This is getting more confusing by the minute. According to the page at http://files.usgwarchives.net/pa/blair/bios/wiley/wiley09.txt a James B. Bowles was born at Concord, Franklin County, Pennsylvania, October 13, 1839 to Robert and Jane (Ross) Bowles. This Robert Bowles was born in Franklin County in 1796 and resided upon a farm in Fulton county, where he died at the age of fifty-two years which would mean that he died about 1848 (if this is right). He was a son of John Bowles who was born in Scotland. According to this page, Robert married Jane Ross in 1817. She was a native of Maryland, daughter of Samuel Ross. However, according to the page at http://files.usgwarchives.net/pa/blair/bios/sell/bo-bu.txt Robert Bowles was born in Franklin County in 1796 and died in 1856. Now according to the page at http://listsearches.rootsweb.com/th/read/BOWLES/2003-03/1049145606 James B. Bowles had at least two sisters: Catherine Bowles Osborne and Jane Osborne Jordan. "Catherine Bowles, born 1834 in 'Concord, Franklin/Fulton County', PA, daughter of Robert Bowles (1796) and Jane Ross. Robert Bowles was son of John Bowles (John was born in Scotland). Catherine is known to have had at least one brother, James B. Bowles, also living in Altoona. James was a civil war vet, and was at the battle of Chancelorsville; and one sister, Jane Osborne Jordan." This last seems to agree with the census record below. 1860 Federal Census: Pennsylvania, Blair County, Logan Township, Altoona PO, page 404A household 1058/1031 W. W. Osburn - 30 M, teacher, born PA Catharine Osburn - 23 F, born PA Crawford Osburn - 2 M, born PA George Osburn - 10/12 M, born PA James Bowles - 25 M, teacher, born PA Crawford Bowles - 21 M, teacher, born PA I'll think about this some more later.
This is very confusing, I agree. I do not have James or Jane as siblings for Catharine. I am trying to figure out if I reply to you, if it goes to Linnie. Or, do I need to reply through the bowles@ rootsweb.com so that both of you get the info or questions. Thanks so much.
