    1. Bolens of Lawrence County, Alabama from North Carolina or VA
    2. KJohns7900
    3. The progenitor of my husband's Bolens in Pontotoc County, MS appears to be Robert Bolen born about 1787 in N.C. who settled in Lawrence County, Alabama. One of his sons thought he was born in VA. I would like to know what family Robert could fit into. He appears to be related to Elijah C.Bolen reportedly born in Tenn. in 1790 (another correspondent states 1810.) Elijah married Jane Beachem. A son of Robert was Brantley B. Bolin b. about 1807 in SC or VA. He married Emily McNutt in 1820 and then Mary Ann Caroline Aldridge in 1836 in AL. He is not the same as the Brantley Bolen of Bibb County, AL. Polly (Mary) Bolen married Andrew Suggs in 1822 in AL. She was born about 1806 in GA. Frances Bolen married Joseph Bishop in 1839 in AL. Nancy Bolen b. 1815 in TN married Sanford Wesson in 1829 in AL. Sarah Bolen married James R. Bishop in 1840 in AL. Robert Bolen Jr. was born in 1824 in AL. He married Jane Clark in 1846 in MS. William A. Bolen was born in 1825 in AL. He married Elizabeth Rayner in Itawamba Co., MS in 1849. These Bolens appear to be siblings, their father being Robert Sr. Their mother probably died before 1850. Her name is unknown Our Bolens seemed to have moved from NC or VA to GA to SC? to TN to AL to MS. Robert Sr. stayed in AL and was remarried to a Frances___. Other Bolens were Jacob, Alexander and Abram living in Lawrence County, AL. I would like to know if these were brothers of Robert, Sr. born about 1787. Any information about these Bolens would be appreciated. Kathy Johnston

    3. I am seeking information on my husband's ancestor John Thomas Bolen b.about 1847 in Itawamba County, Mississippi. He m. Sarah Louisa Reaves Sept 11, 1873 in Lee County MS. His parents were Robert Bolen and Jane Clark (m. 1846 in Itawamba Co). Robert's mother probably was Elizabeth and his siblings were Willoughby, William and Martha E. Was Robert's father also Robert? John T. Bolen was murdered by a cousin Thomas B. Bolen in 1877 in Pontotoc County MS. I would like to find newspaper articles written about this murder and the trial. This murder was likely reported in Tenn and Ala as well. Please send suggestions on what newspapers to look in. I would like to correspond with anyone having pedigrees on the Bolens from Pontotoc Co. and the surrounding areas in Mississippi. They came from Ala. I am especially interested in Elijah b. about 1790 in TN, Brantley Bolen b. about 1807, VA, William (brother of Brantley,) John A. and Robert (Sr?) Were these brothers and who were their parents? They likely were related to the Bollings. Thanks, Kathryn Johnston

    3. Hi all, Regarding the question on the Indian names, and the "Crazy" Judge. Judge John Robertson was the brother of Wyndham Robertson. A related family of Judge Robertson wrote of him that John himself said God spoke to him in a clear voice and old bible English to write the story of the descendants of Pochahontas. The Judge told this on himself. The information of the use of the Indian names comes from yet another Judge, Zelma Price. She ran down old letters and bible records. All of this information came out months ago on the Baker-Bolling List, complete with sources, quotes, etc. I enjoy working here with everyone, but I conclude we can never get anywhere until we all have some idea of what is available in the way of information. Otherwise we will spend our time going over the same things again and again. Several of us have gotten together and are forming a Newsletter on the Internet. Our first effort has been to list all the known reading material we can find on the Bolling Families. We hope to find and publish a list of Titles and the source, where one might get a copy, of each and every Bolling genealogy ever published. The Newsletter will also be the place to publish those things we are finding, and have it there for everyone to read. For example: How many of you have researched something only to find this was had been done earlier by someone else? The Newsletter can help to solve those sorts of problems. I enjoy genealogy, but must close down several lists, as this is our busy season. I just don't have the time. I will work on the Newsletter, with Leslie and others, and share what we are finding, "in the Newsletter". So see you there. Ken

    1. Add Bowling
    2. Hi, I was wondering if anyone could help me? My 3rd gr grandfather was Ad or ADD Bolling/Bowling. His parents were James Bar Creek Jim Bowling and Martha Benge. Ad was born in 1846 in KY. I believe he was born in Clay Co. I understand that he campaigned for jailer at one time and as part of his campaign strategy he had a poster made with him sitting up on a mule. I would love to find a picture of that poster or a copy of it. Also, Ad and his wife Eliza Benge had a daughter, Mahala. She was my 2nd gr grandmother and was married to George Harvey H. Hensley. According to census records , Mahala was living near her father in 1880 , listed as age 21, with two children, Alford (my gr grandfather) age 2 and Newtin age 4/12. I cannot find Mahala any later than that in census records. No one knows what happened to Newtin. There is a marriage record for George and Mahala dated March 29,1877. There is a Lige Bowling that somehow fits into this picture . He signed for Alford to get married. It is possible that this Lige Bowling married Mahala later, as she went on to have two other children, Jim Bowling and Frank Bowling. I cannot find a date or place of death for George Hensley. If anyone can provide further information on this family, I would appreciate it greatly. Thanks, Kay-

