    3. This one's extremely important to many of us, including me! Whoever has these people in Sandi Gorin's post: step up and tell us about your ancestors and how they connect to the Bowles families. FOX and BOWLES families were connected in Virginia. We also have had a Fox connected to the BOWLES and GILLETT families. The following paragraph is from Heather Gillett (eponalady@yahoo.com): At 9:07 PM -0700 9/28/04, Heather wrote: >The second Bowles line is the one I referenced in my email to >the Adair County, Iowa mailing list. David Bowles (born 1701) was the >son of David Bowles (died 1711) and Katherine Dickinson >(1679-1722). The other Bowles line that Heather has is solidly connected to my own. Henry SMITH married the three GILLETT sisters in succession; Henry SMITH was the uncle of Elizabeth JEFFRIES who married Benjamin BOWLES. This troop migrated to Texas together. When they got to Brazoria Co., Roswell GILLETT married Benjamin BOWLES' daughter, Martha Smith BOWLES. At Daniel Jeffries' estate sale in Barren Co. in 1808, the following men were listed: BARTON, Jacob BELL, William DALE, Reuben HALL, Absolem HALL, Mahlen HAMILTON, Abner NEVILL, Joseph NEVILL, William SMITH, Benjamin WARDER, Joseph WARDER, Walter I'd like to know how these men, above, are related to the men mentioned below. Where did their ancestors live? And did the men mentioned above stay in Barren County? About the Martins: their history is told in the book, "A Martin Genealogy Tied to the History of Germanna, Virginia," by William A. Martin. In it we find the ancestors and families of Malinda HOLTSCLAW, who married John F. "Jackey" Bowles. This same book lists on page 100, lists the intermarriages of several of the families in Sandi's posting: "...John MARTIN, b. prob. ca. 1755-57; m. 24 Mar. 1778 in Fauquier County, Virginia to Sarah JEFFRIES;...Sarah was the daughter of Joseph JEFFRIES whose will, dated 24 Sept. 1807, and probated on 28 Dec. 1807 in Fauquier County (Fauquier County Will Book 2, page 281) mentions his wife, Margaret, and children: William Henry Enoch Joseph George Daniel [my gggggrandfather who m. Patsy SMITH] Thomas Mary m. KEMPER Sarah m. MARTIN Lydia m. SMITH Lucy m. GIBSON Peggy m. MADUX [or Maddox] Agatha m. SANDERS So you can see very clearly how these families intermarried and portions of them went to Barren Co. Daniel JEFFRIES maternal grandparents were Henry SMITH and Sarah CROSBY of Stafford Co., VA. I think that Charlie Royal (cnroyall@wcc.net) of our list has a CROSBY, GEE, SANDERS and a TONEY in his larger tree. Charlie, can you tell us more about these families? They headed south through Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas. Freda Noble (tnoble@mcn.org) of our list has a WILBURN and a POOL. There's a very large book entitled, "The Maxey's of Virgina," by Edythe Maxey Clark. On page 513, Philip MAXEY is given the number 754 (1777-1820). "Philip Maxey, born 17 December 1777 in the newly-formed county of Powhatan, Virginia, was a son of the Rev. Edward Maxey and Mary Bondurant. He was only four years old when his father died and he was reared by his mother on their plantation in Powhatan until Mary remarried in 1794 to widower Nathan Ayers of Buckingham County, Virginia. Philip's name appears in District A of the 1797 personal property tax books of Buckingham County, and from 1796 through 1799 his name was found on the land tax records of Powhatan County with the 175 acres left to him by his uncle Nathaniel. Four days after his 21st birthday, Philip sold his land on the waters of Jones Creek---adjoining the properties of Ephraim Maxey, John Smith, Bennett Maxey, David Flournoy and Peter Dupuy---to his older brother Ephraim. Philip was in the tax records of Jessamine County, Kentucky, in the year 1799 and remained on their lists through 1805, with the exception of 1801. That was the year he returned to Buckingham County to marry his stepsister Elizabeth Hales Ayers (born 26 February 1784, Buckingham County, Virginia), the daughter of Nathan and Mary (Leake) Ayers, on 20 October 1801. Philip and his bride settled in Barren County, Kentucky, in 1806---in Bear Wallow, 12 miles north of Glascow, [sic] located on the present border of Hart and Barren River. He had patented 165 acres jointly with Ephraim by survey dated 14 April 1807, and this land was divided on 17 February 1817 when Ephraim sold to Philip 135 acres on the west side of Elk Lick for $20 and Philip sold 30 acres to Ephraim for the same sum. Philip also had patent land on Pawpaw Grove surveyed 13 December 1815 amounting to 150 acres." Benjamin BOWLES' daughter, Sarah, married Elijah MAXEY in Brazoria Co., TX in 1833. When she died, he took their two children back to Memphis, TN, to be reared by his sisters. Benjamin's granddaughter married into the DELL family of Florida. In that tree are several MAXEYs, including a Bennett Maxey DELL. Can anyone else add to what I've written here? Or to what Sandi posted, below?
