I had forgotten about Judith Bowles who died in GA. Wootten, Lemuel Wootten, Powhatan B. Thurmond, Test. This could suggest several theories: 1) Nelson Bowles of GA was part of the Gideon/David Bowles family and not related to William Bowles/Booles (m. Salley Biven) or 2) Nelson Bowles of GA just happened to have a name that is found in the Gideon/David Bowles line, but was not related or 3) Nelson Bowles of GA was related to the Gideon/David Bowles line and William Bowles/Booles (m. Sally Bivens), which would mean William Bowles/Booles was also connected to Gideon/David Bowles. And this last possibility would be very interesting to me because that would suggest my Benjamin Bowles also connects to the Gideon/David Bowles line. The Bennett connection is also very interesting to me. One of the daughters of my Benjamin, Lucy or Lucinda, married a Bennett (she is identified in Benjamin's will as Lucy Bennett). So far, I have not been able to identify her husband. The Bennetts in Montgomery Co. NC seem to be part of this same Reuben Bennett family. I think DNA is the only way to sort out some of this. Do we actually have someone from the Gideon/David Bowles line who is going to participant in the DNA project? That would be terrific. Brenda
Brenda, my Benjamin's daughter, Sarah, married Elijah MAXEY in Brazoria Co., TX in 1833. I mention it because the MAXEYs, JEFFRIES, and BOWLES are intertwined either in marriage or neighborhoods, land, or business partnerships. After my branch of Bowles got to Texas and had families, the surname BENNETT continues throughout several branches of the Bowles/Maxey pairings, both as a first and middle name. The Maxeys were a very prominent family in VA and they have a zillion descendants. Edythe Maxey Clark published a book entitled, "The Maxeys of Virginia" which is 1071 pages long and so big and bulky that it's hard to wrestle it to the pages I want here beside the computer. (Pub. by Gateway Press in Baltimore in 2000.) When I looked up BENNETT in this Maxey book, on page 940 I found: "Jarvis MAXEY, a son of John and Sally (BROOKS) MAXEY, was born in 1809, in Georgia---probably in Oglethorpe County. He moved with his parents to Alabama about 1817, first to Conecuh County and by the late 1820's to Covington County." After he married Martha ROBERTSON (I wonder if this is any connection to the many Robinson and Robersons who the Gulf States BOLES are looking for...) he "married Elizabeth BENNETT (born 1820, South Carolina), in Noxubee County on 4 October 1840." In further exploration, on page 8: "RADFORD MAXEY, the son of Edward and Elizabeth (?) MAXEY, died in 1771 in Halifax County, Virginia,..." His executors were Paul CARINGTON and Joseph FUQUA. Robert COBB also figures into this family of MAXEYs. We've discussed Radford, Fuqua and Cobb on the Bowles list; I don't remember Carington, but he might be in our archives. Radford and Elizabeth Maxey had a daughter, Elizabeth, on page 9, who is mentioned as having married Humphrey BROOKS. All it says here is that Elizabeth d bet. 1783-88, and Humphrey d. 1790 in Rowan Co., NC. I know that you and I both have BROOKS families in our Bowles trees, Brenda. Mine begins with Massilva BROOKS, b. ca. 1746 in Hanover, Lunenberg Co., VA, and d. 26 July 1829 in Clarke Co., GA. She married Obediah HOOPER. Their daughter, Mary HOOPER, married William WHITE, Sr., who was born in 1743 in Lunenberg Co., VA and died 18 Nov. 1818 in Franklin Co., GA. His parents were John WHITE and Phoebe CARTER, who both d. in Lunenberg Co., VA. Page 9: "Cumberland County, Virginia, Deeds, Book 1, pages 116-119." A land deed that said that Radford and Elizabeth MAXEY of Lunenberg Co., VA were selling land to John MAXEY of Cumberland Co., VA in 1749. The deed was witnessed by Joseph BONDURANT, Richard EPPERSON, and George RADFORD and recorded in March of 1750. BONDURANT and EPPERSON have both appeared on the Bowles list. And the EPPERSONs married into both the Bowles and Jeffries families, if you look in our archives and the South Central Kentucky archives. Page 89: Children of John and Elizabeth (MAXEY) RADFORD: John, Susanna, Agnes, George, Richard, Elizabeth, Nancy and Mary. Susanna RADFORD m. Richard EPPERSON Agnes RADFORD m. Dr. Joseph BONDURANT, Sr. When I looked for the surname BUNCH which you cite below, I found on page 117: "William James MAXEY, a son of John and Judith (ROBERTSON) MAXEY, was born in Buckingham County, Virginia, in 1831, and moved to Missouri with his parents when he was about two years old..." "...On 28 September 1862, in Sullivan County, he married Christina BUNCH (born 17 April 1845, Missouri), a daughter of William and Nancy (CLARK) BUNCH." What I mean to show by sending all that to the Bowles list is that once again, these families were huge and tightly interwoven. If any of our members can get their hands on Edythe Maxey Clark's enormous tome to look for their own families, they just might find them. This is a very well-researched and documented book. Or they can go to both the GenForum and RootsWeb surname boards and find the MAXEY board, and ask if any MAXEYs are connected to their own surnames. Folks, please don't ask me to do lookups from this book. I'll do a great deal for our Bowles list members, but that would truly be above and beyond as the book is hard to keep from sliding off the desk or keep it within reading distance so that I can type from it. You'll find it in numerous libraries. When you find a connection to the MAXEYs or any of the other surnames mentioned here, please do tell us all on the Bowles list.
