===================================================================== Match: Bowls Source: MDSTMARY-L@rootsweb.com From: "Judith Burger" <bburger1-2@comcast.net> Subject: John Dant m Elizabeth Hopewell Good Morning Linda & List ! I'm trying to solve a mystery of the John Dant who m Elizabeth Hopewell as listed below. My ultimate goal is to prove or disprove that John Baptist Dant d 1808 Washington County, KY married Elizabeth Hopewell Mattingly. Also to prove or disprove that there was a Elizabeth HOPEWELL Mattingly. Confusing the issue even more is the fact that John Baptist Dant inherited "Hopewell" from his father John Dant d 1763 SMC. Thanks for any insight you may offer. Judith MARYLAND RECORDS, Colonial Revolutionary County Church, Vol I, Gaius Marcus Brumbaugh, Reprint 1993, Genealogical Publishing Co., Baltimore, MD p. 333 1796 Nov 18 Dant, John and Elizabeth Hopewell. (SMCM) ====================================================== In the past I have assumed that this John Dant was the John Baptist Dant who m/1 Ann the widow of Matthew Elliott and went to Kentucky as a member of the Maryland League c 1785, not noticing that the dates make this improbable as he would not likely have gone back to Maryland to marry again in 1796. Leading to this error was the listing in many genealogies that John Baptist Dant d. 1808 Washington County, Kentucky m/2. Elizabeth Hopewell Mattingly d/o John Mattingly of John of Cezar, the widow of Thomas Shercliffe, Jr. d 1787. I have not found to date any primary source for the marriage of Thomas Shercliffe, Jr to an Elizabeth Hopewell Mattingly or any primary source for the marriage of the widow, Elizabeth Hopewell Mattingly Shercliffe to John Baptist Dant. They may exist, I just haven't found them ========================= Herman E. Mattingly has the distribution acct of John Mattingly naming his daughter Elizabeth, though I have not found it on #206 to date. THE MATTINGLY FAMILY IN EARLY AMERICA, Herman E. Mattingly, 1975, Self Published, Columbus, Ohio. (deceased, Ordered from Patrick Smeltzer, 33 2nd St. #100, Frazeburg, OH 43822-9610), p. 73 "This John Mattingly whose will was proven April 3, 1759, left his widow, Elizabeth, and nine children, all named in the final accounts and distribution book (13). The children were the above named John Baptist who was 18 years of age (b. Nov. 1741), James (b. 1743), John (b. Nov. 25 1745), Jane (b. July 7 1746), William (b. Oct. 1747), Henry (b. July 3, 1751), Margaret (b. August 1753), Elizabeth (b. Oct 19 1755), and Bennett (b. Sept. 7, 1757) (14)" ========================== There are two probates of the will of Thomas Shercliffe who d. 1787 which name the wife Elizabeth.
