At the top of each section is the fathers name e.g. Robert Webb and his wife Mary and then the children are listed beneath the parents. In some cases, where the maiden name of the wife is known, then it would be Mary born Smith for example. The first few in the register did not record the maiden name of the mother. Since there are no entry numbers I have used the page numbers instead. The handwriting is fairly good in this register, although sometimes the spelling is suspect! There is no mention of the name of the minister, but by looking at some of the marriage certificates I have identified the handwriting as being that of Rev Alexander Hay. 3. I am researching into early settlers, some of you will have already made contact with me... I am especially interested in some BOWLES graves up there.. some maybe unmarked meaning no headstone, but the surname is on the Plans I have from first recorded burial in 1866 not a Bowles! I have met a local in Carterton who is related, and I know he would like to know more on his ancestors, has no computer, so have offered my assistance.. Two Bowles on Carterton War Memorial.. WW1 are related to him.. Percival McLaren Bowles. son of George and Mary Ann Bowles. Carterton. Jesse Bowles same family.. Person I know in Carterton has the names of Watkins in his family as well as Bowles and Gordon. If this is a guide for anyone... I will check the plans and see what dates are next to the names...as only surnames are on the plans... I am also researching the cemetery....very interesting too! Many thanks Adele Sec. 3. Yes, Randi, Black Bart was quite a character, all right! Perhaps the moral of his story is that if you're going to be a robber/poet, make sure that there are no tell-tale laundry marks in your clothing. I don't know if any of our current members are in Black Bart's family tree; we haven't discussed him in quite a while. But if you go to this URL, you can search every year to read what we've said about him. And I know that someone has spoken up as being related to him, but they may not be in our group at the moment. Check it out at: http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl When that comes up, type in Bowles-L in the box. Then you can go through each year in turn searching for Black Bart. Yours, Linne >I was just reading an article on the infamous Black Bart aka Charles >Boles. Interesting character. Any listers in his tree? R.L. >Bowles-Meentzen

    3. ===================================================================== Match: Bowles Source: PALAWREN-L@rootsweb.com From: "Janet" <watsonje@comcast.net> Subject: Watsons from Nesahnnock I thought some of you might like this information about the Watson brothers who were original settlars in Neshannock in the early 1800's. If anyone has connections or additional information let me know. I am descended from a brother of William and Lot, but my primary interest in genealogy is researching this family. Descendents of William Watson William Watson (James Riddle) Notes on William Watson: "Lot and William Watson, brothers from Centre County, settled in this (Neshannock) township about 1806-1808 on lots 1854 and 1855. William built a large stone house about 1810-1812, and Lot put up a good brick residence some years later upon his farm adjoining on the south. For some years after their arrival they lived in log cabins. They were both out in the War of 1812. Both the Watsons raised large and respectable families." [i] William married a sister of Alexander Johnston, husband of his sister Margaret.[ii] Children of William Watson and (unknown) Johnston are[iii]: Nancy (Piles) Catherine Watson Margaret Watson Mary Watson Johnston Watson More about Johnston Watson: "Johnston Watson, son of William Watson, started a pottery on his farm near the United Presbyterian Church about 1825, before his marriage."[iv] James Watson More about James Watson: James Watson was the schoolteacher in Neshannock Township in 1826.[v] Lot Watson More about Lot Watson: "Lot Watson, son of William, held a state appointment on the Philadelphia and Columbia Railway in 1856." William Watson Descendents of Lot Watson Lot Watson (James Riddle) was born about 1786. He died in 1863 at the age of 77. He married (1) Margaret Cunningham, of Neshannock Township and following her death married (2) Margaret Houston, daughter of Colonel Houston, an officer in the Revolutionary War.[ix] Notes for Lot Watson: He "was educated in the common schools of Penn Valley and in 1805 settled on the farm, now owned by his son (Hiram), which he cleared and put in a high state of cultivation. The farm contains 157 acres.it is situated about 3 miles north of New Castle. (Lot) fought in the War of 1812. He was a Whig in his politics, and served the township of which he was a citizen as a school director, auditor, assessor, as well as several minor capacities. In his religious leanings he was a United Presbyterian."