    3. Hi Charles, I signed up for the testing. I wonder if we ought not put together a list of participants with their known Bowles roots? 1. Re: Bowles in GA
    2. Hi, Brenda, Any chance that you have ever had reason to connect this BOWLES family group of North Carolina with the BOWLES family of (Chief) John BOWLES, born: Abt. 1746/1750 in North Carolina, son of ? BOWLES, a Scottish descended trader, and his Cherokee wife, name unknown? (Chief) John BOWLES would later live in several places throughout the south including being in Missouri until 1811 and then in Arkansas until 1819 and then into East Texas until his death in 1839. Sincerely, Bellinda Myrick-Barnett In a message dated 12/16/2004 2:38:37 PM Central Standard Time, BrendaBP@aol.com writes: Are any of the list members descended from William Bowles/Booles (m. Sally Bevin) who settled in Wilkes/Green Cos. area of GA after the Revolutionary War? I'm also interested in John Bowles/Booles and Jesse Bowles/Booles who were found living close to this William around the early 1800s. There's good evidence that this William Bowles/Booles was brother of my Benjamin Bowles of NC (and John, Jesse above may also be related). I would like to track down some descendants of these guys in hopes of finding someone who would be interested in participating in the DNA project. Brenda

    3. My apologies for the strange symbols in this posting. The original also had odd symbols in it, so there's not much I can do about it. The James Bowles that you're looking for is about two-thirds of the way down in the document. Most entries will list name of testator (in bold); those persons bearing relationship to the testator, if stated in the will, are in bold type also. All others are in Roman Type. The county of testator follows the name in the same line if it is given in the will itself, and if none appears in the abstract the inference must be drawn that it is lacking in the will. The dates of drawing and of the probate of each are placed one above the other; that of probate under that of drawing. If either date does not appear in the Calendar a line of dashes is placed in the respective place to indicate the fact that it is lacking in the will as recorded, and if, as is the case in a few instances, neither date of drawing nor that of probate appears in the will, a double line of dashes is substituted. The numbers at the foot of each abstract give the number of the book and the page from which it has been taken. Almost all the abstracts in the Calendar have been taken directly from the wills, as recorded in the will-books among the proceedings of the Prerogative Court of the Province. Search this database if your ancestors were among the many who settled in Maryland. Source Information: Cotton, Jane Baldwin., Maryland Calendar of Wills, - Vol. I-VIII (8). I know almost nothing at all of my Hicks ancestors. Here is what I do have. I hope someone notices a family connection. I know that my Andrew Hicks married a Martha (Mattie) Rhea Bowles. At some point Andrew Hicks and Mattie (Bowles) Hicks lived in or near Bath, Colorado about 1899 when their daughter Lena was born. After that they were in Coffey County, Kansas (and possibly were in KS before CO too). Then Lena Hicks married a Garrett and they were living in Loveland, Larimer, CO in 1924. I'd really like to identify this Andrew Hicks. He must have been born about 1865, give or take a few years. I believe he has lived in KY, Coffey Co. KS, and Bath Co. His wife later lived in CA, but I have know idea when or where Andrew Hicks died. 1. ANDREW1 HICKS was born in Kentucky. He married MARTHA RHEA BOWLES, daughter of JEHU BOWLES and MARTHA PATTERSON. She was born May 02, 1869 in Nolin, Kentucky, and died April 30, 1938 in Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara Co., California. Children of ANDREW HICKS and MARTHA BOWLES are: i. LENA PEARL2 HICKS, b. Don't know when or where they were married. They have a son, Homer Lawrence Hicks, b. March 31, 1893 who stated on his SS-5 application that his birthplace was Gentryville, MO. According to modern maps there are TWO Gentryville, MO--one in the southern part of the state, and one in the northern part of the state. Do any of you have Hicks ancestry/connections in the late 1800s in MO? Any from Gentryville?

This may or may not be new to you, but here is what little I found. Emden is on the west edge of Orvil Township. In the reprint of the 1873 plat map, most of the southwest half of the township was owned by William Scully. A man named William Green owned 160 acres, the east 1/4 of Section 33 north, Orvil township (survey township 22 north), which abuts Tazewell County. I did not see the names Kelsey or Robertson as owner of any of the Orvil township land. That would suggest that if they lived in Orvil, they would have been tenant farmers, pretty common for that area. Same result looking at the 1893 plat map for Orvil - William Green owns the same farm, but I do not see Kelsey or Robertson as farm owners. But the 1893 atlas also has a Historical Directory of individuals. William Green is not shown. There is a W.S Green listed as a farmer and stock raiser in Section 36 of Broadwell township, P.O. Lincoln, but this is a different person - born 1868 and to the county in 1892. There was a James Green at the opposite corner of Logan County. Shown as a farmer and stock raiser in Lake Fork Twp, Sec. 22, born 1832 in Ireland and came to the county in 1858.No Kelsey or Robertson listing. The book I have also shows the 1910 plat. This issue has a "patrons' reference directory", but none of your three names are mentioned. The former 160 acres owned by William Green is now listed to William Baldwin. I did spot a rural church location at the southwest corner of Section 1 on the 1910 plat, but the name is not identified. However, the 1982 History of Logan County, p. 104 confirms that a Bethel Church was 4 1/2 miles east of Emden, beginning with an 1853 log church. It was replaced with a new building in 1873 and "is still in use today (abt 1981). The story says the congregation was an offshoot from "the old Sugar Creek Church", at a more convenient location for 19 named charter members with names of Ryan, Shirley, Waters, Miller, Sumner, Rhyan, Bowles, and Shirley. The 1878 History of Logan County lists several Green families and one Kelsy, but no Robertson. The ones in Orvil Township: Green, John H. renter, Sect 33 north (the Orvil political township is 7 miles N-S, so includes the two each of survey townships Secs. 31-36. the "north" indicates it is at the top of the political township, hence on the north line of Logan County), P.O Emden, republican, liberal, from Massachusetts. Green, John J., renter, Sec. 33, P.O. Hartsburg, republican, liberal, from New York. Green, Thomas G., renter, Sec. 33 north, P.O. Emden, republican, liberal. Green, William, farmer and stock raiser, Sec. 33 north, P.O. Emden. Born England on March 12, 1810, to US in 1853, republican, liberal, married Jane Geddees on Aub. 14, 1832. She was born in England June 12, 1810. Had 6 children, 4 dead and two living (Thomas and John) Kelsy, James H. farmer, ,Sec. 4, P.O. Emden; democrat; Christian; from New York. The index shows one carpenter named Green in the 1878 listing and a farmer named Green in East Lincoln township. and a widow Green in Laenna Township who was from Maine. Also, the Logan County rolls of the Civil War include the names of Joseph T., Thomas G, Oorlando, Hiram, and Samuel F. Green, together with their date of entry and death or mustering out. Unfortunately, I have no information on whether Bethel church still operates, or where its records might be. Good Luck! George Irwin

    3. William T. Bowles, son of Henry Bowles of Bedford Co., VA, married Ann L. Harrison in Cabell Co., VA (now WV) in 1814 and lived in Hickman Co., KY. William T.'s youngest son was William H. (age 0-5 in 1830). His other children were Watson Buford Bowles (1820-1874) and Bradford Harrison Bowles (1824-1899), both of whom ended up in Texas. I have no idea what happened to William H. Bowles. Does anyone know anything about this family? Annette LEATHEL@worldnet.att.net wrote: > Charlie,my guess is that William H age 19, was the son of this William > H Bowles. Franklin P.
