I've just discovered a website of the descendants of Benjamin Whitehead and Mary Elizabeth Swepson of Lunenburg and Mecklenburg Cos., VA, at: http://pages.prodigy.net/procyon/swepson/whitehead.html On it are many documents of the 1700's which trace the families and their activities not only in VA but elsewhere. Some of the names found there could help us put our Bowles families together, so I highly recommend it. Many of these names tie in not only to Bowles but to Jeffries families---so of course I'm eager to see if any of these names ring a bell with anyone on the list.
