It is on record that an attorney in difficulties once enlisted in the life guards & before he had been six mos at his new profession half the men of the regiment were demanding their discharge on the grounds that they had been illegally enlisted. Major Waterfield served the whole of the operations in Scinde & Affghanistan in 1839-40-41-42 & was occupied in the presidency in the difficult engagements leading to the re occupation of Cabul by the force under Gen Nott (Medal).
