Does anyone have information on the ancestors of Elliott Boling. By the 1790s he was in Greenville Co. SC. He died in 1844 in Greenville Co. and his will mentions sons Thomas, Martin, Benjamin, and Jeremiah. There were possibly twin daughters (Rachel and Amelia), too, but the will does not give names. He probably is from VA. Family history has been passed down that these Bolings are descendants of Pocahontas. I would appreciate any help as he is my gggg grandfather and I am having a difficult time finding earlier ancestors. Thanks, Brenda Roberts Shelton

Hi... I have found some places where Census records can be purchased. REMEBER this: I have NOT ordered anything from any of these...so....I don't know what the product really looks like...but...just passing the URL's over to you all. I have been to the sites and toured them.... First one is: A company that offers all US censuses in TIF format on CD-ROM. http://www.allcensus.com/ The other one is: Taken from the following URL: http://www.usgenweb.org/census/location.htm SK Publications has offered to provide a free copy of one of their books containing photocopies of original census pages to those who volunteer to transcribe counties for which they have books. In return, they ask that a notice be put on the uploaded transcription crediting their donation. If you are interested in this offer, please check out their pages and make sure that they have a book for the state and county that you are interested in transcribing. They are located at: http://www.skpub.com/genie/ Hope this helps someone...... kaite... http://www.kaite.com/

>From Katherine Bowling Swigert's book, "Thomas Bowling, his Ancestors of MD, his Descendants of Nelson Co, KY" (privately printed in 1976--she died in 1992). James BOWLING, b. 1636 presumably England, m. 1st 1659 to Anne____? in England; d. 1693 St. Mary's Co, MD left will (below); m.2nd Mary Brooke in MD, dau. of Maj. Thomas Brooke (b. Battel England 23 June 1632.) and Eleanor Hatton (married 1658). Thomas Brooke, son of Robert Brooke and Mary Baker. Eleanor Hatton dau. of Richard Hatton of London, neice of Thomas Hatton, secty to Province of MD. (Note: I have that Thomas' mother was Margaret___?--info from the Brooke family history) Thomas came to MD in 1650 with his father. Eleanor Hatton m. 2nd Henry Darnell. Concrete proof in the will of Richard Gardiner, son of Col. Luke Gardiner, who married Elizabeth Hatton, sister of Eleanor (Annap. 1, Fol.681). "Across the Years in Prince Georges County", by Effie Gwynn Bowie. James did not have children by either wife. Mary Brooke m. 2nd Benjamin Hall, son of Richard Hall, an early immigrant to MD, and his wife, Elizabeth. Benjamin b. 1667 and d. 1721; brought up Quaker, but died Catholic. Justice of St. Mary's Co in 1694; Burgess in Charles Co 1698-1704. Owned Pleasant Hill which is in the immediate vicinity of Hall family lands in Prince Georges Co (Archives MD Vol XX, pg 58, Vol XXII pgs 28, 96 and Annap. Lib. JCI) Benjamin and Mary had two children, a dau Eleanor who died 1702 at age of 5 and a son Francis, who was a great patriot in the Rev War and is still remembered today. Francis married 1718 Dorthy Lowe, dau of Col. Henry Lowe and Henrietta Maria Bennett, dau of Richard Bennett and widow of John Darnell. Francis died at age 80 in 1785. He had six children Francis, Eleanor (m. Digges), Susannah (m. Darnell), Henrietta (m. John Waring), and Benjamin. Mary, widow of James Bowling and Benjamin Hall, married third, Henry Witham in May 1721. James BOWLING, son of ________BOWLING of England; James transported himself at age 14 into the Province of MD in 1649. Proof: Hall of Records, Annapolis Lib. QUE folio 253 Grant of 150 acres in Chesapeake Bay. ...in consideration that James Bowling hath transported himself into this Province, here to inhabit and hath further due to him 100 acres of land....26th day of August 1651...grant to James Bowling all that parcel of land called "Bowlingly" lying on East side of the Eastern Bay, next to Isle of Kent and on the east side of a creek in the said Bay called Coursey's Creek...on the West with the said creek containing and now laid out for 150 acres....Given at St. Marie's under our great seal of our said Province of Maryland the 7th day of Jan in the 27th year of our Dominion over the said Province of Maryland, A.D. 1658. Lieut. of Province-Josias Fendall Endors. Philip Calvert, Secty. This grant is according to certificate and survey by me made. Robert Clark, Surveyor. Certificate to be returned by the last of October next. May 6, 1662. Whereas there hath been a patent drawn for James Boulen hearing 7 Jan 1658, the certificate whereof was returend (by a mistake) but for 150 acres, when it ought to be for 250 acres, as it hath been proved before Philip Calvert, Esq, Chancellor of this Province, ordered upon the said Boulen's petition that his Patent be renewed with an addition of the said 100 acres, arrear to the former patent. Patent renewed and drawn in verbis: James Bowling 250 acres "Bowlingly" .... at London 2 July 1649 Liber 7, No. 5 fol. 75. Hall of Records B.B. fol 177, Annapolis 1663." "James age 22 page 179 (case of Bowling vs. Anderton) in 1658; James age 22 (page 175) in 