    3. I can't add anymore to this subject other than what I have already sent and what Charlie has sent.I would take the test, if it would help. I have my line back to John Fleming born about 1790. I don't know who his father was for sure, but think his grandfather to be Elijah Bowles born 1751. The only Bowles I know that can connect to Elijah is Kelly Bowles. Without Kelly doing the DNA my test would be of no help. In other words I need Kelly to do the DNA test for me to link to Elijah without a document of some kind. We only have a 5 year span for Elijah in VA, that was when he was 28 to 33 years old. Have some good leads on both of their fathers, still looking. Leathel,

    3. Before you jump into DNA testing with two feet, please do go to the links I gave in my last message and read up on what DNA testing will and won't tell you. Generally speaking, if you and another Bowles descendent test with the 25 marker test and match up on all 25 markers, what that means is that there is a 50% likelihood that you share a common ancestor within the last 7 generations; a 90% likelihood that you share a common ancestor within the last 23 generations, and a 95% likelihood that you share a common ancestor within the last 30 generations. While these numbers can be tweaked a bit, what they should tell you is that this test will NOT tell you definitively if you share great-grandfathers. We won't get into the question of mutations in markers here, read the info on the websites I listed. So what good is DNA testing? What you need to do is use it in relation with what you already know from other documentation. For example if you know that your Bowles ancestor was in Barren County KY between 1800-1820, and you match up with someone else who also had such an ancestor then there is a stronger likelihood that these ancestors were related somehow. Don't forget the negative side of DNA testing. It can help you to rule out relationships more quickly than it can confirm them. Then there is always the possibility of two folks who really believe that they are descended from the same ancestor, and have documentation to prove it, finding out that one of them isn't a Bowles descendent after all. If you can't handle the possibility that this might be true of you, don't test. What about the cost? Well, the last time I checked the cost for a 25 marker Y-DNA test was $169. This is the group rate. Yes it is a bit high, but think for a minute how much you already have invested in genealogy in both time and money. Truthfully the more folks who get involved with this, the more likely it is that you will learn something valuable. Feel free to ask questions, but do read the stuff on the websites. Charlie

    3. I have a couple of questions. My Bowles line comes through my mother, then my grandmother, Elizabeth Bowles. So, if I understand you correctly, I can't be tested for Bowles? I would have to get my cousin, who is a male Bowles descendant to take the test? My maiden name is Stover, but I would have to get my brother to take the test? So, I am a bit confused. What would I take the test for? What I mean, is if I did the test myself, what would that tell me? When you take the test, and get your results, can you use the same results for other families?. Or would you have to take seperate tests for each surname you want to try to track down? I read the site, I just didn't understand much. :( Thanks, Gracie Charles Hartley wrote: > Before you jump into DNA testing with two feet, please do go to the > links I gave in my last message and read up on what DNA testing will > and won't tell you. > > Generally speaking, if you and another Bowles descendent test with the > 25 marker test and match up on all 25 markers, what that means is that > there is a 50% likelihood that you share a common ancestor within the > last 7 generations; a 90% likelihood that you share a common ancestor > within the last 23 generations, and a 95% likelihood that you share a > common ancestor within the last 30 generations. 2. Charley, I've been looking for you. I've been hoping someone would start a Bowles DNA project. I'm 3 generations from my Bowles family so I'll have to scratch around to find a male in the Bowles line but I'll start looking. I'm in a couple of other DNA groups and they are both FamilyTree. I didn't know there was any other company doing this right now. Hope you find a bunch of willing 'Bowles. The more who test. the more helpful the results. Thanks . Elizabeth Little

    1. DNA Testing Options
    2. Charles Hartley
    3. Some things you need to know about DNA testing: 1. If you are testing a surname line, like Bowles, then those who are tested must be male, be a Bowles, and have a clear line of paternal descent from a Bowles. It doesn't work if you are female, or if you are male whose Bowles ancestry comes through a female Bowles. This is the Y-DNA test. 2. If you are seeking a maternal descent, mother to daughter to granddaughter, etc. then the test you want is the mtDNA test. The webpage at http://www.familytreedna.com/description.html has good descriptions of these tests. So, if what you are seeking is to connect various known Bowles lines, then you need male Bowles descendents to test. For example, if you wanted to confirm a connection between the line of John Fleming Bowles with that of the John Bowles who married Celia White (my line) you would need a confiirmed descendent of each line to test. Before you decide to test, understand that there are three levels of Y-DNA testing: 12 markers, 25 markers, and 37 markers. The 12 marker test is only useful for ruling out a connection; the 25 marker test will give you a clearer match. The 37 marker test is only necessary if you have two identical 25 marker tests and you want to narrow down how long in the past it is likely that you are related. For a better explanation of this subject check out the page at http://blairgenealogy.com/dna/dna101.html which is quite well done. The page at http://www.familytreedna.com/surname.asp gives more information about setting up a group, including the need for a group administrator. While I can't test for the Bowles line, if enough Bowles folks are interested in testing, I would be willing to serve as the group administrator. The reason I know a bit about all of this is that I have been tested for my surname line. Charlie

