    1. William Bowles and Margaret Neigin/Nugent of VA/OH/IL/WI
    2. Rebecca MacAllester
    3. Hi all! William and Margaret (Neigin/Nugent) Bowles are my 3rd greatparents. From them I descend from their son, John Andrew Bowles who married Jane Cordelia (Jennie) Farrand, and then their son William Andrew who married Irma May Peck. My problem is that I can't find anything else on William and Margaret's family or parents beyond a couple clues and hints. The family from them i have pretty pat. I'd be glad for any other tidbit, snippet of info from any of my possible Bowles cousins out there. What i have thus far is below. Please pardon any errors in spelling, grammar, etc.- it's pretty much stream of conscience from my FTM notes. Thanks so very very much for anything anybody's got on my Bowles family. - Becky MacAllester ======================================================================================= 1. WILLIAM E1 BOWLES was born 06 Oct 1816 in VA and died 19 Jan 1884 in WI. He married MARGARET E NUGENT 15 Jun 1843 in St Clair Co, IL. She was born 25 Jan 1822 in Cincinnati, OH, and died 24 Feb 1898 in Platteville, Grant, WI. Notes for WILLIAM E BOWLES: He was a lead miner and owned his home in Potosi. * My William Bowles had his first child, Thomas (Robert), in IL. There are a bunch of Bowles' who emmigrated IL near the Missouri border (near St Louis), but not sure how (or if) William Sr fits in with this. They must not have stayed there long, however, since William E the younger was born in WI 2 years later. * I cant find anything else Neigin on the Internet, except a Robert Neigin in the 1860 census in Fremont, Newaygo, MI, p 951 and a Patrick Neigin who bought land in Kenosha, WI Mar 1, 1848. Nugent seems fairly common. * There is a William Boyles who bought land in grant co in 1841 --could be him wiht name mispelled BOYLES WILLIAM 26 2 N 1 W 80 10 4079 1841/01/05 CHARLES BRACKEN ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- *Info from Kathy Wolfe Grant County Lookup volunter: "From Arlene Hamilton's "Potosi Project" the following information was gathered by her: William E. Bowles, was born 6 Oct 1816 VA (father born England and mother born Scotland). He died 19 Jan 1884 at age 67 years 3 mo and 13 days. He was married to Margaret Nugent who was born 25 Jan 1822 at Cincinnati, OH and died 24 Feb 1898 at Platteville. Her death record said she was buried at Van Buren Cemetery, Potosi, WI, but there doesn't appear to be a stone there. In the 1850 census he was a miner and in 1855 census he lived in Potosi. The Grant County Herald paper of Jan 24, 1884, stated he came to Potosi mines early. The 1870 census gives his real estate at $200, with no personal ppty. In 1898 Margaret came to St. Louis while yet tender in years. Came to Potosi with her husband 50 years ago (1848), maybe 1846. The 1880 census listed him as a laborer, but was disabled, she was also disabled and they lived in Potosi Village......... "Arlene and I worked on a project where we copied columns that appeared in the Grant County Herald newspaper written by an early Justice of the Peace, Edward Wilmot. His column was entitled "With the Potosi Pioneers" and we felt they were so good, we copied all of them and I put an index with it and we sell these booklets as a fundraiser for our local Passage Thru Time Museum which is located in Potosi. I checked that index and found a paragraph contained William Bowles name on page 100 of that booklet. In this article he is describing where various people lived and mentions that William Bowles had built a frame dwelling which had been removed long ago. (This article was printed Jan 17, 1923). He goes on to state that a small frame dwelling now stands on the lot and is owned and occupied by Louis Gable and family. I expect that there are people in Potosi who could tell you just where this house was located. Mrs Francis (Bernice) Reding is in poor health now, but her au! nt was Mrs. Louis Gable and you might want to contact her. Her address is 183 N Main Street, Potosi, WI 53820. Her phone number is (608) 763-2243. If you are interested in the local history you might want to purchase this booklet. It sells for $30.00 plus the postage and handling of $3.50. If you are a member of the Grant County Genealogical Society you could also borrow it from their library with it just costing you the postage it takes to send the booklet to you. In checking the indexes I have for the Grant County Herald newspaper which was published at Lancaster, WI covering the years 1843 thru 1879) I only found two entries: Bowles, Amia married Thomas Nichols on 27 Jan 1870 at Hazel Green tp in Feb 15, 1870 paper on page 3 column 5. Bowles, Mary F married Chas. H. O'Hare on 19 Jan 1873 at Potosi tp in Feb 18, 1873 paper page 3 column 2. These papers are on microfilm at the Wisconsin Room, Karrmann Library, University of Wisconsin-Platteville. In checking the Fennimore Times indexes which I have (covering 1889 -1909) I find: Bowles, Thomas of Boscobel, died Dec 1893, an old resident in Dec 14, 1893 paper page 8 column 1. The birth records in Grant county start in the 1870s and those are rather sparse. The death records also start about that time. I imagine that Arlene checked our Grant County Genealogical Society Cemetery Card file which is a record of inscriptions on stones that the group copied years ago. There was a lot of lead mining done in this area and don't know if there would be any work records. Possibly the Wisconsin Room could be of some help. There were mines located right in Potosi itself. In fact the St. John Mine was an early mine that operated from the 1830s until after the Civil War. Sincerely, Kathy Wolfe" --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Margaret who married Charles O'Hara is daughter of William and Margaret, but don't know who Amia is yet. Need to order the booklet and do some digging in Grant County some time. * Notes for MARGARET E NUGENT: WI Death Index: Name: Margaret E Bowler Death Date: 24 Feb 1898 County: Grant Volume: 02 Page: 0377 Reel: 031 Image: 1202 Index Volume: - Sequence #: 037053 Got her death record, but her parents' names are not on it - gggggrrrrrr. Can't find William's death record under any variation I tried - Boyles, Boles, bowles, Bowes, Boyle, Bowl, Bowls, etc, etc. Sigh. *got a hint from St Clair county (I need to find this paper again...its somewhere in this mess) that Margaret was under a guardianship when she married William? Her parents must have died when she was young. Need more on these folks....did they die in OH or IL? *I found an Andrew Nugent in the 1830 Census for Whitewater, Hamilton, OH (Hamilton is a Cincinnati county) who has a daughter between 5 and 10 -- could be him??? It would explain the continuation of Andrew in the boys' names -- John Andrew and William Andrew. *According to census, Margaret's father was French and mother Scottish. Mom remembers being told here is French in the family from this side, but nothing else. Name is Neigin for marriage in St Clair county (Belleville), IL, but Nugent on death record. Neigin sounds French...anglicized to Nugent??? More About WILLIAM BOWLES and MARGARET NUGENT: Marriage: 15 Jun 1843, St Clair Co, IL Children of WILLIAM BOWLES and MARGARET NUGENT are: i.
