In the book OLD SETTLERS OF HICKORY TREE BY C. Hopkins the writer relates a story he calls History of Old Cemetery at Hickory Tree. He states " I have before me an old paper dated the 21st day of June 1836 that was presented to me by G. D. ODell who found it while making the rounds of his farm. The paper contains names of subscribers who were to pay for building a plank fence around the cemetery of John M. Blevins Cemetery, now known as Shipley Cemetery." Listed I found Toliver Boling $1.00, Walter Boling, $1.00, Isaac Boling, Jr., 50 cents and Jacob B. Boling, 50 cents. I feel that Tolliver and Isaac had relatives buried there or they would not have contributed to the building of a fence. Most graves in those days were marked with wooden markers or just plain field stones, so I doubt we will ever know for sure where John Sr., Elizabeth, Tolliver, and Telitha are buried. Boling, Sullivan Co., TN John Bolin Sr. and his wife Elizabeth (maiden name unknown) are the foundation of our family tree. John was born in Henry Co., VA about 1759. John Sr. came to Tennessee in the late 1790's or the early 1800's and is found on a deed record of 1808 and the 1812 tax records to be living in Sullivan Co., TN. In July 1814 he filed on a land grant for 125 acres on the North Side of the Holston River in Sullivan Co. This grant was signed by Willie Blount, Governor of Tennessee. The 1840 Census of Sullivan Co., TN shows John's age to have been 80 to 90 years old. The same census shows Elizabeth's age to have been 60 to 70 years old. This would place her birth to be between 1770 to 1780. I have chosen 1775 as her birth date. John Sr. died about 1845, and Elizabeth died between 1840 to 1850 as she is no longer present on the 1850 Census. John Bolen Sr. served in the American Revolutionary War. He records for a pension reads like this: Bolen, John. S.1790 21 Nov. 1832. Sullivan Co., Tenn. John (X) Bolen, Sr., of said county, aged 72, declares he enlisted in 1780 as a minute man from Henry Co., Va., under Capt. Abraham Penn and was marched to Jamestown and joined Col. Carringtons regiment. He guarded the magazine and plantations on the bay and river from the pillage that was daily committed by British troops, who were trying to take Negroes and stock from the citizens. He was within hearing of the guns at Dunmores engagement. He thinks he served five months. A few weeks after returning home to Henry County he was ordered from Henry Court House to Bedford Court House under Capt. Peter Haston and served between two and three weeks in guarding prisoners. He moved to Montgomery County (then Botetourt) and immediately, in a few days of arriving , was drafted to go against the Indians on the Kanawha and marched under Lieut. Isham to a fort on that river. He was there some weeks under Capt. Parris. He served seven or eight weeks. 25 Jan. 1833. Sullivan Co., Tenn. John (X) Bolin Sr., of said county makes statement as to length of his service. He was told by his parents he was born in Henry Co., Va., and is 72 years and some months old. (No jacket showing amount of pension and certificate number is now in file.) I found the following on the TENNESSEE PENSION ROLL OF 1835 REPORT FROM THE SECRETARY OF WAR IN RELATION TO THE PENSION ESTABLISHMENT OF THE UNITED STATES 1835. REPORT IN OBEDIENCE TO RESOLUTIONS OF THE SENATE OF THE 5TH AND 30TH OF JUNE, 1834 AND THE 3rd OF MARCH, 1835. IN RELATION TO THE PENSION ESTABLISHMENT OF THE UNITED STATES, WASHINGTON. JOHN BOLEN, SULLIVAN COUNTY PRIVATE VIRGINIA LINE $23.66 ANNUAL ALLOWANCE $70.98 AMOUNT RECEIVED MARCH 1, 1833 PENSION STARTED AGE 74. (THIS REPORT WAS DONE IN 1835) The land deed records of Sullivan Co., TN show that John Bolin Sr. had three sons. John Jr., Isaac, and Tolliver. At first I also included a Joel Boling as a son as he was listed on a land deed of 1838 where all of John Bolin's Sr. sons put up their land and stock to bail their brother John Jr. out of jail. Why he was in jail I have not been able to determine from the records available, but it must have worked out as they all received their land and stock back. I now think that Joel was probably related in some manner, but as of 1998 I have yet to know exactly how. The records of this period very seldom list women. If John Sr. and Elizabeth had any daughters I have not been able to find them listed in any records. In 1828 John Bolin Sr. sold 125 acres of land located on the north side of the Holston River to John R. Delaney. In 1835 John Sr. gave 56 acres of land