    3. THE END Leathel, From the "Historical Southern Families", Vol. XIV, Etheridge of Norfolk County, Virginia there is the following note: - William Etheridge Jr. owned 80 acres in Norfolk County in the Quitrent Roll of 1704. On 14 September 1709, William made a deed of gift of these 80 acres to his son William Etheridge Jr. and on 13 December 1711, William Etheridge Jr. deeded to Jonas Lawson 50 acres, which had been granted to John Portlock in 1687. Notes from Princess Anne Co, VA. Jonas Cawson d. 1726, Norfolk Co. Deposition of Mrs. Abigail Cawson alas Whiddon, aged about 50 years. Taken July 5, 1738. She was married to Jonas Cawson about 29 years ago by Rev. Mr. McMioner , then minister in Norfolk County , that Keziah their first born died in 1732. She had heard the said Jonas Cawson speak of his native country, Old England, saying he was born in Lancaster in England, and he told her that he expected an estate to fall to him from his father and mentioned it in his will. Deposition of Ann Trevethan, aged about 60 years, taken July 5, 1738. She was intimately acquainted with Mr. Jonas Cawson, late of Norfolk County , deceased, and was at the celebration of a marriage between him and a certain Abigail Church. A minister of the Church of England performed the ceremony. They had several children, viz.: Keziah, Christopher, Argal, Ann, Abigail, and Jonas. He died 1726, and his son Keziah died about 1732, and also Christopher Cawson and eldest son and said Jonas made a will. 1. ? Lawson 1. Jonathan Lawson 2. 3. I'm about to rap this up. This probably should have been sent to the Lawson list only, but from the response I had earlier from the Bowles list, I'm sending this post and one more to both list. You can't get to much information. If you do, just delete it. Leathel, According to a deposition, dated July 2lst, 1738. and recorded in Norfolk Co., George Newton, second of the name, was born in or about the year 1678. .This deposition shows that he went to school in the town of Lancaster, England. It is as follows : "The Deposition of George Newton, aged sixty years or thereabouts, being examined & Sworn, Saith : That in the year 1692 And in the year of Our Lord God 1693. This deponent was at school in the Kingdom of England in the Town of Lancaster & Lancashire, And lived with Mr. Thomas Westmore in the said Town & this Deponerit knew Jonas Cawson, who then went to the free School belonging unto the Town of Lancaster, by the Church Yard, And this Deponent was well acquainted with two of the said Jonas Cawson's Brothers that went to a private schoole with this Deponent in Lancaster town, One of his Brothers name was Jonathan Cawson, the other name I have forgot being long since as appears by this Deposition. And this De- ponent further saith that he hath several times seen Mr Cawson, whom both Jonathan Cawson & Jonas Cawson called Father, but dont remember his Christian name, but always understood when I was in the Town of Lancaster, that the then old Mr Cawson was Jonathan Cawson & Jonas Cawson Father & lived some small Distance in the Country from the town of Lancaster. And that after this Deponent returned from England to his Native place in Virginia & lived sometime there this Jonas Cawson came to Virginia & happening in Company with him after some Communication with him this Deponent remembered that it [sic] said Jonas Cawson that this Deponent was well acquainted with at and when he was at School in the Town of Lancaster in England, And also talked many times with the said Jonas Cawson about his Father & Brother, and that some few years after his coming to Virginia he the said Jonas Cawson intermarried with one Abigail Church by whom he had Christopher Cawson his eldest son : And further saith not."

    2. Leathel Bowles
    3. Bellinda, I don't know if Elizabeth Cawsey was married to John Straton at this time, but he was in Northumberland Co in 1651. I have read of women being married to three different men in same week. I'm begining to wonder about Elizabeth? There is a John Lawren listed after Edward Bowles, not sure if Lawrence or Lawson. I believe Willian Bolton is William Batten from MD, John Bowles married his wife. If I remember right William had a son Coningham. Edward Bowles died in MD in 1659, he was a brother to John who married William Battens wife. John Bowles who married William Battens wife was a son of John Bowles who made will in Elizabeth City in 1664. John gave his son John all his land, some of the land belong to Anna a daughter of Elizabeth (Southy, Southell)Cawsey who was married to John Bowles in 1664. 3. Things moved faster than I thought they would! The Bowles DNA Surname Project, in conjunction with Family Tree DNA, is now officially open for business. The following link will take you to the webpage where you can join the group and place your order for a Y-DNA kit. http://www.familytreedna.com/surname_join.asp?code=W26816&special=true While Family Tree DNA offers a variety of DNA kits, you will want to select from the three Y-DNA kits: Y-DNA12 -- Male 12 marker paternal test ... $99(Group) Y-DNA25 -- Male 25 marker paternal test ... $169(Group) Y-DNA37 -- Male 37 marker paternal test ... $229(Group) If you choose either the 12 marker or 25 marker test, you may upgrade it later for an additional fee. Personally I recommend the 25 marker test to start. The odds are good that you will want to upgrade from 12 to 25 markers later, and doing the 25 marker test first will save you $20. The 37 marker test may be overkill to begin, and should you later find a need for it, you can upgrade for a fee. Feel free to ask me questions. You may contact me from the "Contact the Bowles Group Administrator" link on the webpage given above, or you may email directly at [mailto:hartley@iglou.com]. One final note: I did not attempt to list variants of the Bowles surname since there are potentially so many of them, but all with variant spellings are welcome and encouraged to join in. 2. Hi, Leathal and all, I constantly am connecting with information