He had a son Willima Thacker born about 1690 and died in Hanover Co., Va between 1767 and 1768. William had a son named Benjamin born between 1720-1730 in Albemarle Co, Va and died there 4/19/1798. This Benjamin was married to Ruth Bowles, Aggy Agnes Baily and Neffeny Emmerson. I don't have and children except Nathaniel David Pettice Thacker born 3/8/1761 and died Feb 8,1818. In 1780 Montgomery County they are living next to "Yates alias Smith" families. They will remain associated with the Yates, McMillion, Hawkins and Mankin families for decades. Michael Branson born abt 1681, son of Thomas the immigrant married a Rebecca. According to written history Absalom born 1740 who married Jemima Lorton abt 1760 was the son of Michael. If this is correct, Michael would have been almost 60 when Absalom was born. There are also stories that he was orphaned. Absalom did name his first child Michael and a daughter Rebecca. I have nothing on Michael or Rebecca after 1744. From the below Robert Yates 2nd wife Lydia was still Hatton in 1703. It's possible that Robert Yates and Elizabeth could have had a daughter born about 1703 named Rebecca. That would make her only 37 yrs old at Absalom's birth. This seems highly likely to be where Michael's wife came from.... Robt Yates born abt 1654 died 26 DEC 1713 in Charles County, Maryland Says he married #1 Rebecca Young...she was the widow of James Tyre...at the time of his death Robert was remarried to Lydia We have real birthdates for his sons: Robert 10 Apr 1690 and Charles 29 Apr 1692 In the probates of Nathaniel Veren and Lawrence Hoskins 1687 to 1689 we have "Administratrix: Rebecca Yates (relict of James Tyre (administrator of deceased}, now wife of Robert Yates." The same probate of Carr that left a legacy to James, son of James Tyer also left to Peter McMillion, son of George The Young comes from the probate of Elizabeth Young in 1697/1699. She left to Robert Yates, Mrs. Robert Yates and James and Bowles Tyer. Since at this time Robert and Rebecca already had 2 sons born and probably also daughters I think Rebecca's maiden name being Young is presumption. Leaving out her other grandchildren. It is probably more likely that Elizabeth Young has some family connection to Tyer than to Rebecca. Lawrence Hoskins Adm was Rebecca Tyer and his estate was all left to her son James. I think it just as likely that Rebecca was Rebecca Hoskins. Until I see further proof I'm not certain what Rebecca's maiden name was. Bowles Tyer died in 1707 and his widow was Jane who remarried Charles Jones. In 1716 when Jane Jones dies she lists her executors as "Brothers Robert and Charles Yates" What she means by this of course is BIL since they were l/2 brothers to her husband. Test: Anne Gwinn. Unfortunately at the time of his death he leaves out mention of his daughters...... Yates, Robert Sr., Chas. County, 19th Nov., 1713; 26th Dec., 1713. To eld. son Robert, ex., and hrs., 250 A., on 'Wicomico R., bought of Benony Foning and Hannah, his wife. to son Charles and hrs., 180 A., "Charles Yates, " 180 A., "Manchester," and 150 A., "Herds Mountains," also 50 A., "Arabia." to wife Lydia, absolutely, 160 A., "Wollring Field" and personalty belonging to Mr. Hatton's estate. (or Hawton) Test: Jno. Maddox., Wm. Goody, Chas. Jones. William Hawton/Hatton dies in 1703 and his wife is Lydia. His son William dies in 1709 - he mentions his FIL Robert Yates as executor. In Lydia Yates of 1718 will she mentions her grandchildren of William Hawton. Maj Robert Jr died in 1743 wife was Anne Gwinn has a son named Robt that dies in 1764. Robert Jr's other son was JONATHAN married to Elizabeth BRUCE ....Note this the document witnessed by Sarah BRANSON. Also note this is from a James SMITH. In Montgomery Co, VA the deeds for land are "Yates alias Smith" Charles County Land Record Book L#3, 1761-1765; Page 473. Mortgage. May 4, 1761 from James Smith of CC, planter, to John Fendall of CC, Gentleman, for 232 £ 10 shillings & 6 pence, a parcel of land commonly called Smith, situated in William and Mary Parish in CC, and on the north side of Potomack River on Petites Cr, and bounded on the south by sd Cr, on the east with a line drawn north from Smiths Bight into the woods, on the north with a line drawn west from the end of the former line until it intersects a parallel [line] drawn from Bennetts Branch, on the west with sd Branch and parallel [line], containing and now laid out for about 100 acres. If, however, sd James smith pays sd John Fendall the afd sum with legal interest on May 4, 1764, then these presents shall cease. CC, Nov 1, 1762, I hereby assign all my right to the within deed of mortgage to Mr_ Robert Yates, for the consideration of 253 £ 17 shillings & 6 pence, Signed - Jno Fendall. Wit - Sarah (B her mark) BRANSON, Francis Yates. Recorded-in CC I have no idea who this Sarah Branson is. In 1760 Absalom along with his cousins Thomas and John have taken off for Virginia. Perhaps she was the only remaining Branson of this line left in Maryland. Robert Sr's other son Charles has sons Charles, Francis, Theophilus, Robert and daughters Elizabeth Given, Jane Bruce and