    2. Ed & Phyllis Griffith
    3. Hi, In response to Ken's question about who the parents of Mary Peasants Bolling were: GRANDPARENTS: John Bolling, b. 6 Jan.,1756, Halifax (part that later became Pittsylvania, and still later Henry) Co., VA, d. 17 June 1835, Sullivan Co., Tenn., buried Bolling Family Cemetery, Sullivan Co., TN. Married Dec. 25, 1977, Charlotte Co., VA to Mary Tarpley. Mary was born 21 March 1760, Lunenburg (part that later became Charlotte) Co., VA; died 5 April 1836, Sullivan Co., TN. She is also buried in the Bolling Family Cemetery, Sullivan Co., TN. (The story is that John and Mary married at Christmas just before the Tarpleys left for South Carolina). The PARENTS of Mary Pleasants Bolling were John Tarpley Bolling, often called John, Jr. and Mary Pleasants, his wife. John Tarpley Bolling was born in Henry Co, Virginia on Dec 10, 1778. Both John Tarpley and Mary died in Franklin County, Alabama. He died August 12, 1849 and she died the 26 day of Dec. in 1848. About 1830 they moved from Sullivan County, TN to Franklin County, Alabama. Mary Pleasants Bolling was born April 6, 1799 in Sullivan County, TN and died Dec. 23, 1868 in Franklin County, Alabama. She married April 30, 1818 (in the same wedding ceremony with her twin brother) Hiram Weatherbee. He was her 1st cousin, once removed, and also her 2nd cousin, once removed. He was born Jan. 5, 1800 in Sullivan County, TN. He died June 10, 1880 in Franklin County, Alabama. Both are buried in the Bolling Family Cemetery, Franklin Co., Alabama. Mary's twin brother was James Pleasants Bolling. 3. I received a photocopy of this bible record from a distant cousin (Eliza's granddaughter). If these names look familiar please contact me, I have more info to share. I'm very anxious to find out more about Henry McGee and especially Mildred BOWLING. BORN: Henry McGee b. 6-5-1792 d. 9-9-1857 St. Joseph, MO, married to Mildred Bowling b. VA 7-19-1796 d. 4-22-1875 St. Joseph, MO children: Leroy McGee b. 7-29-1819 Sarah Ann McGee b. 12-13-1822, married Wycliff Estes Edward Thornton McGee b.12-4-1823 Melvina McGee b. 6-7-1828 d 10-9-1894 Elias Thomas McGee b. ? James Samuel McGee b? d 5-29-1844 Eliza Jane McGee b. 5-10-1835 d. 7-6-1878, married William L0VELADY William Lewis McGee b. 3-5-1838 Mary Elizabeth McGee b. 7-6-1842 in St. Joseph MO d 8-1936 Augusta, GA, married John LOVELADY (brother of William) and 3 more. I do have info to share on the children of Eliza & William Lovelady and Mary & John Lovelady. Mary Elizabeth's obit states that her father was William, however previously researched info (handed down in my family) lists his name as John Henry McGee~hence Henry listed in the bible. All children are reported to have been born in St. Joseph MO, however I have been unable to locate any birth records, or the parents of Henry and Mildred. I would love to hear from anyone searching for this family! Thank you. Laura campbell@alaska.net

    3. I am sure we all thank you Frankie, I for one am too busy getting my southern genealogy together to get involved with more than finding up my Bolling ancestors at this time. After that I plan to get involved in a study of Gettysburg. One must learn from his mistakes. 3. Perhaps an item of interest.... In 1924, Virginia passes an " Act to Preserve Racial Integrity", outlawing miscegenation and denying certain rights to anyone that was not 100% white. Legislators made an acception to this rule, stating that citizens with one sixteenth Indian blood were classified white, This was done in an effort to save many influential family members of prestigious families from falling under the jurisdiction of this law. 1. Lots of information ???
    2. Ken Poole
    3. Hi all, I have to wonder if someone ought to ask for sources for this sort of information. It's odd we don't. Can someone tell me if the Powhatan (tribe) and the Pamunkeys were the same people? Did anyone ask? (Do you know ?) Virgina laws were extended to the descendants of Pocahontas as white, but what about the others? (no put down, but a search for the truth) We had a rocky history (who didn't), but I think we ought to quote sources, dates of laws, where you found this , etc. Even if history is disagreed with, the facts are facts, right or wrong. Let's tell it the way it was. So call for documentation, that's what the list is trying to do. And for those who might be searching for facts, try Helen Roundtrees book, Pocahontas' People, 1940s, not in hand at the time. Well done up, lots of documentation, English and American records. "The truth shall set you free". Ken

    1. Posting from another listing...
    2. HI... the following listing came from the Melungeon listing... Just hought it might be interesting to someone.. Thanks!! kaite.. ubj: [Melungeon-L] Pamunkey: Collins', Bollings, etc. Date: 98-07-12 23:54:11 EDT From: Leecanipe@aol.com Reply-to: Melungeon-L@rootsweb.com To: Melungeon-L@rootsweb.com Dear Cousins: I don't really have any info on the Pamunkey Indians, in terms of genealogy. I would also like to find some info (so everybody keep an eye open!). Collins and Bolling are the only two names I'm aware of, oh and Randall, Randolph, and Smith... these are also associated with the Pamunkey. Oh yeah, and Bass... I'm sorry I'm really tired :) My Bolling ancestors were neighbors and kin to the Collins' (although my direct line does not include Collins ancestors). The interbreeding of English & Pamunkey began very early-- remember Pocahantas? There are an estimated 55, 000 descendants of Pocahantas, and she only had one son! Ironically, descendants of Pocahantas were to be considered "white" during the days of racial segregation. Since the Indians did not keep records, it was difficult to tell who Pocahantas' grandchildren (Indian Grandchildren) were, so the exemption was extended to all Pamunkey. This is why many people who can trace back to the early English and Pamunkey breedings are always listed as white. I've also read that the descendants of Civilized "outstanding" Indians, such as some Cherokee, were to be considered white. I believe this means Indians who saved whites from danger, etc. Not 100% sure, to so take that as Gospel. Anyhow, there are many who have Pamunkey ancestry. Lee :-)

    2. Rebecca Lambert
    3. Hi, I'm new to the list, so I'm going to post my two Bolings. Wiley Boling (b. late 1700s/early 1800s) was supposedly married to Lottie ??? by 1834. Their only child I know of is Emily Mildred Boling, bc 1834 AL. She married William J. Chaney by 1850, probably in Illinois. Their daughter Martha Elizabeth Chaney b. by 1850 married Joseph Lambert in 1867 in Washington Co., Illinois. Four more Lamberts and you have me! Does anyone have an AL>IL migration of Bolings? This now brings the total to 7,817 names on line along with biographical notes on many of them and the units in which they served. This makes about 12% of the 65,000 men who served from South Carolina, and about 25% of the approx. 30,000 names I have found now on line. Many thanks to the many who have helped to fill in the holes and correct errrors which have been found in the rosters.! I welcome any additional bio. / genealogical info. you may have on the men who served from SC. Enjoy! http://members.aol.com/superstore/sccd.htm
