UNDRESSED PARADE Mrs. Ida Moore, a denizen of Rowdy Row, was before police judge Watson Monday on the charge of drunkenness disorderly conduct and using obscene language. One of the charges against her was that she paraded up and down the street in fewer cloths than Mother Eve wore away back in the days when clothes did not count for much. This accusation the accused denied with great vehemence. She stoutly adhered to the claim that she had on a corset and neck ribbon. The judge, who is somewhat inclined to be worldly and has seen considerable of life, thought she should even wear more clothing than that when out on the streets in this climate, at any rate, and fined her five dollars on one charge, ten on another, the costs in both cases, and sent her to the county jail, where they heat the premises by a furnace. 1. [DNA] When Should We Do DNA Tests?
    2. Charles Hartley
    3. Note: the following comes from the newsletter published by the Family Tree DNA. Details are at the end of this message. You may be considering the Y-DNA test for the Bowles DNA Project, but wonder when you should do it. The following may help. ----- Situation: ========= There is only one surviving direct male descendent in your line, traced back to the early 1800's with documented research. You are not ready to join a project and haven't researched other lines with your surname. You never find the time to spend to understand DNA testing. Your direct male descendent is in his late 40's. Recommendation: ============== On the surface, it appears that you have plenty of time to learn about DNA testing, and have your relative tested. Unfortunately, once this direct male descendent is gone -- you can probably never get a DNA sample. In the situation where there is only one surviving direct male descendent, regardless of their age, we recommend immediate testing. Either the 12 or 25 marker test will do. Any time in the future, others with your surname can be approached to be tested for comparison. The objective today is to get a sample from your relative and have it tested to ensure that you will not be denied the opportunity in the future. You will then have the results for the direct male descendent, the results will be stored in our database, and the sample will be stored for your future use. If there are as few as three direct male descendents in your tree, we recommend immediate testing of two of the males. The reason to select two is to confirm that there were no adoptions or extramarital male births. Often, it is only a priority to test males if they are elderly. The issue is not age. If the person is gone, for all practical purposes, their DNA is gone. We were able to assist a client late last year, whose only direct male descendent was killed in a car accident. Securing the sample took tremendous effort, and the involvement of the spouse for approval and the medical examiner for a sample. It was sheer luck that the client remembered in such a stressful situation, and contacted Family Tree DNA on a Saturday night at midnight, so that we could immediately overnight a collection kit. In summary, if you have a small number of direct male descendents in your line, we recommend immediate testing of two participants, to confirm a match and to have the sample and results stored for future reference. If you do not get an exact match, expand the testing to any remaining direct male descendents to determine where and when a non-paternity event occurred, such as adoption. 1. [DNA] - Genetic Genealogy & Your Research
    2. Charles Hartley
    3. This begins a series of messages to help all of us better understand the implications of DNA on our family research. These messages will be taken from a newsletter published periodically by Family Tree DNA. You may subscribe to the newsletter by going to [http://www.familytreedna.com/fgregister.asp] and filling in the form. ----- What will Genetic Genealogy do for your research? ================================================= The term Genetic Genealogy refers to the application of science, through testing DNA, to uncover information about your ancestors. There are currently two types of tests available to the general public: the Y-DNA test and the mtDNA test. The Y-DNA test tells you about your male ancestors, and the mtDNA test tells you about your female ancestors. The Y-DNA test is for males only as it tests the Y chromosome, which is only found in males and is inherited from the father's direct paternal line (grandfather to father to son). Scientists have determined that the Y chromosome is passed from father to son unchanged, except for random mutations that are estimated to take place only once per 500 generations per marker. The direct line of descent for males is critical. Events such as adoption or an extramarital male birth would break this chain. All males with a direct line of descent from your most distant known male ancestor should have the same Y chromosomal pattern, or genetic fingerprint, except for the random mutations. If you compare the genetic fingerprints of these male descendents today, they should match. How can this help you in your research? Testing the Y chromosome can verify what is known. It can point you in a direction for further research, or prove or disprove a relationship or theory. Family Tree DNA's Y-DNA test can find others to whom you are related. It might point you to a specific geographic location for further research. The individual reasons for doing Y-DNA testing vary significantly, from curiosity to specific genealogical research goals to large surname projects. Here are just a few examples of the use of Y-DNA testing. For example, suppose two immigrants, who came to the U.S. in 1740, had the same surname, but you can't connect them. By testing direct male descendents of each immigrant, you can determine whether or not the two immigrants were related. In another situation, your family legend is that your surname was changed on immigration. All persons with the new surname found in the US fit into your tree. Your grandfather gave you two possible original surnames. By testing descendents of the two possible original surnames, you could determine if you were related to either. In another example, you have found your surname in New Zealand, and those people come from the same County in Ireland. By testing both groups, you can determine if they are related, and perhaps you will focus more research in this Irish county for paper records. In many cases, you may only need as few as two participants to apply Y-DNA testing to solving your genealogy brick walls or adding more information to your family history. Y-DNA Surname Projects attempt to test all lines, branches and variants of a particular surname to determine which are related. Surname Projects can start small with a subset of the surname and be expanded in phases. The mtDNA test is available for females and for the female ancestors of males. We all carry mtDNA inherited from our mothers. Anthropologists have determined that there exist approximately 20 daughters who are descended from a single 'mitochondrial Eve.' Family Tree DNA's mtDNA tests will determine from which daughter of Eve you descend. You can then use the Family Tree DNA database to find others whom you match Source: Facts & Genes from Family Tree DNA [http://www.familytreeDNA.com/facts_genes.asp] July 24, 2002 Volume 1, Issue 1; Copyright 2002, Family Tree DNA

    3. ============================================================ From: SOFTDSIGN@aol.com Date: 12/19/04 13:21:59 To: vlrhodes@centurytel.net Subject: Augustus F., James P., John H. & W.J. Campbell - Iredell Co. Confederates Hello Ms. Rhodes, I found you at GenForum. I may have written to you before regarding a different surname from the list below. I am a civil war collector and trader and also a writer. I am currently working on a book regarding the "Saltillo Boys". This is a company of voluteers in the Civil War from Iredell County, North Carolina. They were called the Saltillo Boys because some of their number had participated victoriously in the Battle of Bueno Vista during the Mexican War. Their actual designation was Co. C of the 4th Regiment of North Carolina Volunteers. All of Co. C was from Iredell County, N.C. There were four Campbells listed as a part of Co. C. Augustus F. Campbell was 18 when he was mustered in on 6/7/1861 as a private He was wounded on 5/31/1862 at the battle of Seven Pines in Virginia, from which he apparently recovered but was listed as died on 3/14/1863 at Fredericksburg, VA. James P. Campbell was 19 on 6/7/1861 when he also enlisted into Co. C as a private. All I know about him is that he was wounded on 9/17/1862 at Sharpsburg, MD. A different source indicates him to be in Co. G of the 4th NC which may be & probably is incorrect. John H. Campbell was 20 on 6/7/1861 when he was mustered in and was listed as wounded on 12/13/1862 at Fredericksburg from which he also apparently recovered because he was listed as "returned" on 9/30/1863. W.J. Campbell was 29 when he enlisted and was mustered in on 2/26/1862. He was detailed as a teamster from 8/13/62 to 8/31/64. He was listed as a POW on 4/3/1865 at Petersburg and confined at Hart's Island, NY. I am interested in additional information regarding these Campbells for use in my book. I am interested in any and all info that can be obtained - especially personal information. I am also keenly interested in how or if these men were kin to one another. Please e-mail me directly at softdsign@aol.com The 4th Regiment completed its organization in May 1862 at Camp Hill, near Garysburg, NC. It was ordered to Virginia, where the unit served in General Featherston's, G.B. Anderson's, Ramseur's and Cox's Brigade. It was active at Williamsburg, Seven Pines, and the Seven Days' Battles, then shared in the campaigns of the army from South Mountain to Cold Harbor. Later the 4th was involved in Early's Shenandoah Valley operations and the Appomattox Campaign. It lost 77 killed, 241 wounded, and 6 missing of the 678 engaged at Seven Pines, sustained 58 casualties during the Maryland Campaign and had 45 killed and 110 wounded at Chancellorsville. At Gettysburg, the unit lost thirty-one percent of the 196 engaged and 18 were disabled at Bristoe. The records show 8 officers and 101 men present on April 9, 1865. Its field officers were Colonels George B. Anderson, Bryan Grimes, Edwin A. Osborne, and James H. Wood; Lieutenant Colonels David M. Carter and John A. Young; and Majors Edward S. Marsh and Absalom K. Simonton. A complete list of soldiers, for whom I am asking for information, associated with Co C 4th NC Infantry include: William M. Adams Claudius S. Alexander Thomas A. 3. Hi, I've just gotten into this genealogy and found out that I'm related to John Bowles and Millie Pate. Emmaline Brown married Joseph G. Brown. He had a son named Lee. Lee only had one grandchild, my father, Ernest Gilmore Garrison. I am his eldest daughter. My father was born in Uvalde and grew up in the Brown home there. I am not aware of a DNA project, but would be interested in what that's about. I'm also looking for more info on Joseph G. Brown, if you might know anything. Notes for Jacob Sr Grimes: Subj: Grimes/Bonnett/lockhart. 02/12/2002 From: jeakins@phonewave.net (Donald B Jeakins) I have been researching the Grimes family from Vermilion County, Illinois, for information on a Branch of the family that came west in 1900. Had some of the names here, and a Book showed up, The History of Vermilion County, Illinois. 1979. by Beckwith and a Historical Atlas Map of Vermilion County, Illinois, 1875. One was 123 years old, and the other 127 years old. I found the family, of Ephraim P. Grimes in there and gave his children. I was in Rootsweb and put the information on a board, the next morning I got an email from a lady in Tilton, Ill. Her husbands mother was a lockhart, and her Aunt married a Grimes and then their child married a Butcher. so he is connected with the Grimes. I saw all the Grimes in on Ancestry Com but couldn't put them together with what I had from the Book. The book had a few names in the wrong place, and spelled wrong. No wonder. I am going to send you a couple pages on the ones you put in Ancestry com Entries: 33335. Look them over, and if they are the ones you are looking at, I will send the rest. Or if you already have these names, fine I can stop. The dates are not the same and a coupl! e names are different. But I think these are all related. These all connect with what I have out west. I send this message to let you know that a file will show up in your mail. I have to reconfigure my mail program first and if I do it right a attachment will say is attached, but when you bring the mail up the text will be right there just as this is. What it is doing now, it sends the text all jumbled up. Watch for my address, so you will know who it is from. My name is Donald B. Jeakins the address has my name. Thanks, have a safe week. A Lady in Tilton, Illinois sent me the whole list of the family from Danville, Vermilion County, Illinois. Her husband's mother was a Lockhart and her Aunt married a Grimes and then their child married a Butcher, so her husband is connected to the Grimes via his mother and father. Kathy has been researching the family for awhile. She has and sent to me Obit's, marriage cert's (copys) a record of names from an old family Bible. And a list of the family a mile long. As she has the majority of the information and has long searched, she exchanged with me her info for what I have. I would prefer for you to contact her first, I believe that would be best and I know she will exchange with you just as she has with me. And I can give you the information too, I believe that would be fine with her, and certainly would with me. I haven't sent her what I have as yet, I almost have it all compiled and will send to her very soon. If this information can help you, let either Kathy or myself know. Elisha P. (Early Settlers of Chas. Co., Bates). Rechecked and confirmed. NOTE: This is an abstract of the deed below. 5/2/1726: Deed from Samuel Tennison of SMC to Samuel Love of CC, carpenter, pt. of "Westwood Manor", formerly in SMC and now in CC; "Lumber Street", 100 ac. Samuel Tennison hereby warrants these presents against himself and his heirs against the heirs of Elizabeth Elliott. Deed ack. by Elizabeth, wife of Samuel Tennison. (CC Liber L, #2). Rechecked and confirmed. (I'm not completely sure who Elizabeth Elliott is, but she might be Elizabeth Davis, daughter of John Davis and Ann Reeder. Elizabeth Davis married William Elliott prior to 1731). Did one copy from the other and they're both mistaken? I don't know, but what's got me going is that Samuel Tennison did have a wife named Elizabeth (she was Elizabeth Bond, daughter of Zachariah Bond who died 1716 in St. Mary's Co. and his wife, Ann) and Samuel Chunn did not. Samuel Chunn's wife was Susanna Love. I do have an entry for Samuel Chunn and wife selling 100 ac. of "Lumber Street", but it's 9 years later. Is it possible that Samuel Chunn and Samuel Tennison both owned parts of this property? 8/12/1735: From Samuel Chunn of CC, planter to William Warder of CC, planter for 2000 lbs. tobacco "Lumber Street", 100 ac. Wit: Robert Yates, Thomas Stone. Ack. by Samuel Chunn and Susanna, his wife. (CC Land Rec.). Then I have this: 4/30/1723: Admin. accts. of Lucy Love, Chas. Co. Appraisers: Richard Edelen and George Brett. NOK: Susanna Love and Samuel Tennison (Skinner). 4/28/1724: Admin. accts. of Lucia Dobson (alias Lucia Love), Charles Co. Adm: Samuel Love. I have this woman as Lucia "Lucy" (nee Dobson), widow of Thomas Love of Charles County. She was the daughter of Samuel Dobson and Lucy Stratton. Lucy Stratton was the servant girl who had an illegitimate child by her master, Arthur Turner that created such an uproar in 1658. The NOK of Lucy Love are Susanna Love and Samuel Tennison. I am assuming that Susanna Love is the same girl who married Samuel Chunn January 20, 1730/31 at Trinity Episcopal and that she was the daughter of Thomas Love and Lucy Dobson. I am also assuming that Samuel Tennison must have been married to a daughter of Thomas Love and Lucy Dobson at this point in time.
