I don't have a connection to this family but I have been looking at Confederate Service Records for Bowles in Virginia and this may be the son William who was 19 in 1850. Wm H. Bowles, Pvt., Capt Thomas M. Boyd's Co. (Nelson Grays), 19th Reg't Virginia Infantry, age 22; enlisted May 1, 1861 at Massies Mill; mustered into service May 20, 1871 at Charlottesville, 40 miles to place of muster. This soldier was discharged from General Hospital in Culpeper Courthouse, Va. on Aug. 30, 1861. In Dec. 1861 was was in Moore hospital. In Feb. 1862 he re-enlisted, but all the muster rolls around that time show him as absent sick. He was in Chimborazo Hospital No. 5, Richmond, Va. and was transferred to a hospital in Danville, Va. Aug. 13, 1862, returning to service Aug. 28. He was wounded at Gettysburg and taken prisoner. Records show him in hospitals at Gettysburg and Baltimore. His right femur was broken by a minnie ball, which entered anteriorly at 6 inches above the knee, passing directly through & fracturing the bone. In April 1864 he was sent to City Point for exchange. At that time his bone had united and his deformity was slight. I found all this out trying to determine if he was the William Henry Bowles from Bedford Co. Only one card mentioned Nelson Co. William H. Bowles, Pvt, Co. C, 20 Battn Virginia Heavy Artillery, enlisted Feb. 25, 1862 in Bedford Co., Va. He was detailed by Special Order No. 8 Headquarters, Richmond, Jan. 11, 1863, without pay or allowance from Government. He had a furlough of 30 days approved by the Medical Director's Office, Richmond, Va. on Oct. 27, 1862. On April 9, 1863, Surgeon T A Harris applied for a leave of absence for 10 days for Private Wm. Bowles to visit Staunton, Lexington and Buchanan, Va., to purchase Hospital Supplies. There were lots of other William Bowles, but these were the only two I made notes on.
