    3. This is Obadiah W. Bowles, son of John and Celia (White) Bowles of Barren/Metcalfe Counties. He married Amanda Twitchell, widow of Asa Twitchell, on 22 Sep 1893 in Pleasant Valley, El Dorado County, CA. Obediah was in Barren County on 15 Aug 1848 when he witnessed his sister Elizabeth’s wedding to Thomas Stockley. Since he was not in the 1850 Barren Co census, he apparently left for California sometime after the wedding date. Perhaps he went for the gold rush? As far as we know, he had no children. Author: ladisatt Surnames: Classification: obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.california.counties.eldorado/767/mb.ashx Message Board Post: The Mountain Democrat March 28, 1896 Suicide of Miss Amelia Plucker Last Sunday evening, Miss Amelia, youngest daughter of H.B. Plucker, committed suicide by shooting herself. Of the pre-arranged particulars it is enough to say, that after the most deliberate preparation she retired to her room in the Central House, locked the door, and leaning against pillows arranged for the purpose, shot herself through the heart. Alarmed by the report of the pistol her father and others hastened to the door of the room and receiving no reply to calls for admission, burst it open just in time to hear her whisper "too late." In a letter to James Trail, not intended for publication, the cause of her fatal act is told as follows: March 23, 1896,- Central House Dearest Jim:- When you receive this note you will be shocked and surprised and I shall be dead, for the moment this not leaves my hand I will kill myself and the reason for this crazy act is, you care more for fast women, cards and saloons than you do for me. Darling Jim do you remember how often I have said that nothing but death should ever part us and that I would sooner have you kill me than leave me? Oh I am a woman of my word and I shall take my own life, but no one in this world shall ever know that I killed myself for you . I wrote Frank a few lines begging him to be kind to dear old papa, but I did not even hint the reason for killing myself. Darling boy, will you please grant my last wish? Please go to my funeral and be one of my pall bearers and for your dead girl's sake do not let this letter get into the newspapers or in anyone's hands but yours. Please never lead on another girl that you are ashamed to be seen with and do not tell her that you love her when you only care for her for your play-toy. Always bear in mind that you are the cause of one girl's death. Don't be the cause of another. I will now close with God bless you from my heart. I love you with a pure woman's love and cannot live without you. >From your broken hearted, Emma As appears from its date, the following letter to her brother Frank, was written Saturday, and placed on her bureau, where it was found as she intended. Central House - March 22, 1896 Dear Brother: "When you read this note I will be dead and I have one request which I hope you will grant and that is to be kind and good to my poor old father. "Sister Molly is married and brother Adolph is away, therefore your are his only comfort. Remember father has always treated us well: in fact, is the only person that ever loved me. When mother left, he stayed with his children and gave them a good home. "The reason for doing this foolish act will never be known, therefore do not trouble yourself trying to find out. "Now asking you to grant my last wishes I will tell you how I would like to be buried. Please bury me in Union Cemetery. Have Mrs. Copland make my dress and I would very much like to have these gentlemen for my pall bearers: W.H. Hughes, Walter Frey, Nick Fox, James Trail, Dr. Shepherd, Geo. Schill, Jas. McKiernan. "Brother do not think that I am crazy to kill myself without taking a second thought for I am as cool and in my right mind now as I ever have been and I have thought over this for a long time. "I shall bring this to a close now by saying God bless my parents, friends and also these people that were always ready to run me down and talk about me without any reason and remember your broken-hearted sister. Emma" "P.S. Please always by good to your dear old father and please forgive me for telling that story and saying that I was sick but I would not leave papa without some one in my place". "From Emma." When the foregoing letters had been tearfully verified by the firm little hand that wrote them, they explained numerous intimations and arrangements leading up to the consummation of a settled purpose. The made the task of the jury summoned by Coroner Winchell, and attended by