to John Jr. and gave Isaac 56 acres of land as the deed states for "love and money". Fifty dollars from John Jr., and One hundred dollars from Isaac. They in turn mortgaged the land back to John Sr. for $150. John Jr. and Isaac were to pay John Sr. back by giving him 36 bushels of corn, 12 bushels of wheat and 300 pounds of pork annually and every year thereafter on the 25 day of December during the natural lives of John Sr. and Elizabeth. If either John or Elizabeth died they were then to pay half the amount of corn, wheat, and pork. John Sr. whose house and garden plot then set on the land of John Jr. was to retain this land as long as he or Elizabeth were still alive. In 1838 John Bolin Jr. sold his land to Benjamin A. Beeler. Isaac Bolin sold his land to William Offield. The land where John Bolin Sr. and Elizabeth lived was not included in this land transfer until after their death. This land then went to Benjamin A. Beeler. John Sr. left 2 tracts of land to Tolliver and this is where he lived. Joel is not mentioned but, he is no longer found on the census either. He may have died or moved away before then. In the 1840 Census of Sullivan Co., TN there is another Larkin Bolin listed in the same house as Tolliver. He probably was related to John Bolin Sr. in some manner as they lived in the same house. Our grandfather Larkin Boling is shown to be a male child between the ages of 5 to 10 years old in this record. His father was Tolliver and his mother was Telitha (maiden name unknown). John Bolin Sr. and Elizabeth also lived in the same house. Tolliver was born about 1805 and died about 1871. Telitha was born about 1812 and died after 1880 but before 1900. Larkin was the only child ever listed for Tolliver and Telitha in any record I could find. Upon Tollivers death he left his land to Larkin and his children. THIS IS HOW I PROVED THAT JOHN BOLIN SENIOR WAS OURS: Know all men by these presents that I John Bolin Senior of Sullivan County state of Tennessee, for and in consideration of the love and affection which I have towards My Grand Son Larkin Bolin (Son of Tolaver) and for his being so kind and attentive to me in my old age. I do therefore give and convey unto my Said grand Son Larkin Bolen One Bay filly two years old this Spring and one red and white pided cow about four years old To have and to hold the same unto the Said Larkin Bolin my grand Son and his heirs forever. This is the answer to who the Bolings were on the 1830 & one family 0n 1870 Census of Sullivan Co., TN I can explain the listings on the 1870 Census of Sullivan Co., TN between the Bolings and Combs. Head of Household is Susan Boling, her husband was Callaway or Gallaway Boling. He died between 1860 and 1870. Their Children as shown on the census: Boling, Charlotte age 32 is their daughter. Combes Amanda age 28 is Amanda M. Boling . She is their daughter. I dont have a marriage date for her, it will probably be found on the VA side. Boling, William G. age 25 is their son. He married Elizabeth Mottern on Nov. 7, 1872 Boling, Jane age 19 is also Drucilla J. Bolling on the 1860 census Boling, Hugh age 18, is listed as Jonathan on the 1860 census. Boling, Andrew age 15. Combes, William age 9, Combes, David age 7 Combes , Mary E. age 9/12 all born in TN. The father may have been working up in the mountains as a lumberman. (I have been told the husbands name is David Combs) The Bollings on the 1830 Census that you refer to are: L08 Isaac BOLIN 020001-201001( he is the son of John Bolin, Sr. and remains in Sullivan Co., TN until his death before 1870) L09 Larkin BOLIN 100101-11111 (He leaves before 1850 and I think he goes to KY. There is also a Joel, & James that I have found in different records that disappear also at the same time. I also believe he is related to John Bolin, Sr. in some manner, dont know how yet.) p. 318 L25 John COMBS 10001-21001 (b 1800-1810, s/o Jonathan COMBS of 1797?) p. 319 L07 John BOLIN 1210001-000101 (He is John Bolin, Jr. the son of John Bolin, Sr. and he leaves before 1850 and I think he might have gone to KY) L08 John BOLIN 000010001-000000001 (This is John Bolin, Sr. and his wife Elizabeth and their son Tolliver. Everyone thinks John and Elizabeth died in 1835 or thereafter, but before 1840, they do not, he is found living with Tolliver(listed as head of household) in the 1840 Census. Tolliver and his wife Telitha have only one child that I can find Larkin. Larkin married Jane Stewart and some of their desc. remain in Sullivan Co., TN to this date.

