    3. WARNING... Speculation follows. Looking back at that 1850 census record... 1850 Federal Census: Pennsylvania, Fulton County, Wells Township, page 96A household 61/63 Robert Bowles - 53 M, farmer, born PA Jane Bowles - 50 F, born PA Margaret Bowles - 22 F, born PA Robert Bowles - 21 M, laborer, born PA Ross Bowles - 19 M, laborer, born PA Catharine Bowles - 17 F, born PA Bella Bowles - 16 F, born PA Crawford Bowles - 10 M, born PA We know that some of the ages are wrong. According to his death record, Crawford Bowles was born 13 Jan 1838 which would have made him just a bit past his 12th birthday at the time of the census. Catharine is identified in at least one place as having been born in 1834. And then in the 1860 census she gave her age as 23 which would have her born about 1837. In 1880 she was 44 (born about 1836). In 1880, Margaret (Maggie) said she was 45 which would have her born about 1835; but her cemetery record says she was born in 1827. Now the reason I'm pointing all this out is that I've on occasion seen census records where boys have been identifed as females in an early record, only to be properly identifed as male later on. What has me wondering is who Bella Bowles is in 1850. Could it be that James B. Bowles, who is identified on his cemetery record as James Bell Bowles, was misidentifed in 1850? Could he be Bella? The age is wrong, but as I've pointed out, this family seemed to have trouble getting ages right. Again, you've been warned, this is pure speculation. Perhaps someone can check Blair County PA marriage records to see if "Bella" Bowles married someone.
