Sarah owned slaves and she went to church at Dripping Springs. So did Lowry Bishop and others. Lu -------- Original Message -------- ==> From: "Leathel Bowles" <LEATHEL@worldnet.att.net> ==> Date: Mon, 7 Mar 2005 21:32:59 -0500 I forgot to mention Sarah Bowles a daughter of Thomas Phillip and Sarah was also a member of Dripping Springs Church. I see in Linnes post that Sibella Logdon was a member of Mt. Pisgah Church. Jesse Bowles married Sibella Logdon.I have not found where William, Jesse, or Benjamin went to church. The reason William did not go to church at Dripping Springs was because he owned slaves. The slave issue was the reason for Mt.Pisgah Church being built. Benjamin lived about a mile from Dripping Springs and did not attend. John and his mother lived about 7 miles from Dripping Springs, they probably spent the night before church at Benjamins.Mt. Pisgah was built a few hundred yards across Beaver Cr. and up the hill from where John lived. Leathel,
Lue, you are correct they had slaves. That was the issue either give up your slaves or be dismissed from the church. In 1799 there was a William Bow and a Edward Gill listed in Barren Co. Not sure when the Branches came to Barren Co, but Valencia owned two houses in Glasgow that she sold before moving out of Barren Co. I can read between the lines here too. What I see makes sense, no proof. Linne do you see it to? Leathel, Virlynch Branch m. Charles Gill, April 24, 1788. Henrico Co, VA Valencia Branch m. William Bowles, May 24, 1802.
