===================================================================== Match: Bowles Source: INDIANA-L@rootsweb.com From: Lora1957@aol.com Subject: McMaman, Morris, Bowles, This book has no cover, and no index, and no author. I bought it on Ebay; it just has the insides, but it is full of Indiana biographies. I am not researching this family, just thought I would share. I do not know anymore about these families or these surnames. NOTE: I donÄôt know if there is any additional mention of this family in the book, it has no index. I do not want to sell this book. I am typing the biographies from it. Typed by Lora Radiches Morris WILLIAM MCMANAMAN Surnames mentioned in this biography of Morris William McManman are: McMaman, Morris, Bowles, Is a native of Dearborn County, where he has played a varied role of usefulness as a lawyer, public official and a leader to whom the community naturally turns for assistance and cooperation. Mr. McManaman was born in Dearborn County in 1881, son of James and Mary (Morris) McManaman, and a grandson of William McManaman, a native of Pennsylvania, who came to Dearborn County, Indiana, early in the last century. Both grandfather and father were farmers. Mary Morris was a great-great-granddaughter of the distinguished Pennsylvanian, Robert Morris, the financier of the American Revolution. Morris W. McManaman was the only son In a family of five children. Beyond the advantages of the common schools he had to depend on his own exertions and labors to qualify for the law. As a young man he taught school and farmed, in the meantime attended the University of Indiana, and in 1905 took his law degree at the Indianapolis Law School. For a quarter of a century he has been one of the best qualified attorneys of the Dearborn County bar. In connection with his law practice he has for the past seven years performed the duties of county clerk, being first elected to that office in 1922, and in 1926 was reelected. Mr. McManaman married Miss Bessie Bowles, a native of Ohio, daughter of Dr. Thomas Bowles. The English family of Bowles settled in Ohio about 1800. Mr. and Mrs. McManaman have one son, James Thomas, attending school at Lawrenceburg. Mr. McManaman is a member of the Masonic fraternity and for seven years was an elder in the local Presbyterian Church. He was the second president and is now secretary of the Kiwanis Club. During the World war Mr. McManaman neglected his professional work in order to be free at all times to give his service to the Government. He was active in the Liberty Loan drives, served as a member of the draft board, and was otherwise engaged in the war program, of 1917-18.

I need a history lesson. I am baffled as to why these British citizens were in South Africa. Did they receive land grants or was it a penal colony etc. I have a gggrandfather Richard Bowles who was in Paris at the British Embassy for his marriage in 1843 and returned for the birth of his oldest son in 1848. This also baffled me as to why a British citizen would be there. Another researcher told me that at the time it was a fashionable fad for people with some money to do. Her ancestors were on there way to Paris for the birth of there eldest child and had visited Italy for a vacation previously. They were delayed in Italy and the entire family was in an uproar thinking that the child would be registered in Italy instead of France. Fortunately for all involved the mother made it to Paris in time and no ones sensibilities were insulted! So there must be a story behind the British in South Africa. At the top of each section is the fathers name e.g. Robert Webb and his wife Mary and then the children are listed beneath the parents. In some cases, where the maiden name of the wife is known, then it would be Mary born Smith for example. The first few in the register did not record the maiden name of the mother. Since there are no entry numbers I have used the page numbers instead. The handwriting is fairly good in this register, although sometimes the spelling is suspect! There is no mention of the name of the minister, but by looking at some of the marriage certificates I have identified the handwriting as being that of Rev Alexander Hay.
