Dear listers I am looking for the parents of Alfred Ernest White likely born in Old Kent Road, Surrey, England in the 1840s. He immigrated to South Africa and married Anne Rosetta Dalton Brewer in 1865. I found a possible match in the birth certificate of an Alfred Ernest White born Old Kent Road 3 of Feb 1845 to a Francis and Fanny (formerly Bowles) White. In tracing this family for clues I discovered the following. If any of this matches anything you have please pass if on and help me solve the mystery! Other clues are Alfred seems to disappear from British censes after 1861. He named his eldest son Walter FRANCES perhaps after one of the witnesses to his marriage (a Walter) and his father? Thanks for your help, Jessica MORE ON FRANCIS WHTIE FAMILY: Post Office London Directory (Small Edition), 1852 lists a White, Francis, Cooper, Canal Bridge, Old Kent Road 1861 Census lists an 'Alfred E.' between Frederick and Julia. Francis is a Cooper at this time residing at the Peckham Wharf Cooperage. Aug 1865--As Alfred's birthday is in Feb he would have been 20 by this time. 1871 Census says children are: Frederick 27, Julia 20, Fanny 16, Charles 14, Alice 12 and Francis 11. All born Old Kent Road and livinging with parents at St Paul Convent Gardens, Francis is a licenecd victualler [tavern or inn or pub keeper]. The 1881 census finds the family living in Kensington Place Duke of York and lists Fanny's name as Janine but as she is born in the same place as Fanny I expect she is Fanny. Alice is the only child living with them when the census was taken. 1891 finds Francis (76) living with son Charles W.'s family in Newington St. Mary. Charles has wife Eliza E (32) born in the States and son Hebert C (9) born in Bradford, Wiltshire.