1658 Published Volumes of the Archives of Maryland Vol. XLI. Page 595 "James Bowlyn, age 25 years...in the year 1655 (Court Proceedings of 1661. James Bowling states that he is grieviously ill that spring (on page following 156-157) and made will to a near relation in Virginia. If interpreted correctly by the writer, this near relation was John Standish which could have been a maternal relationship or a sister, who married into the Standish family. it does, however provide a fairly good basis for the theory that the Bollings/Bowlings of Virginia and Maryland were related. It is assumed that James returned to England in 1658-59 and married for, in 1659, he transported his wife, Anne Boulin, into the Province of Maryland. Proof of this can be found in the Hall of Records, Annap. Liber H, FOlio 147 and in the release of "Bowlingly" in 1663 to William and Elizabeth Calvert...(Archives of MD, Vol LXIX pg 130)." (I can copy these pages to you after I get back from Florida). James BOWLING had brothers Thomas BOWLING and John BOWLING, sister, Elizabeth BOWLING. Thomas BOWLING was in MD by 1691; -- spouse, children unknown. Possibly married a daughter of John and Mary Wheeler (parents of Winnefred who married John SPEAKS, son of Thomas' sister, Elizabeth Bowling SPEAKS.) In 1697 Thomas Bowling returned to England and died there in 1700. Thomas BOWLING had sons John and Roger. It is believed that Roger died before 1700 since John inherited upon the deaths of his father and brother. John BOWLING m. Mary Langworth, dau of William Langworth and Ann Hussey. William Langworth was the son of James and Agatha Langworth (will dated 18 Aug 1660, Annap.) Anne Hussey dau of Thomas Hussey. John BOWLING of Calvert County, MD was believed to be a brother of Thomas and James. John was established in the Province in 1662, and may have arrived at a much earlier date. (pg 12 &13&14--will copy these). Wife Mary (dau of Richard and Susannah Wadsworth??); had sons John and Richard who were under 16 at time of will dated 9 June 1684; proved 22 Nov 1684 in Calvert Co. Witnesses Richard Marsham and John King (Annap. Will Book 3, F LB2) There also appears to have been a daughter, Mary. Mary Bowling, widow of John, married 2nd Benjamin Evans (Lib 9 F32 Annap) Elizabeth BOWLING married Thomas SPEAKE/SPEAKS before 1665. His will, proved 6 aug 1681 in St Mary's Co, MD names wife Elizabeth, son John to inherit at the death or marriage of wife Elizabeth, and "other child" to be in care of his brother-in-law James Bowling. James Bowling is also named executor. (Baldwin, MD Cal of Wills, Vol 1 pg 101). From will of James, we know he had nephews John SPEAKS and Bowling SPEAKS. John SPEAKS married Winnefred Wheeler, b. 1663 to John and Mary Wheeler. Because Elizabeth was not named in will of her brother, James, it is assumed she died before 1692. NOTES: James BOWLING owned estate "Bowlingly" Charles Co; Returned to England 1658-59 and married Anne Boulin; Owned other land in Talbot, St. Mary's and Charles Co. pg 6 of Katherine Bowling's Book Deeds, Liber 0, No.2 Folio___ LaPlata, Charles Co, MD 1736 d. betw 7 May 1692 and 10 Oct 1693; MD Calendar of Wills, Vol 2 Folio 272. Good Morning... This message came from Deep South and I thought I would pass it on to the group. I have been to Kings Mountain, toured the area, and watched the presentations; and, enjoyed it... I have not been to Cowpens; but, would love to attend. The website is very informative, up-to-date; and, I think you will enjoy it!!!! Cousin... kaite.. ================= Subj: 218th anniv of Cowpens Battle Date: 1/2/99 10:00:57 AM EST From: jr@SHELBY.NET (John Robertson) Sender: DEEP-SOUTH-ROOTS-L@LISTSERV.INDIANA.EDU (A discussion list for genealogy in AL, GA, FL and MS) Reply-to: jr@SHELBY.NET (John Robertson) To: DEEP-SOUTH-ROOTS-L@LISTSERV.INDIANA.EDU We are just 2 weeks away from the observance of the Battle at Cowpens to be held at the Cowpen National Battlefield. The Cowpens NB is on SC Hwy 11 off of I-85, 11 mi. n.w. of Gaffney SC. There is a 2-day program on 16-17 January 1998. A detailed listing of the program may be found at http://www.shelby.net/jr/kmnmp/cp.htm by clicking on "events schedule". This schedule was provided by Chief Ranger Pat Ruff, and the is the only such online to my knowledge. This year's observance will be of special interest due to the recent (11-98) release of Dr. Lawrence Babit's full-length and detailed analysis of the battle in his "Devil of a Whipping". One or more reviews of the book can also be found on the above website (click on "book reviews"). Dr. Babits will be present and will speak at 3 p.m. on Saturday 16 January, followed by a book-signing. On Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m., a forum is scheduled in which Dr. Babits will participate. Local scholars of the Amer.Rev., including Dr. Bobby G. Moss, will also be involved. Dr. Babits' new book gives expression of and evidence for some significantly different conclusions regarding the battle, and in particular, the number of participants. I believe that his book will be standard from this point forward. If you are within reasonable driving distance and you are a Rev War buff, you should plan to be there. John Robertson