Hi...For the Louisiana listeners, please note the following...I don't know what happened to the other states; but, this is what happened to Louisiana... Thanks!!! kaite... ==== Subj: [LA] Rescheduled Genealogy TV Program Date: 11/3/98 3:36:10 AM Central Standard Time From: CASHEL3776@AOL.COM (Ley K. O'Connor) Sender: LOUISIANA-ROOTS-L@LISTSERV.INDIANA.EDU (Genealogy for Louisiana.) Reply-to: CASHEL3776@AOL.COM To: LOUISIANA-ROOTS-L@LISTSERV.INDIANA.EDU The Lifetime Channel's "New Attitudes" program which was to include a segment about Online Genealogy with Cyndi Howells, Karen Isaacson, and Brian Leverich was not shown at its previously announced date of October 30th. This unannounced change in programming was the responsibility of the Lifetime Channel and clearly was disappointing to many online genealogists who watched or taped the show for naught. It would appear that the segment about Online Genealogy has been re-scheduled to this Friday, November 6th. Please remember that there is no guarrantee from the Lifetime Channel that they will, in fact, follow their announced scheduling. See http://www.lifetimetv.com/onair/shows/na/friday.html for a program description. Please consult your local TV guide for information about what channel number Lifetime appears on in your area and also for air times for the "New Attitudes" program on November 6th. >> -----------------------------------------------
HI.. This was on another listing that I belong to...Am passing it along for your information.. Thanks! kaite.. ==== Subj: [LAGRANT-L] Genealogical Research Aid Date: 10/28/98 8:23:02 PM Central Standard Time From: cbvacarr@3n.net (Billy Carr) Reply-to: LAGRANT-L@rootsweb.com To: LAGRANT-L@rootsweb.com Thought I'd pay along this information concerning one of the best bargains that I've came across in CD-ROM packages. The Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints (Mormons) is making available to the general public two of their CD-ROM packages for home use. (1) "The North American Vital Records Index", a seven CD-ROM set, lists nearly five million names from 1620 to 1888 taken from church and civil records and from other collections in the U.S. and Canada focusing on marriage records (6 discs) and births and christenings (1 disc). At $19 per set, this is about the cheapest database that I've run across. The LDS accepted my order for this set on a back order basis as they are temporarily out of stock. (2) "The British Vital Records Index", a five CD-ROM set concerning birth and christening records (4 disc) and marriages (1 disc) from 1538 to 1888, priced at $15 per set. This one I received yesterday in the mail and the discs are menu driven and quite easy to use. There is a postage and handling charge. Orders may be placed with the Church Distribution Center, 1999 West 1700 South, Salt Lake City, UT 84104-4233 or by phoning 800-537-5950.
The Lifetime cable TV channel program "New Attitudes" will be featuring a segment on using the Internet for Genealogy this Friday. Cyndi (Howells) will be interviewed and RootsWeb will be featured. See http://www.lifetimetv.com/onair/shows/na/attractions_1026.html for a brief description of the show. See http://www.lifetimetv.com/onair/pg/lpg19981030.html for show times and be sure to check your local listings as well.

I note your connecting families with interest. I have a Dyer female who married a Bowling and another line associated with them that may be connected to the Fugate family. The Fugates were at least friends and acted as witnesses on various transactions. My time frame is late 1700s. The familiy traveled from Virginia to Washington County Kentucky (when it was still Virginia) to Tennessee (briefly) back to Livingston County Kentucky and then into Pope County Illinois. by ca 1810. If you think there might be some connection, I can provide specifics. She died in Arkansas in the early 1990's. (DAR member?) She had information on Rymans. I am researching my Ryman ancestors in TN who came from Germany. Eleanor had info on Reyman/Ryman from Germany. Any help would be appreciated. Ella RYMAN Hauser in Mich.
