Joseph Adamy, born 1834 in Munster, Westphalia, came to this city in 1854 and married Caroline Hoffman here in 1865. His wife was born in Beardstown, IL, in 1840. Joseph was for man years engaged in the liquor business and for many years ran a liquor wholesale business together with Eduard Levi. The husband died years ago. His wife and children now live in St. Louis. ASHER, Bornmann's none Peoples Hx Anderson 522 Ursa marks the occasion of the first outbreak in Quincy of the dread cholera. Two or three of those intending to go (4th of July BBQ) came down with the disease and died before sundown. Asher Anderson and his wife died of it the same day. Martha Ann Gates (daughter of Martin and Hester Gates) married John Henry Bingle in Adams County May 1852 their daughter Emmanetta Bingle (Glines) was born in Adams County March of 1853. DICKHUT Peoples Hx C.C. 310, (1866-1888), SE corner of 7th & State. In the City Directory of 1866, this store appears for the first time; however, in a biography of him it states that he was in the drug business from 1860. He started his business at 700 State and remained there until 1870 when he moved to 646 State. After 5 years at this location, he moved his establishment to the bldg that the Miller & Terdenge Drug Store had just vacated at 842 Bway, the corner of 9TH & Bwy (purchased by F.W. Hackmann in 1882). He remained here only two or three years and the moved back to "calf town". This time he located his store at 842 State and remained there until he discontinued his business in 1888. After closing his store he became a pharmacist for Philip H. Breer in his shop at 900 S. 8th. L.A. 315, In 1906, it (Heidbreder store) was moved to a new bldg at the NW corner of 5th & Chestnut where it is still located. At this time, L.A. Dickhut who had been employed in the Heidbreder stores, became a partner with Hagemann and the Heidbreder and the name became Heidbreder-Hagemann & Co. Wm 352, Late in 1842, he (Robert S. Benneson-Lumberman) formed a partnership with William Dickhut. This partnership continued for 16 years. The company erected many prominent homes in Quincy, most noteworthy of these was the home of General Singleton, named "Boscobel", located three miles north of Quincy. John 454. Johann Martin Erdmann, born 2 April 1814 in the area of Muhlhausen, Thuringia, and his wife Anna Elisabeth Bangen, born 5 Aug 1805, came to Quincy in 1851 with their two sons, Johan born in 1844 and Martin born in 1846. The father was a building carpenter and joiner and was engaged as such for many years here. The husband died 4 August 1866 and the wife 12 June 1871. Johann Erdmann, the older son of the couple, learned the smith's trade here from Heinrich Glaser, went overland to California in 1864 and remained there until 1866, when he returned and married Marie Bruing. On 15 June 1815, he married Elisabeth Dorothea Gobel, born 21 Mar 1788. They left Germany 1 May 1831, came by way of Baltimore to Chambersburg, PA, where they lived two years, then moved to st. Louis and in 1835 came to Quincy. From here they moved to Mill Creek. Konrad died 19 Mary 1875, his wife had died 30 Octoter 1841. Maria Magdelena, their daughter, born 1 June 1827, is the widow of Michael Loos, who still lives on Mill Creek. Bornmann's 34 Michael Steiner, married in 1839 Katherine Gobel. In 1841 he married Marie Starmann, who died in 1851. On 25 May 1852 he married a second time to Marie Hodinghaus, born 5 June 1834 in the area of Paderhorn and had come to quincy via New Orleans in 1851. On 25 May this year they celebrated a golden anniversary in the same house in Melrose where they were married 50 years ago and have lived ever since. Gerhard Kroner ran a nursery but has long been in a well-deserved retirement. Still living children are Josephine, wife of Franz Wiskirchen; Franz Kroner, milkman; Cecilia, wife of Johann Wiskirchen, all residing in Melrose. 78 Wilhelm Kroner, born 1809 in Herzlake, Hannover, and his wife Margarethe nee Starmann, born 22 Nov 1810 in Herzlake, came to Quincy in 1843 and settled on a farm in Melrose Twp. Powell was the minister at Ursa when this incident occurred. George, John, Wm. 674, George B. Powell, son of George W and Mary Beaty Powell, was an important agriculturist of Ellington Twp, owning one of the most beautiful homes in the rurual district. He married Mary D. Dralle. He owned 220 acres in Ellington and possessed two old parchment deeds that bore the date Oct 7, 1834, and were signed by Pres. Andrew Johnson. Mr. Powell was prominent in state politics, besides serving as trustee of the township. William Powell was born in Kent County, Delaware and came to Ellington in 1830. He married Elizabeth Williams from Kentucky. They enjoyed 940 acres of farm lands abundantly stocked with cattle and fruit orchards, known as Pleasant View Farm. In 1832, John Powell, born in Kent Co, Delaware, settled on a 320 acre plot of government grant land. John married Mary Lewis, also of Kent County. The Powells had fifteen children. He was occupied in general farming and raised cattle on a large scale in the twp.
