Charlie, Try contacting Vivan Toole (see message below). I think she is very familiar with Bowles lines in GA. Brenda Date sent: 12 May 2005 Match: Bowles Source: GAWILKES-L@rootsweb.com From: "Vivian Toole" <vtoole@inu.net> Subject: Berry Cochran (POSSIBLE BOWLES/BOOLES CONNECTION???) Dear List Members, I am posting back to several lists because of the locations involved in this COCHRAN (various spellings) surname and the various possible spellings on this surname. The message below was gatewayed to the Oconee County, Georgia, list from a board on ancestry/rootsweb but I am not sure which board unless it was the Oconee County one. I suspect that there might be a BOWLES/BOOLES connections to this COCHRAN surname in early Greene and Oglethorpe County, Georgia. Picture the given name of Littlebury/Littleberry (various spellings) for Berry Cochran. Littleberry/Littlebury seems to have been a popular given name though I don't recall any information on an origin for it such as some prominent public figure or promient family surname. It was just "popular" or used a lot. There are two marriages for a Samuel Cochran and two marriages for a John Cochran and one for a James M. between 1802-1803 and then 1841 and 1852-53 recorded in Greene County, Georgia. Did not check Oglethorpe or I will neve get this posted if I stop to look up a lot of details. I have not researched the Cochran surname as I am a descendent of John Bowles/Booles d. c. 1825 in Greene County, Georgia, and Elizabeth _?_ d.c. 1834 or so. I have not worked on this family in a long time. Just researched it into the ground with no more information to get him out of Georgia. He may have been for North Carolina??? He lived and owned land in the vicinity of Temperance Bell Crossroads, between Woodville and Bethesda Church. The house of my ancestor, Jackson Bowles bc. 1792 m. Betsy Lindsey 1812, was between the cross roads and the road fork on what is now the paved and named road, Randolph Church Road, going from the cross roads to Daniel Springs on Hwy 44 to Washington in Wilkes County. This whole area was once in Wilkes County. The area around Woodville and Temperance Bell Crossroads was once in Oglethorpe County before 1799. Jackson Bowles and probably Betsey Lindsey Bowles are buried in the old cemetery at Temperance Bell Cross Roads. John and Elizabeth Booles/Bowles had a son, Thomas. Greene County marriage records include a marriage of Thomas Bowles to Acintha Cothrine on April 1, 1819 by William Tuggle and a Littleberry Bowles to Cena Cochrane August 29, 1833 by Nathan Hobbs. Back in the time of genealogy research before the Internet before 1995 one Bowles researcher on the line of this Thomas Bowles proposed that these marriages were a case of a widow Cochrane (various spellings) with a daughter by the same or similar given name had married Thomas Bowles and that children by previous marriages had also married each other. Or some version thereof. Unfortunately, I believe that that researcher is now deceased. As I wrote above, it has been a long time since I have worked on my Bowles family. Just no new information. If I take time to look up all the details, I will never get this posted. There were two other Bowles/Booles men in the same area at the same time that I have not been able to tie together to my John Booles, Sr. William Booles was a Rev. Sol. from North Carolina and his widow received a pension. His descendents mostly moved further west eventually to Louisiana. The other was Jesse Boles/Booles/Bowles who died early with a will in Oglethorpe County. Some of his descendents eventually showed up in Taliaferro County Census after it was formed c. 1827. I have never found anyone researching the line of Jesse Bowles. A SAR line has been established for William Booles, Sr. There were some other assorted Bowles that I have not tied into these lines in early Georgia. Have had a real job sorting out who belonged to which man and finally gave up on matching some of the early John Booles references. Hope this helps someone. Maybe a new lead on my Bowles/Booles however far fetched. One can always hope. I am not currently on the Bowles list though some of my early posting should be in the archives.