the District Attorney, short, sad and almost superfluous. The jury was composed of Geo. Ranney, E.L. Alderson, Robt. Calvin, Jas. Patten, W. Clifton, John Reese, Jas. Higgins, Fred Rohlfing, W. J. Estebrook, M.E. Boles, and Charles Green. They were all friends of the bereaved family, and their inquest and verdict were only what they had to be. Distinguished men and women under the dark shadow of contemplated suicide, have left last messages of love or hatred for kinsmen, friends or foes. But by which one of them was so sad a story, as that of Emma Plucker, ever better told. Not a redundant sentence. All blameless or forgiven and only her own young life to answer for its unhappiness. "Father," "brother," "sister," "Words, like Egyptian symbols, set apart, For the mysterious Priesthood of the heart." "Dear old father" thrice repeated, to emphasize the love of a Motherless daughter for "him who had loved her." Her funeral from the Central House to Union Cemetery last Tuesday, was a spontaneous tribute of considerate tenderness, for one who had been more sinned against than sinning. The entire service conducted by Rev. C.C. Peirce, including the sermon, was appropriate to the occasionl Mrs. Rantz, Miss Ayers, and Mesers Merrill and Fox, sang well chosen hymns with charming melodies, at the house and grave. "Come thou Disconsolate," sounded like a Divine invitation to the broken-hearted child of despair, sleeping so peacefully there covered by loving hands and budding Spring, with floral emblems of the rest she had sought and found. And when the lamenting song and service died away in Union Cemetery, they gave to Silence a voice, -- "Which says in Love, which would rejoice, --"Await"! And says to Wrong, that would redeem, -- " Too late"! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. After a protracted illness, O.W. Boles died last Sunday, at the Cary House. He had come to this city for medical treatment by Dr. Mountain, and had been constantly attended and watched over by his wife and Mrs. W.W. Hoyt. But all efforts to save were unavailing. He was a native of Kentucky aged 66 years, 4 mo. and 6 days. For many years Pleasant Valley had been to him what its name implies. Here he was married to Mrs. E. Twitchell, who made him a happy home and survives to mourn his loss. As agent of the Park Canal Company, he had business relations with all the people of his district, and will be greatly missed, as he was respected by all of them. Mrs. G.K. Smith, his step-daughter, came from Biggs to attend his funeral, which was largely attended and was conducted by Rev. C.C. Peirce in accordance with the ritual of the Episcopal Church. Among the friends who had gone before him he sleeps in Union! Cemetery. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Off. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ I posted the material below in 2003, but I believe it fits with the above. I have done a lot of research lately in Caswell County, NC, Louisa and Albemarle counties, VA. I cannot find any definitive documentation of the relationship of Hezekiah who sold land in 1763 to John Mitchie in Albemarle, however he does seem to have ties to Louisa County. In 1762 Hezekiah was a vestryman in Trinity Parish which was in Louisa County. A suit was brought against Hezekiah and James Michie in 1762 by John Russell in Louisa County. The majority of the records of Hanover County were destroyed in the Civil War with the exception of a few extant records for 1730s. The records of Louisa County, formed from Hanover in 1742, contain a vast amount of information relative to Hanover County. The Thomas Rice who patented land in 1719 in the portion of New Kent which later became Hanover and at least some land in the portion of Hanover which became Louisa County died in 1744 according to according to the following indenture found in the records of Louisa County: 28 Jan. 1745: William Rice of Louisa Co. and Thomas Rice of Hanover Co., St. Martin's Par., Exors. of Thomas Rice dec'd. of St. Martin's Par., Hanover Co. to Samuel Winston of Fredericksville Par., Louisa. Thomas Rice, late of Hanover Co., by his Last Will and Testament bearing date 4 Apr. 1744, directed that land joining to Thomas Rice's land in Fredericksville Par., be sold to discharge his just debts. For L40 currt. money. 400 acres...Samuel Winston's line..up Brooke's line north to Capt. Charles Barret's corner...Anderson's line. William Rice Thos. Rice Wit: A. J. Smith, Thomas Jackson, Jeremiah. 