===================================================================== Match: Bole Source: GEN-MAT-HX-L@rootsweb.com From: "Helen" <Helenh@pdq.net> Subject: Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania - See Names History of the County of Westmoreland, Pennsylvania, with Biographical Sketches of Many of Its Pioneers and Prominent Men, ed. George Dallas Albert, 1882, 1998. Blue cloth covered hardback with gilt printing, 9 x 11-1/4, 808 pages, maps, portraits, illustrations, everyname index, new book condition, a truly nice reproduction. This book has been called "the Bible" or "the book" for Westmoreland County Research. It contains detailed data on the early settlement and wars - Fort Necessity, Dusquesne, Pitt, Ligonier, the Battle of Bushy Run, etc. during the French and Indian War, Whiskey Rebellion, Revolutionary War, Civil War and others - and tells of the towns, schools, churches, canals, railroads, roads, farms, coal mining and much more, not the least of which are thousands of biographical sketches of famous and not so famous citizens of Westmoreland County and nearby areas of southwestern Pennsylvania.. Westmoreland had been created from Bedford in 1773, and from Westmoreland were created the counties of Washington, Indiana, Fayette, Allegheny with other counties created from those. So one can see that old Westmoreland covered a large area and this excellent history and biographical account may give information on earlier ancestors of those to be found in the above counties. Now I cannot begin to to give all the chapter subheadings, as listed in the Table of Contents, but the contents pretty much cover: Introductory - Early Provincial History The French Occupance of Fort Duquesne Braddock's Expedition Armstrong's Expedition, 1756 - Bouquet at Ligionier, 1758 Forbes' Expedition, 1758 First Settlements in Westmoreland - Battle of Bushy Run, 1763 Settlement from 1759 to 1769 Predominant Nationalities of the Settlers Customs, Morals, and Manners Prior to the Erection of the County Westmoreland County Organized - Courts Established, etc. First Jail - Early Punishments - Slavery in 1781 Old Hannastown, The County Seat The Border Troubles of 1774 Begin Connolly's Usurpations, Indian Alarms, Etc.
