    1. Simon & Elizabeth Bowles
    2. Hi Leathel, Why do you believe that Simon Bowles was the husband of Elizabeth, mother of John Bowles and Rebecca Bowles? My answer, she was mother of Rebecca Bowles, John Bowles was Rebecca Bowles uncle. The facts that Elizabeth Young in her will 1695 claims Bowles Tyler as her grandson. This means that Elizabeth Young was a mother to Rebecca Bowles or James Tyler? William Bowles, son of Edward, in his will 1662 lists Uncle John Bowles and kinsman James Tyre. It took me awhile to figure out which John Bowles he was calling uncle, (John died 1664 or John died 1675). When I found that it was 1673 when John Bowles was granted (Bowles Purchase), I knew which one was uncle. Now Uncle John gave to his nephew (James Tyler,Tyre)(Bowles Purchase). If that was true then John, Edward, and Rebecca Bowles were brothers and sister, and their mother Elizabeth died after 1695. The word nephew meant different things back then and since James Tyre was married to Johns niece, (Simon and Elizabeth Bowles daughter)he called (James Tyre d.1686 who married Rebecca) nephew. Confussed yet? Leathel, This is what I was trying to remember last night. As you can see Elizabeth was Rebecca's mother and John's brother (Simon) was her father, which would make James Tyre that married Rebecca, John's nephew-in-law. "Cousin" was used to designate grandson, nephew,or nephew-in-law; but "nephew" never described a cousin, but nephew or nephew-in-law only. Nephew never meant grandson in Virginia records and certainly "grandson" was never used to designate "nephew" or any other relationship except grandson or great-grandson.