28 Jan. 1745 acknowledged by William Rice and Thomas Rice. It appears this was the same Thomas Rice with wife Jane who conveyed 300 acres on the Cubb Creek (present day Louisa County) to Thomas Jackson in an indenture dated June 5, 1735 found in the records of Hanover County. Louisa records reveal Thomas Rice and his, Jane, sold land in Fredericksville Parish on the Cubb Creek to Ann Mills of St. Martin's Parish, Hanover County April 25, 1749. It appears from the above info, the Thomas who was in Caswell,NC may have been the one described in the 1745 Louisa record as the executor of the estate of the earlier Thomas who is believed to have been a son of Thomas Rice and his wife, Marce. The William Rice found in the records of Louisa County was most likely the son of Thomas of Hanover County who died in 1744 as indicated by the 1745 Louisa record. 1)Thomas Rice and Marce of Hanover County, VA 2)William Rice d. 1737 Hanover will names wife Elizabeth and sons: 3)David Rice 3)Micajah Rice 3)Shadrach 3)William Rice 2)Thomas Rice of Hanover d. 1745 3)Thomas and Jane of Louisa County, VA (Later Sheriff in Caswell, NC) 4)Nicholas Rice. 3. ===================================================================== Match: Bowles Source: MDSTMARY@rootsweb.com From: "Linda Reno" <lindareno@comcast.net> Subject: Re: [MDSTMARY] Clement Greenwell-thanks Linda Reno Hi Dottie, All I know at this point is that the wife of John Basil Greenwell was named Eleanor. She wasn't Eleanor Gough. As I recall, there was much discussion on the list, but what I saved are two notes to Mike Gough. My note to Mike Gough, 9/5/2004: Why do you think that Eleanor Gough is the same Eleanor who married John Clarke, John Basil Greenwell, and James Wheatley? Both the wills of James Gough and Priscilla Heard call their daughter Eleanor Greenwell. Eleanor ____who married three times was married to James Wheatley sometime in 1762 or before. Their son, William Wheatley was baptized at St. Andrew's on January 8, 1763. This is before both of the Gough wills above. It just doesn't add up. Eleanor (nee Gough) was still being called Elizabeth Greenwell in her mother's administration accounts in 1770: Admin. accts. of Priscilla Gough 8/15/1770; sureties were Bennet Raley and John Fenwick; legatee was Eleanor Greenwell (dau.); residue to: Elizabeth Jenkins, Mary Rhodes, James Gough, Ignatius Gough, and Susanna Dante; Exec., Mr. James Gough (Skinner). My additional note to Mike Gough, 9/6/2004: In looking again at Priscilla Gough's administration accounts, I noticed this. 8/15/1770: Admin. accts. of Priscilla Gough, SMC. Received from: Stephen Gough due from estate of James Gough. Payments to: James Pike, Zachariah Forrest, Owen Allen. Legatees: Stephen Gough, Ignatius Gough, William Jenkins, James Greenwell, accountant. Exec.: James Gough. (Admin. accts. of the Prerogative Court of Maryland, Libers, 59-66, 1768-1771 by V. L. Skinner, Jr.). NOTE: This record is not on CD #206. This last account has just killed two birds (or more) with one stone. Elizabeth Gough, daughter of James and Priscilla, was married to WILLIAM Jenkins, not John Jenkins (per Donnelly). Eleanor Gough, daughter of James and Priscilla, married JAMES Greenwell. As was the norm, the sons-in-law have been paid their wives' share of Priscilla's estate. So, you're right, Eleanor Gough married James Greenwell. I have no parents for this James Greenwell. Below is what I have for John Basil Greenwell, son of John Greenwell and Catherine Wiseman. Linda Reno Descendants of John Basil Greenwell Generation No. 1 1. 1. [BOWLES] Freddie Bowles in New Zealand
    2. Linne Gravestock
    3. ===================================================================== Match: Bowles Source: NEW-ZEALAND@rootsweb.com From: Adele Pentony-Graham <porcupine07@gmail.com> Subject: [nz] BOWLES I was given a photograph of a Freddie Bowles of Carterton.. has on reverse, Freddie Bowles. Waihekeke (just out of Carterton) Wondered if this is J. F. Bowles buried at Clareville 1918? Or can someone please come up with another Bowles... I have spoken to a Bowles descendant in Carterton, but he says he has no photographs of this family, and scanning it tomorrow for someone up in Kimbolton who has Bowles in the family.. if anyone would like it scanned, just let me know thank you. Freddie is standing next to a cycle.. now the handlebars are not what we see today, so this may help in identifiying the actual year of photograph! Handle bars are like a flatish W! He is wearing a suit with a waistcoat and flat cap. Taken outside, so no photographers props! -- Adele Pentony-Graham Carterton Cemetery Clareville Researcher Carterton Researcher. and Featherston.