[x] From a 1863 Obituary for Lot Watson: "Died at his residence in New Castle, on the 1st inst., Lot Watson, Sen., in the 77th year of his age. Mr. Watson was one of the early settlers of this county, having removed from Center County to Neshannock Township in the year 1804. He continued to occupy the farm on which he first settled, down to last spring, when he removed to New Castle. Among his neighbors he was always esteemed for his integrity, and the kindness and sympathy manifested by him to the sick or afflicted. He always had the confidence of the people, and had a prominent position in the township. At an early age he became connected with the A.R. Presbyterian Church, and down to the time of decease, was a consistent lover of Jesus; his joy in health, and his stay and support in the hour of sickness and death. A large number of descendents and many friends mourned his loss, but not without hope."[xi] Children of Lot Watson and Margaret Cunningham are[xii]: James Watson Isabel Watson William Watson Samuel Watson Children of Lot Watson and Margaret Houston are: Hiram Watson Harriet Watson (Fisher) Nancy Watson Dixon Watson John Watson Margaret Watson (McCreary) Lot Watson Thomas Watson Sarah Watson (Garrett) Julia Watson (Boyd) Elizabeth Watson (Love) Third Generation Hiram Watson (Lot, James Riddle) born October 13, 1822. Married in 1850 to Rebecca Gibson. Notes on Hiram Watson: Hiram Watson attended school and worked on the farm till he was twenty-eight years old, and then left home, but still followed the same occupation of farming. In 1863, he returned to the paternal estate, which he purchased at that time, and has since been very successfully engaged in agricultural pursuits. He is a Republican in his politics, and has held the offices of school director, assessor, supervisor, and took the census of the town in 1880. The children of Hiram Watson and Rebecca Gibson are[xiii]: Harriet Jenevra Watson, married (1) Oscar Hazen (2) James Martin Margaret Watson, married Frank Maitland of Youngstown, Ohio William A. Here was Elaine's original posting that got picked up by the PML: ===================================================================== Match: Bowles Source: MAHAMPDE-L@rootsweb.com From: "Elaine Strople" <estrople@charter.net> Subject: Re: [MAHAMPDEN] Longmeadow Land Grant Map of 1645 Dear Sandy, Does your book contain any information about the property purchased by Henry Leland Bowles (Bolles) on Longmeadow Street? The property was a small farm and the main house fronted Longmeadow Street. It was purchased around the turn of the century. Thank you. Elaine Strople ================================================= When I wrote to her to invite her to the Bowles list, she replied: ================================================= Thank you, Linne for your reply. I do have information on this line of the Bolles/Bowles family. Henry Leland Bowles was the brother of my husband's grandmother. They are listed in the book of descendants of Joseph Bolles of Wells, Maine. We do belong to the Bolles Association group, though we are not what you would call "active" members. Uncle Henry changed the spelling of his name to the more easily recognizable and pronounceable Bowles as he began to become more active in business affairs and the family followed suit. My genealogy research has slowed down in the past several years due to health concerns and family obligations, but I'm trying to pick up speed once again. I'd like to find out more about the family background of my husband's grandfather, Albert Hammat(t), who married Henry's sister Angie Scofield Bowles. He was a minister in Newton, Mass. and they later moved to Longmeadow to care for Angie and Henry's mother on the Longmeadow property and ran a small farm there. Henry was quite successful by this time, having developed a small chain of lunchrooms in the Springfield area, dabbled in local politics and served a term in the US Congress. He also had a lovely summer home in Lake Sunapee, New Hampshire where he entertained many of the dignitaries of the day. He was married to Edna Howard. She outlived him by fifty years!--passing away in her 90's in 1982. They had no children, but were extremely kind and generous to their nieces and nephews. The bulk of Aunt Edna's estate was given to charity. The are interred at a mausoleum in Springfield. I believe it is in a place called Hillcrest Cemetery. The mausoleum has beautiful Tiffany windows. I was on several surname lists while I was more active. I will give it some thought and get back to you. Please share my response with the list. Perhaps they would be interested--perhaps they may know something more about the Hammat clan. I'd be interested to know if any belong to the Bolles Association and are planning to attend the reunion in mid-October. My husband's Strople side has strong ties to the fishing industry in Nova Scotia and Massachusetts and I have prevailed upon him to clear his calendar for this event. It has been a while since we've been back to Longmeadow and this is a good reason to go! Thanks for writing! Elaine Strople

When she left Salida the thermometer marked 38 and a few days before when taking an outing with some friends she encountered a snow storm. Will Karsell, Sam Murdock, John Bowles and P. B. Smith, the Bloomington colony, are all getting along nicely and are much pleased with their work.
