    3. ===================================================================== Match: Bowles Source: GEN-MAT-L@rootsweb.com From: "Helen" <Helenh@pdq.net> Subject: Rutherford County, Tennessee - See Some Names Land Deed Genealogy of Rutherford County, Tennessee, Volume 1, 1804-1813 - Earliest Land Grants on Stones, Duck & Elk Rivers, Helen C. & Timothy R. Marsh, 2001. Blue cloth covered hardback with gilt imprinting, 5-3/4 x 8-3/4, 271 pages, maps (including one showing the waterways), every name index. This book is in as new condition - as are the other two volumes in the set. As each volume has its own index, they will be posted separately; however, if someone wants all three as a set, a price adjustment will be made. The text for each entry comprises almost the entirety of the original deed or grant. These truly are lovely books, and cover not only land, but are used to convey slaves and other items of personal property. All give the names of the parties, the consideration (price), the acreage, the boundaries-given in poles, names of those with adjoining property, dates, and waterways. The Military Grants (most from North Carolina give the warrant numbers both for Tennessee and North Carolina or whatever state the service was rendered in, and if the land was granted to the heirs or to an assignee or to the actual soldier. The book holds a number of estate divisions which are particularly valuable. Per the Introduction, we learn that Rutherford was created by the Tennessee general Assembly on October 25, 1803, with the first court being held January 3, 1804. Created from Davidson and Williamson Counties, and major parts of Bedford, Lincoln, Moore and a small western strip of Coffee Counties were once a part of Rutherford. So, the land transactions herein are applicable for a number of counties. "In 1783 the mother state of North Carolina, surveyed and granted a large tract of virgin land in Middle Tennessee, then North Carolina, to her officers and soldiers of the Continental line, for their service in the late Revolutionary War. The south line of this vast area, called the 'Military Reservation', ran east to west, immediately south of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, the county seat of Rutherford Coutny. Much of the land located in Rutherford was granted in this Military Reservation. Rutherford County, like other Middle Tennessee Counties, suffered some land deed losses, attributed to the Civil War. Fortunately the earliest deeds that included the Military and old North Carolina General Land Grants in Rutherford, Bedford and Lincoln Counties survived the losses. Books G, 1, 3, P, T, V, 6, and 12 did not. This book is a complete, not selected, deed copy."
