    1. Re: Bowles from Montgomery County VA
    2. Hi Charley, I have been sitting quietly over here for some time now watching the posts carefully and waiting for more info on the Bowles family from Montgomery Co., VA. On the info I sent in for the DNA project, I only tracked the family back to David J. BOWLES, because the next step back was Peter BOWLES and there just wasn't enough info at the time for me to verify exactly what was going on with this family. This is what I have come up with so far: Peter (middle initial unknown) BOWLES b.1800, VA. d. 1867 Montgomery Co., VA married first Nancy HALE, b. 1798, VA. d., abt. 1846, Montgomery Co., VA Their children: William Thomas BOWLES/BOLES, b. Sept.28, 1828 in Montgomery Co., VA. d. Jan 4, 1900 Douglas, Kansas. Married Mary Elizabeth BURKETT, 1866. Mary Agnes BOWLES, b. 1830, Montgomery Co., VA, married Elija SHAVER Julina BOWLES, b. 1832, Montgomery Co., VA Catherine V. BOWLES, b. 1835, Montgomery Co., VA Now here is the problem area: I have concluded that Nancy HALE died abt. 1846 and Peter married Susan. There is a possibility that her last name is HYLTON, but I cannot verify this yet. 1870 Fed. Census records have her as Susanna. This Susan was born in 1826. I do not think that she is Peter's daughter because it appears that she is the mother of the children in the family starting in 1848. Peter and Susan's children: Eliza J. BOWLES, 1848, VA Nancy A. BOWLES, 1850, VA Virginia BOWLES, 1851, VA Peter BOWLES, 1854, VA Margaretta BOWLES, 1856, VA David J. BOWLES, August 1860, VA George H. BOWLES, 1862, VA Nancy H. BOWLES, 1863, VA Charles E. BOWLES, 1867, VA Peter died in 1867, after this child was born, perhaps related to the Civil War, although I find no record of him having served. From the 1860 Federal Census for Montgomery Co., VA Peter BOWLES, age 58, est. birth year 1800, VA Susan BOWLES, " 30, " 1829, VA Eliza J. BOWLES, " 11, " 1848, VA Nancy E.(or A.) BOWLES, " 9. " 1850, VA Virginia BOWLES, " 7 " 1852, VA Peter BOWLES, " 5, " 1854, VA Margaretta BOWLES " 3, " 1856, VA David J. BOWLES " 1/12 " August 1860, VA On the 1870 Federal Census for Montgomery Co., VA, Peter, the son, last name spelled BOWELS (I always loved that spelling when it was MY last name), born 1854/55 is working as a farm laborer in the household of Samuel Supler. On this census Peter is said to be 17 instead of 15, but I am certain it is the same Peter. Also, Peter's sister Margaretta (Margaret BOLES), b. 1856, is doing housework for David SLUPER in 1870 in Montgomery Co., VA. On the 1880 Census for Montgomery Co., VA, William T. BOWLES, son of Peter and Nancy, is listed as W. T. BOLES, age 5, with wife Mary E., age 34, and their children, John D., age 11, Delia H., age 9, Hibbert N., age 5, and Lula W., age 1 month. Also, on the 1880 Fed. Census for Montgomery Co., VA, Susan BOWLS, born 1826, wife of Peter, born 1800, is living with Andrew (?) Furrow as stepmother. I don't understand yet who how she is stepmother to Andrew. I know there is a connection between this BOWLES family and the FURROW family that goes back several generations. John Wesley BOLES, my son's grandfather's second wife was Delia Ethel FURROW, b. 1896. On the 1870 Fed. Census for Montgomery Co., VA, Susanna BOWLES is evidently widowed and still has her children David J., age 10, George H., age 8, and Charles E., age 3 still at home. Two houses down is the FURROW family headed by Abraham, age 69, and next door on the other side is the family of James FURROW, age 29. Susan's daughter Nancy BOWLES is living with the family doing housework. I really do not think that the father of this Peter BOWLES born 1800, VA is Thomas BOWLES married to Jemima Day. The DNA does not show a relationship to the Hanover BOWLES family, but rather leans more towards England and perhaps North Carolina. I wonder if they came from Pennsylvania through Maryland to Virginia. Does anyone have more info on this line? Susan Walters

    2. Susan, I can only guess that the Peter Bowles wanting a divorce from Sally is Peter son of Thomas Bowles. And I can only guess that your Peter Bowles born 1800 is a son of Peter Bowles son of Thomas Bowles? Peter had a brother named David. Jemima don't seem to be Thomas Bowles first wife? Thomas seems to be from the Stoney Run group? I will show you how next.