    3. ===================================================================== Match: Bowles Source: GEN-MAT-15-L@rootsweb.com From: "Helen" <Helenh@pdq.net> Subject: Washington County, Kentucky - See Names Washington County, Kentucky Deed Abstracts, 1811-1814, Volume 3, Faye Sea Sanders, 1993. Softcover, 8-1/2x11, 88 pages, indexed. The book does have a short listing (5) of deed numbers and pages on the introduction page; some pages have been marked with paperclips, and there were some light pencil underlinings and notations. I have erased all these and they were so light that one can barely see where they were. However, I left one pencil notation indicating the father of a married woman, and two additional witnesses to a deed. It looks like the bottom right corner has been bent at one time, but other than those faults, the book is in good, clean condition. From the introduction we learn: "Washington County, Ky. was formed in 1792, the first born of the new state of Kentucky, the previous nine having been established by Virginia....From this territory were taken part of Anderson in 1827, and the whole of Marion in 1834..." so those with ancestors in those two counties may find earlier references in this book. 3. Bowles List, I would be willing to participate in a DNA group if someone wants to organize the effort. I have a Barsheba Bowles of Orange County, NC in 1805 that I can not trace. There are several laboratories that do DNA and each has a few differences. Is there some consensus on the best one to use? 2. I am Robert Collett and I have been trying to get information on my grandmother, Martha C. Bowles b. 1860 and was married to my grandfather, ("Logging") John Collett. Martha was born in what was then Harlan County, Kentucky. With the creation of Bell County, Kentucky, that part of Harlan where she was born became a part of Bell County, Ky. I could send the information I have on Martha's ancestors if it were relevant. I have had excellent luck in confirming or proving the link between my grandfather, John Collett and his probable ancestors by using DNA testing. 3. I have given some thought to the DNA testing, but havn't quite gotten that far yet. :) My ancestor, Jeremiah Bowles was born abt 1816 in Franklin Co, VA and was md to Mary Ann Waldon. They moved to Putnam Co, VA/WV by the 1850 census. There was an elder Jeremiah Bowles in Franklin Co, and he was md to Elizabeth Martin. The Giles Co Historical book says that my Jeremiah was the s/o Joseph and Elizabeth - not the elder Jeremiah. Bowles is not the only line I have stuck in Franklin Co, VA, which seems to be a good place to lose your family in. :) CollettRo@aol.com wrote: >I am Robert Collett and I have been trying to get information on my >grandmother, Martha C. 3. ===================================================================== Match: Bowles Source: TNANDERS-L@rootsweb.com From: AngelaMeadows3@aol.com Subject: (no subject) Posse Hunts Killer Of Sheriffs Deputy CLINTON.Tenn. (AP) A former convict sought on a murder charge and the killing of a sheriff's deputy was the object of an intensive search today in east Tennessee. Police are seeking Clarence Leon Raby, 26, of near Knoxville, in the robbery-slaying of an Anderson County merchant and the killing of a Union County deputy sheriff. The merchant was slain July 7. The deputy was killed Monday. Another man was shot to death and his father wounded critically in an exchange of gunfire with police searching for Raby. Dan Cooper, 27, was killed and his father, Kaley Cooper, 52, was wounded by Knox County officers who were hunting for Raby with bloodhounds. Knox County Sheriff E.B. Bowles said four of his deputies felled the Coopers after the latter opened fire at the officers with a rifle and shotgun. The sheriff said Kaley Cooper, shot in the arm and chest, had been charged with felonious assault with intent to murder. Bowles said the Coopers, residents of the Heiskell community where Raby lives, had ambushed his officers. Heiskell is about 15 miles southeast of here. The elder Cooper, who underwent surgery at a Knoxville hospital, told police: "We thought you were Raby." But Chief Deputy Sheriff Jim Colquitt, one of the four officers, said the bloodhounds were baying and added: "I don't see how it was possible for them (the Coopers) to think the four of us were Raby." Authorities said Raby gunned down Ben DeVault, Union County deputy sheriff, after he and a brother, Lloyd, spotted the fugitive on a rural road 20 miles to the east. DeVault. 58. shot at Raby in a truck which the latter commandeered from Fred Rutherford, a farmer. Raby, armed with a pistol, felled the officer with a bullet in the head. The killer released Rutherford unharmed and later abandoned the truck on the outskirts of Knoxville, 25 miles to the southeast. Police there said a man answering Raby's description held up a couple outside a tavern, pistol whipped the woman and fled in their car. The car was found abandoned a few miles from Knoxville. Raby and another Knox County man, Billy McCoy, 22, have been charged with murder in the holdup-slaying of Frank C. Keith, 61, at his Andersonville, Tenn., store last month. Officers said two gunmen took about $1,000 from Keith before felling him with a shotgun blast. Raby has served a brief term in the state prison for theft. Police said he escaped from the Knox County workhouse near Knoxville the day before Keith was slain. He was serving a sentence on a drunken driving conviction. McCoy. who had been sentenced on a forgery charge, escaped with Raby Source: Stevens Point Daily Journal Stevens Point, Wisconsin August 2, 1960 =========================
