Thanks, Jim Jim, Since I posted that message to the Bowles list in 2001, Mary Ann Null and I have done a lot of work on this Bowles line. So a word of caution: everything in the chart prior to Thomas Bowles m. Sarah Suit is wrong. We have found that, at least when it comes to the North Carolina lines, the Farquar book is very, very unreliable. Now, having said that, let me give you what we do know about this line. Mary Ann's earliest identified ancestor is Sarah Bowles who left a will in Caswell Co. NC in 1783. Part of Caswell Co. was later cut to form Person Co. and Person Co. bordered Granville Co. Mary Ann's Bowles group lived near the line between Person and Granville Co. We think it is entirely possible that the William Bowles found in Wythe Co., VA in 1850 is a son of John Bowles, Jr., a descendant of Sarah Bowles of Caswell Co. See the chart below which shows the children we have identified for John and his wife Deborah Oakley. Not all of these are absolutely proven, but we have enough records to feel comfortable with this family configuration. Marcus is not a common Bowles name, so when you find a Marcus it's probably this family. The name in this family likely comes from the Oakley side. We haven't found Marcus in NC in 1850 (which may be more evidence that he was in VA). NC. It appears that he never married. Since John, Jr. and Deborah married in 1801 and the first child we have for this family was b. 1806, there are very likely a couple of older kids missing. This William may well be one of them. John Bowles, Jr. was grandson of Sarah Bowles of Caswell Co. At this point, her husband is still unknown. This group came south to NC from Virginia and the marriage of one daughter -- Oney Bowles to Andrew Yeargan -- was recorded in the Goochland Co. area in 1757.
