there are many who have Pamunkey ancestry. Lee :-)