Alex is in Lincoln Co., TN in 1810 and Madison Co., Al by 1811. He died in Lawrence Co., AL in 1843. Alexander's only known brother (proven by his will) is William b 1784 NC who is also in Grainger in 1805. William is in Madison Co., TN. by 1821 when it is opened to white settlement . He also lived in Haywood, Hardeman and Gibson counties of Tenn and Marshall Co., MS (ca 1850) over the next 50 years. There are other Bowlings living in these counties at the same time as William including Lewis, Thomas (2 or3), James, Isham, Joseph, David, Green, Burgess, Daniel and John. William died in 1870 in Hardeman or Obion Co., TN. During The War of 1812 both brothers would have been 31 and 28 years old and probably participated in The War of 1812. Coffee's Regiment, Tenn. Vol., War of 1812 was formed in Franklin, Tenn. just south of Nashville, (100-120 miles from Lincoln Co., TN). There is an Alex and William Boling in John Baskerville's company of Coffee's Regiment. Alexander and Elizabeth had the following children: Preston, b 1803 TN m 1 Cintha McWorther, 2 Ester J. McAfee, 3 Mary Ann Reynolds, Mildred b 1806 TN m Thornsberry Wilkerson, James M. b 1815 AL unmarried, George W. b 1818 Al m 1 Elizabeth C. Walton, 2 Felicia Olivia Bowers, 3 Laura Brooks, Alexander B., b 1819 Al, m Mahala Coopwood, William H. b 1824 m Rebecca Reed, and Permelia b 1826 m Andrew Jackson Walton. Goodspeed reports 11 children in all, thus 4 missing.. William and Mary had the following children: Lucretia b 1812 Al or TN m Thomas Yandell, Nancy Ann b 1817 m Francis A. Edney, Isham Merriman b 1824 TN m Betsy Minerva White (note: There is an Ishma Merriman living in Mecklenburg Co.,NC in 1800 who moved to west TN by 1810, is he namesake?), Alexander b 1826 TN m Sarah Jane Davies, Mary Adeline b 1828 TN m Ashburn Davis, Emaline T. b 1836 TN m William Henry , and Matilda C. b? m John C. Davie. Have wondered if my ancestors are connected to Benjamin since several of his descendants are in the Grainger area 1800-1810 or possibly the Clay Co., Ky Bowlings. Does anyone know anything that might help me. Larry Bowling

    1. Bowlings of a different color
    2. Lewis Bowling
    3. I'm not sure what color the Bowlings of my family are but I'd appreciate any connections you may have. The first member of the branch in America was Jessie Bowling, b. about 1754 in England. He was supposedly kidnapped to Maryland around the time of the Revolution. I have a photocopy of a marriage bond to Sarah Robertson, signed (with an X) by Jessie and John Robinson (father of Sarah with one or both misspelled?) dated September 1785, Cumberland Co., VA. The family soon made its way to Mercer Co., VA (WV) and settled there for the next 150 years or so. Jessie had several children, including William, Thomas, Nancy, Betsy, and John (my ggg grandfather). John (b. ca. 1800 in Giles Co., VA, - d. ca. 1875) married Sallie (Sarah?) Walker (b. 1805 in Giles Co. - d. ca. 1900) on Dec. 23 1824 and they settled in Spanishburg, Mercer Co., WV. Related families include WALKER, LILLY, BRAMMER, HOUCHINS among others. There is a family legend that John's son Charles Albert Bowling was offered tribal land in Indian Territory but preferred to remain in WV. I have no documentation, but I do know there are Bowlings on the Dawes Roll. If any of you have any further info, I'd sure appreciate hearing from you and would be glad to exchange relatives. I have a fairly extensive tree, but there are a lot of loose ends. Lew Bowling lbowling@pop.uky.edu

    3. Ken, I would like to know where this is cited that Judge John Robertson was 'crazy' or is this just a term you have coined for him because of his errors in the book? Is he the same John Robertson who wrote the OPUSCULA? Do you have a copy of this book you keep referring to as having mistakes? What is the date on that book? The one I have is called Pocahontas Family and is by Wyndham Robertson, 1887. Does anyone have a copy of the Bolling Memoirs? I keep seeing it referenced and wondered exactly the author of this as well as the date it too was written. I am still waiting on a reply as to where it is cited about how the "ugly Bollings" got this nickname too. I am also still waiting on the name of the Bolling parent (that is said to have used the indian names of Pocahontas, etc. first BEFORE those that were used by John II (of Cobbs) and Elizabeth -- this has been mentioned more than once on this list and I still do not find a reference to these individuals. Please send the names and dates of these parents and the childrens names. Thanks, Judy M. You wrote:
