Dear List, I am looking for the marriage of Emily Allen to ?? Bowles, she was married to a Bowles, She had two children Clara aged 9 in the 1891 census born in Poplar London William aged 7 in the 1891 census born West Ham. London They were all at her parents the day of the census at 112 Bridge Road Grays Thurrock ESSEX. her parents were Robert Allen father Jane Allen mother. Emily Bowles was drowned on the 14th Oct. 1898 when the ship Moyhan was wrecked off the Cornwall Coast, she was a stewardess on board that ship, I think her husband may have been a Captain of a ship or worked on a ship at some time as he was never in any of the census's with their family, her sister was Elizabeth Morgan (nee Allen) who was alway with her parents with her son George at census time so think he was at sea also, as I have been told there was a Ship's Captain in the family but I don't know who he was. After Emily was drowned her children were with Elizabeth Morgan her sister in the 1901 census, still no husbands. Would love to hear from any lister who has any connection with Emily or can perhaps help in some way, very willing to exchange info also. Regards Val Mably Christchurch New Zealand. herval@xtra.co.nz

Hi Val, I am working on my gggrandfather Rich'd Bowles B;1818 and his Wife Diana nee Smith b :1808 and their sons William b:1845 and George b:.1852. They were all born in england except the son William was born in France . The couple married in Paris in 1843. and moved back to England after the birth of William. At any rate I will keep an eye out for your people since we are researching the same timeframe and same childrens names. Can you do the same for me? Do you have an estimate of Emily's birthdate? Sincerely, Randi Bowles-Meentzen herval <herval@xtra.co.nz> wrote:Dear List, I am looking for the marriage of Emily Allen to ??
Does anyone know anything about the genealogy of the author Emily Bowles of England in the mid-1800's who wrote such books as "The History of England", "Irish Diamonds" and "A Sister's Story"? She was an active member of the Oxford Movement in England which was a move from the Church of England back towards Catholic doctrine which was a very brave position to take in the mid-1800's. I just obtained an 1865 copy of Irish Diamonds, have found it fascinating reading and would like to know if she is connected to any of "our" Bowles in any way. As a Catholic Sister herself later its unlikely she had descendants but I saw one reference to her coming from a large family. Tom LaPorte

PHILLIPS, chairman; other magistrates present--Thomas F. KNIPE, Esq., and John ROGERS, Esq. The business before the Court to-day was very limited being only two cases of summary ejectment of two tenants on the property of Sir St. George GORME, Bart., brought by John ROGERS, Esq., J.P., agent for weekly holdings situate in Weaver-row, Belturbet, in both of which decrees for possession were given. Henry M'CABE v. John TUITE & Co. The summons to-day was against Mr. John TUITE and Mr. William C. TUITE, trading as John TUITE & Co., for 16s, car hire due to the complainant, and earned in the year 1862. Mr. S. N. KNIPE, solicitor, appeared for the defendants, and applied for a postponement in consequence of Mr. John TUITE having left for England on that morning on business. He stated prior to the summons being served that he had his arrangements made to leave home. Mr. M'LEOD objected to the adjournment, and recapitulation of former statements were made by him. After some consultation the Bench allowed the case to stand until next Court day, which, on account of the Assizes will not be held till Saturday, 2nd August. The Court then adjourned. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ASSIZES INTELLIGENCE CO. LEITRIM Carrick on Shannon, July 18 CROWN COURT (Before Baron HUGHES) The Queen v. O'NEILL and Another In this case the prisoners, consisting of the two O'NEILLs and another of the name of PINN, were charged with breaking into the house of Michael O'NEILL, and administering an oath to him that he would give up a certain holding of land, from which the father of the prisoners, one Charles O'NEILL, had been recently evicted, and with an assault upon the prosecutor, by which his life was endangered. From the evidence of the prosecutor and his wife, it appeared that a party of six or eight persons on the night of the 29th of April last, about 10 or 11 o'clock, broke into his house, and knocked down and beat the old man; he seized a gun, but it did not go off when he attempted to pull the trigger. He was unable to identify any of them. Catherine O'NEILL, wife of the prosecutor, stated that when interrogated they said they were the police; she identified the three prisoners as being of the party. The prosecutors admitted that they knew the traversers from their childhood, and gave a good character of them. The servant boy in the prosecutor's house swore he knew them intimately, but could not identify them on the occasion. The servant girl of the house had previously known them, but could not identify them. Mr. MALLEY addressed the jury for the prisoners, and relied upon the want of identification of the persecutors. Witnesses were examined who proved that the prisoners were at home on the night in question. The jury acquitted the prisoners. Messrs. WHITE and HARKAN prosecuted. Messrs. CONCANNON and MALLEY defended the prisoners. =============================================================================================== CO. He had been sick for some weeks and yesterday the attending physician informed him that he had but a few moments to live. He desired to be interred in his native land, and as the shipment of a body out of Mexico is attended with great delay and expense, he was tenderly carried across the bridge while yet living, only to die as he touched American soil. The body was shipped to his home in Uvalde.

The website to join the Bowles DNA Project is located at http://www.familytreedna.com/surname_join.asp?code=W26816&special=true The cost of the kit depends on which one you select. The kits are listed at the bottom of the webpage on the form to order. I recommend the 25 marker test. I'll be happy to try to answer any questions you might have. Charlie Hartley Bowles DNA Project Administrator >I have been gone for a while. I have been gone for a while. How do you get a DNA testing kit and how much does it cost? I have talked with a male Bowles cousin from Henry County, Virginia and he said he would take the test. He is tied to one of the many Benjamin Bowles' we are trying to connect together. Anne in VA
For Bill and others who are asking similar question: The Y-DNA test is only valid for tracing male ancestors of the Bowles line. Since Bill's Bowles ancestor is female (Sarah Bowles) this test will not help him with his Bowles ancestors. Bill, If Sarah Bowles had a brother, and you can trace male Bowles descendents from that brother, then one of them could test and it might help you with her ancestors. There is also a test that follows the maternal line, but it will not help you unless Sarah is in your direct maternal line which goes this way: your mother to your mother's mother to your mother's mother's mother, etc. Even if this is true for you, then such a test would only point to Sarah's mother, not her father. Does this help? Charlie >Hello, >I'm a male. My ggg grandmother was Sarah Bowles, b: Abt 1775, m: >John Hicks, b: Abt 1754. > My Hicks line went thru Va., Ohio, Ks., and then Ok. > Would this test give me any idea of who my Sarah Bowles parent's >were? If so, I would be willing to provide a sample. How much would >it cost and where do I get the Kit? >Yours, >Bill Craig >
Using the census records indexes for Henry County VA, I find the following Bowles families from 1820-1850: 1820 Federal Census: Virginia, Henry County, page 28 Alexander Bowles - 00001-0 1830 Federal Census: Virginia, Henry County, page 185 Alexander H. Since he was born about 1819, he should be on someone's list for '20, '30, and '40; but Alexander does not show a male the right age in those years. Any ideas on who Joseph's parents might be?
