    3. Hi Dale, been in Barren Co for a couple days.I'm going to send this to you and the list, maybe someone can add to it.Some of this information I have, some is information from other reseachers that they have sent me or the list.I'll start with Thomas Bowles that died in Henrico Co.He wrote his will Nov.19,1783 and died soon after. He list his children as: Thomas, Issac(Jesse), Sarah, Resalinda, Christiana, and Mary. Mary married John Winn Jr. Some of their children moved to Barren Co,Ky. Isaac Bowles married Mary Bowles daughter of William Bowles a brother to Thomas Bowles, who died in 1783, and moved to KY ( I have no record of this). Christiana married Hezekial Winn. The son Thomas Bowles died before 1817 ( My guess 1800), so he is not your Thomas Bowles born 1761 and died 1839. Thomas born 1761 left a will naming his children (I don't have the will). Some of his children moved to Barren Co. IF I am correct with my guess the Thomas Bowles who died in 1800 is the son of Thomas Bowles d.1783. Thomas d.1800 had a child Emily who married Asa Gardener and moved to Barren Co. So far we have: 1.The grandchildren of Thomas Bowles who died 1783 moving to Barren Co. 2. Thomas Bowles born 1761 children moving to Barren Co. ( My guess is Thomas is a son of Thomas Bowles a son of William and Deborah Tinsley?) 3. Thomas Bowles child Emily moving to Barren Co. Next we have Thomas Bowles of Chesterfield Co, Va whose son Thomas b.1775 moved to Cumberland Co. Then some of Thomas b.1775 children moved into Barren Co. Then we have Thomas Phillip Bowles family moving to Barren Co after his death. Dale, I hope this helps. Everyone feel free to correct anything that they disagree with. My problem is I don't know how many or which ones Elijah Bowles b.1761 is related to? Leathel,

    3. I can't remember if I told you this but I wrote to John J, Boles and received this infro. This was sent to me in 1995. You sent me the same thing a couple of months ago which was in the news paper back in 1996. He says in my letter There were two Bowles in Ky your line, Thomas Sr, Thomas Jr and My line Thomas of Becton area and yours of the slick rock area. He says My Thomas was probably a cousin of your Thomas Sr. He was going to send me a copy of inez Bowles book but he never did. He said in his letter something was on page 48 or 58.. As I go through all of this I have to go back and look at everything again as i had no idea what it was. If I can find out who Issac Bowles father was He was Thomas 1761s brother. Also I feel Valintine and Willam Is in there somewhere. I feel Nathaniel V. V is for Valentine Debroah Tenseley as we know was Thomas 1761 mother as one of Thomas 1761 sons was named Peter Tensley. If you would like a copy of the letter let me know. Dale Bowles

    2. Randi Meetzen
    3. Ken, Thank you again. I have to say that the listers involved in the Huron community are absolutely the most helpful of any I have met!!! I took off with your idea and researched the Thorpe next Norwich area and came up with some terrific information. As you may know, besides being farmers, my Bowles family ran a tavern by the railroad tracks on the property that they owned in New London. I do not yet Know the name of it. I beleive that I found my Richard in 1841 in the village of Great Yarmouth, Norwich, along with other family members who of all things were tavern keepers. As I "traveled through time" I found who is perhaps his father, another Wm. Bowles owning several taverns including, The Britannia Beerhouse in 1819, The Coach and Horses in 1830-1835 and the Sawyers Arms in 1839. I understand that it was destred by fire in 1854. Richard and Diana Bowles arrived in New London between 1854 and 1860. It made sense to me that perhaps Diana returned to an area where she ha! d family or fond memories or perhaps owned some property. I am now researching this area for records and have joined the Norwich mailing list on rootsweb in hopes of finding more If anyone is interested in studying up on old pubs and taverns I found a terrific site . It is www.norfolkpubs.co.uk . Interesting, cool pictures and educational. Thank you again for your help. I am coming to New London for the 4th of July to meet a sister who grew up there. She was adopted at birth and I accidentally stumbled across her records