===================================================================== Match: Bowls Source: GEN-MAT-HX-L@rootsweb.com From: "Helen" <Helenh@pdq.net> Subject: Catholics of Southern Maryland-See names Catholic Families of Southern Maryland, Records of Catholic Residents of St. Mary's County in the Eighteenth Centuyry, Timothy J. O'Rourke, 1981, 1985. Blue cloth covered hardback with gilt printing, 6-1/4x9-1/4, x + 143 pages, everyname index. With the exception of the blind library stamp of the previous owner on the title and last index pages, this book is in very good unmarked condition. The county boasts the first Catholic parish established, first Catholic school, first religious community, and was the spearhead of the western expansion of Catholicism. In 1785, the first of many Catholic families crossed the mountains to find land in Kentucky, where a diocese was created for them in 1808, while others migrated to Georgia, Missouri, Louisiana, and Texas. Collected here are many of the earliest surviving records of the Catholic families of St. Mary's County, Maryland, including the marriages and baptisms from the Jesuit parishes of St. Francis Xavier and St. Inigoes. These baptisms (1767-1794) give the names of the children, parents and godparents, and the date of baptism. The marriages (1767-1784) give the names of the bride and groom and the date of the marriage. Other records include congregation lists (1768-1769). rent rolls and births with various dates, subscribers to the Oath of Allegiance (1778), militia lists (1794), and voters' lists (1789-1790). These records comprise an indespensible reference source and represent the most complete collection of such materials in print. Contents include: Foreword Introduction Maryland Catholic Subscribers to Boston Relief, 1760 Baptisms, St. Francis Xavier and St. Inigoes Congregations Abbreviations Relating to the Baptisms Surname variations in the Baptisms Marriages, St. Francis Xavier and St. Ingoes Congregations Census, St. Ingoes Congregation, 1768 Census, St. Ingoes Congregation, 1769 Baptisms, St, Joseph's Congregation, by Father Moseley Catholics Listed in Manorial Rent Rolls, St. Mary's Co. This is a withdrawn library book with the usual pocket, markings, and it is stamped "withdrawn". The call number data has been removed from the spine and it looks like and eighth of an inch of the spine went with it! Otherwise, the book is in good unmarked condition and judging from the amount of tremendous research in the ook, it surely must have taken years to put together. Very impressive! This is an important research tool for all Hutchins who participated in the Revolutionary War, and especially those in the New England colonies.I cannot stress enough the amount of data included in this book! It also includes the "Hutchins Genealogy", and reprinted here, compiled by Charles Hutchins, printed in Boston in 1885. Facts & Genes provides valuable information about utilizing Genetic Genealogy testing for your genealogy, and keeps you informed about the latest advancements in the field. Last month, I asked in the newsletter about the oldest participant, and would like to thank all those who responded. It was quite amazing to find so many participants in their 90's and a few in their 100's, which is evidence of the willingness of the senior population to explore new technologies. The oldest participant reported was 103 when they took a DNA test, as part of the International Dalton Surname Project. The next oldest participant was 102, and a member of the Faux Surname Project. If you have older relatives, especially if they are the last male in a branch, you may want to get their sample stored now, while you still have an opportunity. If you are sponsoring the test, and working within a budget, consider the 12 Marker test, which can always be upgraded at a later date. A number of people have asked me what I knew about DNA testing---whether it could tell you whether you had any Native American ancestry or where you could go to find out which African tribe your ancestors hailed from, or whether you were in a particular branch of the Bowles trees. I haven't had any answers until now, when I stumbled upon an excellent website that refers people to all kinds of other websites to answer those questions. From reading some of them I can see that the prices are coming down. Depending upon what kinds of answers you're looking for, family gatherings might be a good time to ask one of your relatives if they'd like to contribute a few cells from the inside of their mouths, say, if you are female and the test asks for only males. Or vice versa. No blood samples required. To get the whole story, go to: http://genealogy.about.com/od/dna_testing/ And then let us all know the results. Yours, Linne
Bowles, Nathaniel b: ABT. 1785 in VA. buried in White Cem, Sulphur Lick, Monroe Co, KY This is a new one for me. More than likely he is a son of Elijah Bowles and Mary. If so, this would put Elijah in VA in 1785. We know he was in Richmond City in 1782-83, now where did he go between 1785 and 1809 when he came to Barren Co,KY? Any help would be appreciated. Now we have these sons for Elijah: Clabourne, Christian, Nathaniel, Anderson, John, and Zachariel (from Anderson's Will). What about this William below? We know John Fleming married 1812 in Barren Co with father present, and John Fleming (Jacke) is listed with a William below. Could this William be another son of Elijah and father of John Fleming, William Thomas, and Nathan Anderson? At this point I am guessing that William is the father, and son of Elijah. He named his first son John Fleming after his good friend John Fleming from PA where Elijah left William when he came to VA to fight the War. Leathel, Elijah Boles of Barren Co. to Clabon Boles, 1811. $300, Peters Creek, John Middleton....Teste: Johiors (sic) Burr, Jacke Bowles, Wm Bowles. ( Note: Johiors (sic) Burr is John Byars)