Rebecca Barber. Theophilus marries Anne Henley HAWKINS and names a son Henry SMITH Yates. In 1729 when Michael bought Canterbury the deed was witnessed by Robert Yates and John Brisco. This was probably his brother-in-law Major Robert Yates, Jr. As for John Brisco....his wife was Eleanor Williamson. He named a son Hezekiah. This was the first Hezekiah in the Brisco family and likely came from the Williamson side of the family. ===================================================================== Match: Bowles Source: MDSTMARY@rootsweb.com From: John Dobricky <john.dobricky@gmail.com> Subject: Re: [MDSTMARY] Robert Yates and the Bransons Hi. Great research! Just one thing.....the Rebecca who married James Tear/Tyer, etc., was born Rebeccal Bowles. That's where the "Bowles" in Bowles Tyer came from. Some researchers think her surname was "Young" because of her being mentioned in the Will of, as I recall, Elizabeth Young. Please remember that everyone married several times in those days so the fact that someone is named in the Will of someone who died with the surname "Young" does not mean much. Again, though, great work! With the records, Bowles makes perfect sense. It also connects with my Branson family a generation back. One of these days I'm going to figure out who Ann his wife was. If family legend was correct she was on the same boat with him when he immigrated in 1651 with Love and Hillard (but she would have only been 9 yrs old if true). I suspect Thomas came from Braunston Manor in England - it's rumored his Mother was well off. I know there is a definite Williamson relationship. From the below there was a connection to the Newman family or maybe the Ashcomb?? on either Thomas' side or his wife Ann. As you probably know Margery MNU Ashcomb came to America with her daughter Lydia Ashcomb. I read Margery married then Wm Batten and then after married John Bowles. Is this correct? Lydia Ashcomb marries George Newman and he and his wife deeded property back and forth to my Thomas Branson, the immigrant in 1662. One of the people paid from the estate of Thomas Branson was Dennis Hurly - he is related to the Derby Donnavin family also spelled in a variety of ways including Doniphan. ===================================================================== Match: Bowles Source: SC-BUSHRIVERQUAKERS@rootsweb.com From: Standcedargrove@aol.com Subject: [SC-BUSHRIVERQUAKERS] Evidence that John Cook of Bush River Ran a I have been aware that my mailing of 8/8/2009 in response to a mailing by Bob Cooke may not have been very clear. It also included an error in a name. The somewhat elderly John and Anna (Sumner) (George) Cook, along with their son, Martin Cook and his young family, had moved to the new Bear Creek Friends settlement in Union Township, Dallas County, IA, probably in 1854. Here they built a one story frame house which stood until about 1960. I remember it quite well. The elderly couple and the young family of Martin Cook shared the house, perhaps also Martin Cook's teen age brother, Uriah. The family of Johua Newlin, his wife Dianah, and Dianah's four Cook sons by her first marriage to Robert Cook, son of John Cook, arrived in the Bear Creek community about 1857. The oldest of Dianah's son was Harmon Cook. Perhaps the Joshua Newlin family had not had opportunity to construct very satisfactory living quarters by the winter of 1859/60. The Summit Grove Friends settlement was centered in the vicinity of present-day Stuart, Iowa, about ten miles from the center of the Bear Creek settlement. Darius Bowles, a member of the Summit Grove Friends, was a teacher of significant reputation who conducted a school at Summit Grove. The young Harmon Cook, who evidently had literary aspirations, enrolled in this school. He evidently had a place to stay at Summit Grove during the week, but he came home to Bear Creek on week-ends. In a section called "The Underground Railroad", pp. 202-205 of D. B. Cook's _History of Quaker Divide_ (Cover title: _Memoirs of Quaker Divide_), Harmon Cook wrote: "In the winter of 1859-60, I was going to school to Darius Bowles, and one Friday evening was told if I wanted to go to Bear Creek, I would not have to walk, if I would drive a carriage and return it Monday morning. I drove the carriage and in it were two young colored women. They were sisters and from the west border of Missouri. Their master was their father, and they had both been reared in the family. War was apparent, and their master decided to sell them "Down south." They heard the plotting and found out that they were to go on the auction block, and made a run for the North Star.. They had been on the road seven weeks when they arrived at A. W. L.'s at Summit Grove. Before daylight Saturday morning they were housed at Uncle Martin's ---------- " It appears that it was more convenient to house the girls at the house shared by the Martin Cook family with the grandparents John and Anna Cook than at the Joshua and Dianah (Cox) (Cook) Newlin dwelling. This is the only recorded time that the John Cook home was used to shelter fleeing slaves, although it appears that Harmon Cook was engaged in