Bowles SOURCE: The news item noted below was from a collection of obits compiled by Olive Belcher and shared by her nephew, Fred Belcher. For the most part, the items in the collection had no source or date. Those that were dated seemed to be from the 1920s and 30s. There were several items from the Bloomington (Indiana) Evening World, so perhaps that was her paper of choice. With some effort, it should be possible to determine a generalized time when the item appeared. NO WORD COMES The Whereabouts of James A. Bowles Yet Unknown and Family in Search The announcement in yesterday's Telephone that the family and friends were uneasy as to the whereabouts of James A. Bowles created unusual interest. He is well and favorably known in Bloomington, though born and raised in Paoli, and is held in the highest regard. The family has been uneasy about him for more than a week and has been making many inquiries. Mr. Bowles is a student at Purdue University at Lafayette, where he is taking a course in pharmacy, and decided to spend part of his holiday vacation at Chicago. He was to return here Sunday or Monday a week ago but did not come, and then he was expected home Tuesday or Wednesday of last week at the latest. When he did not come by Wednesday, a message was sent to the Majestic Hotel at Chicago asking if he was still there, and a reply came that he had paid his bill Tuesday afternoon, and they presumed (he) had started for home. This news created much more uneasiness, and to be doubly sure, another message was sent to the Majestic clerk and virtually the same answer was again received. Upon the receipt of this confirmation of this news, W. T. Bowles, the druggist, went to Chicago and spent the day in making inquiry. It was found that he had gone up on the Monon train from Lafayette with Mr. Dodd, traveling auditor of the Monon, and had stated that he expected to return to Bloomington in a few days. Nothing, however, was learned of him while in the city than the information already given by the hotel people, and Mr. Bowles returned to Bloomington. Last night the brother, W. T. Bowles, the well known druggist, went to Chicago and will begin a systematic search of the city through the police. The family is very uneasy, naturally fearing foul play. This grows out of the fact that Mr. Bowles always wore two or three very valuable diamonds, and the fear is that these would have induced someone to commit crime to secure the jewelry. He probably had $600 worth of jewelry with him. Dr. Bowles, the father of James Bowles, lives at Paoli and is one of the substantial citizens of southern Indiana. He went to Lafayette Monday a week ago, then Chicago, remaining there until Friday. He was accompanied by a young man by the name of Burch, a fellow student of Purdue, who assisted in making the search, but nothing availed. Dr. Bowles is now at his home in Paoli awaiting developments. So far as known, the son told no one of his intention to remain in Chicago or to go elsewhere other than to come home not later than last Wednesday-now a week ago. He was expected home for Christmas and had not written anyone of his intention of going to Chicago for a visit, and his whereabouts was only found out by inquiry. ================================================================