of birth in my genealogy research. Now that is a find! I am looking forward to my visit to your county. Best Regards, R.L.Bowles-Meentzen Kwsroots@aol.com wrote:For Randi Bowles-Meetzen. Hi Randi, I believe I have found the death date for the Diana Bowles listed in the England Census of 1881 as a widow, age 72, born in Gibralter, and living on Bishop Bridge Rd., Thorpe next Norwich in the county of Norfolk, England. The date is March, 1883. It can be found on the web site for FreeBMD (births, marriages, deaths). The site is: freebmd.rootsweb.com. There are five entries for Diana Bowles. Besides the death date mentioned, there is a birth date given which appears to relate to the birth of your Diana Bowles' son George Bowles in Shardlow, Mar 1852. (According to your posting of 3 Jan 2005 to Ancestry.com's message board, subject: Bowles in Shardlow 1850's.) If you're not familiar with FreeBMD, the first page of the web site states that it is a project to transcribe the Civil Registration index of births. marriages, and deaths for England and Wales, and covers index records for the period 1837-1983. (When filling out the search criteria for Diana Bowles I filled in "All Types" for the different records, "All Districts," and "All Counties." Here are the five records for Diana Bowles. Read Name, Age (when given), District, Volume nr., and Page nr.: 1.Births Mar 1852 Diana Bowles, Shardlow, 7b, 321. "The district Shardlow spans the boundaries of the counties of Derbyshire, Leicestershire, and Nottinghamshire..." (Appears to relate to the birth of George Bowles in 1852.) 2. Deaths Mar `1883 Diana Bowles, age 74, Norwich, 4b, 88. "The district Norwich can be found in the county of Norfolk..." (Seemingly relates to the Diana Bowles who appeared in the 1881 England Census at age 72, living in Thorpe, next Norwich, Norfolk, England. May or may not be the same as Diana (Smith) Bowles) 3. Births Jun 1874 Diana Maria Bowles, Norwich, 4b, 117. "The district Norwich is in the county of Norfolk..." 4. Marriages Mar 1897 Diana Maria Bowles, Norwich, 4b, 260. "The district Norwich is in the county of Norfolk..." (Presumably the same Diana Bowles as in 3. above.) 5. Deaths Sep 1883 Diana Bowles, age 1, Fulham, 1a, 140. "The district Fuham spans the boundaries of Greater London, London and Middlesex..." (Appears not to relate to the above listings) I also made a quick search of the freeBMD web site for listings of Richard Bowles. There were many of them, but none I could pin down as being your Richard Bowles. Maybe you will have better luck. (Unless he died in the U.S.) Regards, Ken Shute (kwsroots@aol.com) ==== OHHURON Mailing List ==== Enjoy your stay in Huron County, OH If you feel you must unsubscribe from the list mode send the word 'unsubscribe' to OHHURON-L-request@rootsweb.com

    1. John Bowles Land
    2. Leathel Bowles
    3. John Bowles who died in 1664 in Elizabeth City Co, Va patented 350 ac land in Norfolk Co, Va in 1625. He granted this land to his son in law Richard Jones in 1655. Richard Jones then assigned this land to Richard Bowles and John Waite ( Richard Bowles his son, John Waite, son of his wife Anne). In John's Will 1664 he willed everything to his son John. His son John married Margey Battin in Charles Co, Md and made will 1675 (the patent was renewed October 12, 1675). That means a transfer from John Bowles to John Bowles. This John Bowles was married to Mary Jane Scott. John and Jane son John was born 1686 not old enough for the land to be renewed to him when his father died in 1695. This land then went back to Henry Bowles son of John Bowles who died 1664.Henry gave half this land to his half brother John Waite, the other half to sons John and Thomas. Leathel, On February 15, 1663/4 John Bowles was granted 350 acres on the Western Branch of Elizabeth River adjoining Capt. William Tucker; this land had been granted to Richard Jones October 18, 1655 and by him assigned to Richard Poole and John Waite, and then assigned to John Bowles; the patent was renewed October 12, 1675 (Nugent, page 497; page 332 shows the original grant to Richard Jones).(Norfolk Co, VA) That JOHN BOWLES was the original owner of THOMAS BOWLES land is proved by a deed of WILLIAM POWELL, Sept.25, 1752, Who bought from John Smith the home plantation left by THOMAS BOWLES to John Smith,1718; the 1752 deed states that the land was part of a patent to JOHN BOWLES in 1625 which was renewed in 1655 (D. B. 15, p. 155). (Norfolk Co, VA)