transporting slaves on at least one other occasion. --------- In my previous mailing, I mentioned that Wells McCool, who styled himself as a "conductor" on the Underground Railroad, was probably a descendant of Gamaliel McCool of the Bush River Quaker community. I should have written Gabriel McCool. The earliest Quaker settlers at Bush River must have included the family of Thomas and Ann Pugh. According to my records, Ann Pugh was born 29 March 1725, the daughter of James Wright and Mary Bowater. In 1742 she married James McCool. They had five children: as listed in the Bush River Birth and Death records: Mary. John, James, Martha, and Gabril. James McCool, the father, died 2-9-1751, aged 42 years. Ann (Wright) McCool then married Thomas Pugh. Ann and Thomas had seven daughters, who are listed in the Bush River Birth and Death records. By 1735 James and Mary (Bowater) Wright and family had settled in the Apple Pie Ridge area near the Hopewell Friends Meeting six or seven miles from Winchester, Virginia. Ann (Wright) (McCool) Pugh was a sister of John Wright who had married Rachel Wells. John and Rachel may have settled at Bush River as early as 1763/64. Thomas Pugh and family were granted a certificate from Bush River MM to Hopewell MM, VA on 4 mo. 26, 1777. I do not know whether they ever returned to South Carolina. My records indicate that Thomas and Ann were both buried in Frederick County, VA. Gabriel McCool, youngest son of Ann's first marriage, evidently remained in South Carolina. On 4 mo. 24, 1773 he had been disowned by Bush River MM for marriage out of unity (to his first cousin). On 8 mo. 31, 1782 he readmittead to membership. Gabriel had married Elizabeth Wright, daughter of John and Rachel (Wells) Wright. On 6 mo. 30, 1798 Gabriel McCool requested a minute from Bush River MM to travel in Virginia with his mother, Ann Pugh. Ann seems to have been a recognized minister among Friends. On 8 mo. 10, 1806 Gabriel McCool and family were granted a certificate by Bush River MM to Miami MM, Ohio. ----Herbert Standing.
===================================================================== Match: Bowles Source: MDSTMARY@rootsweb.com From: rubyslippers <rubyslippers@kc.rr.com> Subject: [MDSTMARY] Robert Yates and the Bransons The Charles County branch of Bransons went to Virginia in 1760. Signed - James Smith Sr. Wit - John Winter*, Robt Horner*, May 5, 1761. Recorded in Liber L No 3 folio 1, 2, Si 3 - Phil R'd Fendall, Clk. After two attempts, I have convinced the Cherokee Nation that the Boles have Cherokee roots! I submitted an application for membership to their FIRST FAMILIES OF THE CHEROKEE NATION (FFCN). I had to submit proof that James Boles was a lawful resident of the Cherokee Nation, East or West , prior to the ratification of the Cherokee Nation Constitution of Sept. 6, 1839. Along with the application of the lineage chart back to 1839 or earlier and proof that James Boles lived in the Cherokee Nation, East (birth records, marriage records land records and plats, etc.) I was fortunate to find a Land Record and Plat for James. Anyone interested in an application can e-mail genealogy@cherokeeheritage.org. James Boles, b.1760-5, in Abbeville SC (Old Cherokee Nation East) son of John and Anne Ramsey Boles. My lineage chart James Boles, William Boles, Levi Boles, Tommie Lee Boles, Orren Anderson, Jim L. Anderson. Last week I received a nice certificate from the Cherokee Historical Society stating "I am now a life member of the FFCN and a direct descendant of JAMES BOLES, a legal resident of the Cherokee Nation." They further stated " you may take pride in the fact that membership in FFCN is more difficult to obtain than any other Heraldic organizations". They have placed my genealogical data in their achieves of the Cherokee National Historical Society. Over 110 years ago, my grandmother Tommie Lee Boles and her father Levi C. Boles, applied for membership to the Cherokee Nation (Dawes case # 4618) and they were rejected because they could not prove that James Boles lived in the Old Cherokee Nation East. It is a shame that my grandparents did not have computers in those days, if so we might have Cherokee cards today. Jim Lee Anderson

That and a couple of the other references in that posting fit in very nicely with: Excerpt from a letter from Charlotte Heath (daughter of Susan Heath's sister Sarah so Susan Bowles would be Charlotte's Aunt) to her brother George not dated but about 1861: "Dear Brother, all our mothers brothers and sisters are all dead except Aunt Hannah Carpenter and Aunt Olding who are quite well and send their kind love to you and all our cousins except cousin Hannah Carpenter who has been very ill nearly 18 months and has been gone to Bath hospital about a fortnight. You wanted to know Uncle and Aunts names in Montreal their names are John Bowles and Susan Bowles for Aunt Hannah received a letter from them about 1 year and ago when they were all very well but she have not answered it yet as cousin Hannah has been ill almost ever since." John and Susan Bowles did indeed end up in Montreal and founded an extensive family which is still in the area.
