Leathel, According to a deposition, dated July 2lst, 1738. and recorded in Norfolk Co., George Newton, second of the name, was born in or about the year 1678. .This deposition shows that he went to school in the town of Lancaster, England. It is as follows : "The Deposition of George Newton, aged sixty years or thereabouts, being examined & Sworn, Saith : That in the year 1692 And in the year of Our Lord God 1693. This deponent was at school in the Kingdom of England in the Town of Lancaster & Lancashire, And lived with Mr. Thomas Westmore in the said Town & this Deponerit knew Jonas Cawson, who then went to the free School belonging unto the Town of Lancaster, by the Church Yard, And this Deponent was well acquainted with two of the said Jonas Cawson's Brothers that went to a private schoole with this Deponent in Lancaster town, One of his Brothers name was Jonathan Cawson, the other name I have forgot being long since as appears by this Deposition. And this De- ponent further saith that he hath several times seen Mr Cawson, whom both Jonathan Cawson & Jonas Cawson called Father, but dont remember his Christian name, but always understood when I was in the Town of Lancaster, that the then old Mr Cawson was Jonathan Cawson & Jonas Cawson Father & lived some small Distance in the Country from the town of Lancaster. And that after this Deponent returned from England to his Native place in Virginia & lived sometime there this Jonas Cawson came to Virginia & happening in Company with him after some Communication with him this Deponent remembered that it [sic] said Jonas Cawson that this Deponent was well acquainted with at and when he was at School in the Town of Lancaster in England, And also talked many times with the said Jonas Cawson about his Father & Brother, and that some few years after his coming to Virginia he the said Jonas Cawson intermarried with one Abigail Church by whom he had Christopher Cawson his eldest son : And further saith not."
