One of my ancestors is listed on the 1881 census as owning a sock factory employing 15 people. His home address is given as Leicester Road in Oadby, so I am assuming the sock factory would also be in Oadby. Similarly a Kelly's Trade Directory from around this time lists 'John Bowles (fancy & sock)' under Hosiery & Sock Manufacturers in Oadby but gives no address for the factory. Likewise another ancestor is shown in the same Kelly's Trade Directory as being the landlord of the 'Wheel Inn' public house. The 1881 census lists this as being on Main Street in Oadby. The full text from Kelly's Directory reads "Hill, Zacharia, Butcher & BHS, Wheel " under Publicans. Any help in locating where either of these premises were would be much appreciated. Does the local Library in Oadby have any photo's of Oadby around 1881? Regards Linda ===================================================================== Match: Bowles Source: LEICESTERSHIRE-PLUS-L@rootsweb.com From: Halfajigsaw@aol.com Subject: Re: Sock Factory & Wheel Pub in Oadby Linda, Can't help you with a sock factory - tho there was a children's clothing factory on the same side of the road as The Wheel, but closer to Oadby town recently (think it's now closed). The Wheel is still there - on what is now Leicester Road - been chucked out of there several times when younger for minor misdemeanours!! The link below should take you to a pic and info. http://www.pubutopia.com/pubs/L/Leicester/Oadby/The%20Wheel%20Inn/index.html Maggie P.S. Not sure about pics in library of old Oadby - I have seen some postcards of old Oadby in one of the photoshops, and think there might be at least one local history book that may be of interest - if I come across it will let you know. John Bowles, same sock employer is at 28 London Road (North side), where Black Dog Inn is number 25. Not sure exactly where London Road changes into Leicester Road - but maybe it's the same place they were at 10 years later except with a different address?? Can send image if you like. The Gannaway story and other family members are in Vol. I of Amherst County Heritage. Martha Emma Gannaway, sister to Maurice and now deceased, wrote fondly of her family life at Sandidges. Her story is published in Vol. II of the above mentioned book. Lots of Cunninghams in Vol. I of above book but a quick scan did not connect with any of your mentioned names. Robert Tait is mentioned briefly in Vol. I of above book as selling Spring Garden Estate in September 1921. William Coleman mentioned briefly as son of Lindsey and other siblings in same book. 1. Bowles: more PML items
    2. Linne Gravestock
    3. Dear Bowles Listers, I've been out on Scammon's Lagoon, enjoying the whales for the last ten days. It's at about the midpoint of Baja California where there's no Internet access. Whales almost as thick as sparrows on the ground, so if you get a chance to see them---go. But know that to get there, it's several days of a long, long bus ride. I'm going to start culling through the PML again for the various items that I post to the Bowles list. Going to send about ten items a day again until we get back to a normal number of two or three. So newcomers, the ten a day that I'll be posting is not our usual number of items that you'll usually see. Your exhausted but happy bus rider, Linne

    1. Name change
    2. Leathel Bowles
    3. I have found this several times where the wife changes her name after she names a daughter after herself. In this case Mary changed her name to Elizabeth after her daughter Mary was born. Anybody know the reason? Could John and Ann be John and Sarah Ann Knight? Leathel, PS. This a good indication husband had died. And Mary Elizabeth was living in Hanover in 1768.Want to know where Mary Elizabeth was living in Hanover Co? Goochland Co, Marriage: June 20, 1744 Benjamin BOWLES to Mary WEBBER; sec. Philip Webber; witn. H. Wood November 27, 1768 John BOWLES of Hanover, to Mary REDFORD, orphan of Wm. Redford, deceased, sec. John Cannon. Elizabeth BOWLES certifies that her son John, was 21 last May ( John born May,1747, Benjamin & Elizabeth Bowles )

    2. Dear Leathel or anyone who can help fill the blanks. I am a descendant of Ruth BOWLES. Ruth married Benjamin THACKER around 1757 (or earlier). I believe they were married in Goochland Co. VA. Would anyone have any information that they would care to share? Thanks in advance, Donna Hines Leathel Bowles <LEATHEL@worldnet.att.net> wrote: We still have John and Ann as a maybe father of Elijah Bowles.I have added another possibable, Benjamin Bowles that had land in Henrico Co. 3. Thomas Phillip Bowles family came to Barren Co, KY before Elijah Bowles came to Barren Co. Thomas Phillip was born 1748 and Elijah born 1751. They could be brothers. Thomas Phillip died in Hanover Co 1795, Sarah left Hanover Co about 1802 with the family. What I have a problem with is this Goochland Co,Va marriage record and the first three or four children listed as Thomas and Sarah children? Are they Elijah's children by a first marriage? These children were in the company of Sarah during their stay in Barren Co. 2. Leathel Bowles
    3. For John Bowles b.1726, I don't have a lot other than date of birth that could make him the father of Elijah Bowles b.1751. I have some information that might be on him in different states. There was a Charles Bowles in Woodford Co, Ky in 1810 census that probable is his son and could be this Charles Vowles: MILITARY WARRANTS TO KY CHARLES VOWLES 26661/3 161 3YRS LIEUTENANT STATE LINE 3-7-1783 Benjamin Bowles that married Mary Webber 1744 in Goochland Co. I believe is the father of Benjamin Bowles who died in NC 1780 leaving land in KY to brothers John, Thomas. Thomas being Thomas Phillip Bowles who married Sarah Bacon. Thomas Phillip lived and died in Hanover Co. There is some information on this family that is not correct that makes Benjamin and Mary possible parents of Elijah b.1751.I'll do the incorrect information next. 1. Henry Bowles
    2. Leathel Bowles
    3. This Henry Bowles (Vowles) is a brother to Thomas Bowles of Chesterfield Co, VA. Henry had 10 whites living with him in 1783. Between Henry,Thomas and Zachariel there were over 20 Bowles that went someplace after 1783, VA,KY,NC, ECT. You will notice I left Charles, Walter, and Zachariel on the list below. Boyles Co, Ky was named after one of these Bowles. Elijah b. 1751 could be his son, I don't think so? His brother, maybe? Last week it was Henry Towles, this week Henry Vowles and Henry Boyles.