about one family group of one surname on another of the surname lists especially when I am researching my names from the 1600s... and have been looking for anything for this Elizabeth CAWSEY for a long time so I am very excited to finally see some activity about her possibly being from this group. This is the first time that I have found anything that might connect. Looking forward to hearing more of anything that you or anyone else on the group might have. Bellinda In a message dated 12/11/2004 12:15:08 PM Central Standard Time, LEATHEL@worldnet.att.net writes: Belinda, this is what I wanted is for somebody to have questions about these posts. That was the reason I sent the post to both list because of the surnames and connection between both families. I don't know anything about this Elizabeth. Elizabeth Southy had a daughter Elizabeth that died in 1624.It is not uncommon for her to name another daughter Elizabeth. She could be the wife of either John or Anthony Cawsey? I want to add something else to the posts. A update list of settlers in James City for 1607 by Capt.John Smith lists labourers: William Cassen, George Cassen, and Thomas Cassen. William Laxon as a carpenter. My guess is these names belong the the Cawsey-Lawson group. I didn't think it important to list these names because the files I sent start Thomas Cawsey and Thomas Lawson in 1620. One has land the other had a family? I'll look futher into you post. Leathel, I am probably jumping in in the middle and may have missed previously conversation regarding same...but do you know if Elizabeth SOUTHY and Thomas CAWSEY or Thomasine and Nathaniel CAWSEY. Did either of these couples have a daughter named Elizabeth CAWSEY? A date of birth in the timeframe around 1624 would put a child named Elizabeth CAWSEY, born to one of these couples or related somehow, into the right timeframe and the right location to have been the Elizabeth CAWSEY/CAUSEY who married a man named ? HOWELL, possibly, as her 1st husband, if, indeed, she was a CAWSEY by birth. Then this Mrs. Elizabeth CAWSEY HOWELL married as her 2nd/3rd husband, (Sir) John EARLE, as his 2nd wife, after the death of his 1st wife, Mary SYM(M)ON(D)S, in 1659. John and Elizabeth married in 1660, a few months after Mary's death, and then (Sir) John EARLE, died in September 1660 at the age of 48 years having been born in 1612 in Nye, Winscombe, Somersetshire, England. He died at his estate "Spring Neck," Earle's Creek, Yeocomico Plantation, Northumberland County, Virginia, which he had built for his 1st wife, Mary, and their children, 3 of whom immigrated with their mother in 1652, Samuel, Mary, and son, John, while the 4th child, William, stayed to finish his education in England and immigrated later. Their father, (Sir) John EARLE, had immigrated in 1649 after visiting America previously and upon his immigration in 1649 into St. Mary's County, Maryland he immediately went into Northumberland County, Virginia where he acquired Yeocomico Plantation from the Indians and built "Spring Neck" which would later be inherited by his 2nd wife, Mrs. Elizabeth CAWSEY HOWELL EARLE, who married, again, to 3rd/4th husband, William CLEMENT, a few months after the death of John EARLE in September 1660.

    2. Hi, again, In the following message, and in relation to the message that I just sent about searching for information on the Elizabeth CAWSEY who married as the 2nd wife to my 8th great grandfather, (Sir) John EARLE, in that information I mentioned that he was born in 1612 in Somerton, Nye, Winscombe, Somersetshire, England, and then connected with the information regarding the BOWLES-LAWSON-CAWSEY, as shown below, and I will pick up after that below: In a message dated 12/10/2004 1:29:41 PM Central Standard Time, cokerrb@ns.sympatico.ca writes: <<Leathel Bowles wrote: The reason > for posting to both list about the Lawson- Cawsey is you will find some > surnames that are connected to both families.I guess I had better start back > in 1607 with Nathaniel Cawsey. If anyone has any more information connecting this WINSCOMB(E) family group with the area of Winscombe, Somersetshire, England and the EARLE/EHRLE(I)GH/de E(H)RLEIGH family out of same and the CAWSEY/CAUSEY family that would probably connect to the Elizabeth CAWSEY who married as 2nd wife of (Sir) John EARLE, I would be most interested to hear. 2. Hello, Re: <<We have Thomas Cawsey coming to VA in 1620 and in two locations by 1624. In 1624 he is in Charles City Co with Nathaniel and his wife. What is the relationship between Thomas and Nathaniel whose wife was Thomasine in 1609? How old was Thomas in 1624, if he married Elizabeth Southy at some time, who had several children in 1624 when her husband died? Was he married in 1624? I think I can answer that, but first I need to send another post or two. Leathel>> Re: (Sir) John EARLE of England, immigrant in 1649, through St. Mary's County, Maryland into Northumberland County, Virginia, md: wife # 1: Mary SYM(M)ON(D)S, md: wife # 2: Elizabeth CAWSEY, (md: husb: # 1: ? HOWELL, husb: # 2: (Sir) John EARLE, husb: # 3: William CLEMENT, (unless CAWSEY was not her maiden name and name from a previous husband.) (See following) I am probably jumping in in the middle and may have missed previously conversation regarding same...but do you know if Elizabeth SOUTHY and Thomas CAWSEY or Thomasine and Nathaniel CAWSEY. Looking forward to hearing from anyone who might be able to help identify this Elizabeth CAWSEY. Thank you. He came to Virginia in 1620. In 1620, Nathaniel Cawsey, who came in 1607, and his wife Thomasine, who came in 1609, were living with 5 servants at Charles City. The town of Charles City was at the present City Point, at the mouth of the Appomattox. The lands belonging to these men was called, after the alliterative fashion of the time, " Cawsey's Care," and was represented under that name in the House of Burgesses in 1632. From this name was derived the later "Cawsons," long a seat of the Bland family, and the birthplace of John Randolph of Roanoke.
