Hi Gracie I have seen your inquire about William Bowles and Sarah Preston and I would like to help if I can. I am related to William Allen Bowles and Sarah Preston. I am sure this is the William Bowles you are referring to when you said he was married to Sarah Preston. I too am working on my tree and still trying to find out when WA & Sarah they arrived in America, where they landed and the ship they came over on. I know many people from our branch and doing the same, but I seem to have lost touch with them . Hoping to reestablish contact with them. Maybe then I can trace family in England. I am now living here and it's sad that I can't knock on a few doors and over turn as few headstones to uncover ancestors here. You will see dozens of men named William Bowles. I myself am named Ralph William Bowles from Gary Indiana. My dad was born on Hump Mountain., W.V. This is all we know about William Allen and Sarah: The original settler, whose name was William Allen Bowles, was an Englishman who crossed the Atlantic Ocean shortly after the signing of the Declaration of Independence by the thirteen American colonies. His wife's name was Sarah (Sally) Preston, she was Irish. Both he and his wife crossed the Atlantic Ocean on the same ship before their marriage, both were unable to pay for their transportation. They were arrested and sold for the amount of their ship fare across the sea to New York(???). William Allen Bowles was sold to a tanner, and Sarah Preston was sold to a baker, each for a term of seven years. After the expiration of this long period they were married, and removed to Franklin County, Virginia. They had two sons, Edmond and David. David is my 3rd great-grandfather. *Bowles, William Allen (*1770 - <1850) (Exact date of birth ?) 4th great-grandfather b. in ?? England (WHERE?) d.
