Born November 29, 1926 in Pocahontas, Va. he was a son of the late Walter E. Dalton and Kathleen Whittaker Dalton. He was a member of the Tip Top United Methodist Church. Mr. Dalton served 28 months in the U. S. Army, was a World War II Veteran attached to the 6th Aircraft Repair Unit, and a member of the Barns Beavers VFW Post # 7136 of Tazewell, Va. He was a coal miner and retired after 38 years with US Steel Gary # 14. Claude was a lifetime miner and farmer. He had a special love for his farm. He was a member of the Farm Bureau Federation. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers; and his son-in-law, William Proffitt. Survivors include his wife of sixty five years, Gladys Puckett Dalton; one daughter, Wanda Proffitt-Bowles and husband, Ron of Hardy, Va.; two sons, Sonny Dalton and! wife, Rita of Bluefield, Va. and Garry Dalton and wife, Teresa of Tazewell, Va.; grandchildren, Shannon Proffitt and wife, Debbie, Ronald Proffitt and fiancĂ, Suzzane Catron, John Dalton and wife, Cyndi, Michelle Eller and husband, Robert, Ashley Thornburg, and Wade, Sarah Dalton, Samantha Dalton, and Erin Dalton; great-grandchildren, Tony, Justin, Joey, Johnny, Zachery, Jordon, Levi, Jackie, Rhonda, and Robbie; brothers and sisters, James Dalton of Ohio, Lucy Lawson of Michigan, Arlene Taylor of Farmville, Va., Doug Dalton of Tazewell, Va., and Randy Dalton of Delaware; two sisters-in-law, Betty Donaldson of Memphis, Tenn., and Jeanetta Burdine of Cedar Bluff, Va.; three brothers-in-law, Bernard Puckett of North Tazewell, Va., Bowen Puckett of Bluefield, Va., and Bill Puckett of Honaker, Va. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, September 3, 2009 at Peery and St.Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell, Va. with the Rev. Leon Yost officiating. Burial will! follow at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, Va. where mi! litary g raveside rites will be conducted by members of the Barns Beavers VFW Post # 7136 of Tazewell, Va.