Well it appears that I was premature. As sometimes happens, the first round of testing for some of you did not yield a clear reading on at least one marker. When this happens they re-test that batch which means that you will have to wait a bit longer for the results to arrive. When this happens there is no cause for alarm. As I said, they will re-test that batch which will probably turn out okay. If not, remember that you provided two samples so if the first sample does not yield results then they will test the second sample. And if the worst should happen, then they will send you a new kit without charge. Remember that we want them to be completely accurate, so sometimes we just have to be patient. 3. ===================================================================== Match: Bowles Source: KYJACKSO-L@rootsweb.com From: "Jess Wilson" <jswlsn@prtcnet.org> Subject: TO CATCH A STAR. TO CATCH A STAR. By Jess Wilson Emily Muncy was a little girl when she came from Virginia to Kentucky in the late fall of 1833. Emily, then nine years old, was an orphan. She traveled with a family that had "adopted" her. Some think that Muncy was the name of her adopted family and that she was not a Muncy. However, as Emily is a name that appears in other Muncy families, I am inclined to believe that she was a Muncy. As she grew into a remarkable woman and I am also apart Muncy, I like to think of Emily as a cousin of some degree. Emily Muncy was about 19 or 20 years old when she married Anderson Bowles. Their descendants are now legion. Emily appears to have been a very strong woman of slight build. Her grandson, Green Flannery told me that his grandmother once rode a horse, sidesaddle, from Abram's Store at Big Hill to where Ray Wilson lived on Sturgeon Creek, carrying a turning- plow in her lap. She served as a midwife in the area where she lived "near the Sand Flats at the mouth of Grassy where the Chickasaw plums and the chinquapins grew." I don't know how near but I hope it was near enough for me to use this quote from her great grandson, Lloyd Bowles of Florence, Kentucky. During his lifetime, Carter Mahaffey of Green Hall told me "My grandmother Bowles was Emily Muncy. She came to Kentucky in a wagon when she was a little girl. They were camping by their wagon the night the stars fell." The night of November 13, 1833, when there was a brilliant shower of meteorites, must have been a fearful night for timid or superstitious souls. John Gilbert and Henry Sizemore were hunting on Rock House Creek (now Leslie County) that night. Although they were men that probably were not afraid of even the Devil himself, nevertheless, they placed their powder horns some distance from where they slept for fear the fire from Heaven would cause them to explode. Many feared that it was "The End of Time." Someone told me a beautiful story about that night at the wagon camp on the road from Virginia to Kentucky. How often does it happen that we see in the action of a child the quality of the adult they will become?. It should have been a revelation to the family that night that the little girl that traveled with them would grow into the brave and fearless woman she became. Emily was running around the camp, holding out her little apron, trying to catch a star. I have a picture of her that my half first cousin, once removed, Howard Wilson, loaned me. She may not have caught a star in her apron but in the picture you can see that she had stars in her eyes. Sitting on a shelf in this room is a small, cheap cream pitcher. Inside the pitcher is a note which reads: "My great, grandmother, Emily Muncy Bowles, was a famous midwife (granny woman). This pitcher was payment from a very poor woman she delivered of a baby one cold winter night. She gave the pitcher to my mother, Pearl Mahaffey Wilson-Baker when she was born April 1900 . Loaned to Jess Wilson, to be returned to Howard Wilson." Note by Jess: Pearl was a niece of Carter McHaffey. Her first marriage was to my half first cousin, Clifton Wilson. Her second marriage was to Bill Baker. ================================ -- Always looking for Boles/Bowles, Jeffries, Adair and Trott
