I'm an assistant to the Listowner and not researching Bowles, but my advice is to find obituaries, and then follow up with the information given to prove it. They can't be trusted entirely. There are two pay sites that are great: Newspapers.com and GenealogyBank. You may be able to access them via your local public library or a Family History Center. I can use newspaperarchive.com at home using my King County Library system. I just have to put in my library card number! https://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov is free for all, all the time. It does end in 1963. I've cc'd the list so list members might have more advice for you. All the best, Valorie -- http://about.me/valoriez - pronouns: she/her

    3. Shirley, I can't help with recent generations but I can help with your great-grandmother's siblings and most of their children. Findagrave.com shows the tombstones of Ben F Bowles in Walters, OK, and H. S. "Si" Bowles in Rockwall. Their father was Emma's brother, Harry Grant Bowles. Here is the obit of Sheriff Jim Bowles. https://www.resthavenfuneral.com/obituaries/James-Bowles-5/#!/Obituary It says his father was Karl Augustus Bowles, whose tombstone is shown on findagrave. https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/12169926/karl-augustus-bowles His father was Thomas Jefferson Bowles who was born in Georgia, so I doubt that the sheriff is your cousin, even thought his funeral was in Rockwall. Emma Augustus Bowles was the daughter of Bradford Harrison Bowles and Catherine Thorpe. They came to Texas from Illinois. Bradford's parents were from Virginia. (The Harrisons lived in the part that became West Virginia.) I don't know of any of this branch of Bowles in Georgia. The ones who left Virginia went to Kentucky, Tennessee, and Mississippi. Bradford Bowles and his family moved from KY to Illinois and did not come to Texas until after the 1870 census. His brother Watson Bowles was in Texas before 1850 and served in the Texas Cavalry during the Civil War. Bradford was in the Union Army. I think both Bradford and Watson were considered founders of Rockwall. Annette Bowen My great-grandmother was a Bowles.
