I thought maybe the history of St Thomas might help Bob determine something from the tax lists. He most likely knows where St Thomas is. By the way, St Thomas is quite a ways from Cox's Creek. Betty History of St. Thomas Church, Bardstown, Kentucky (Founded 1812) Early Catholic pioneers, Edward Howard and his son Thomas, had homesteaded 400 acres along the Beech Fork River and designated it as " Poplar Neck". For nearly twenty five years, they welcomed circuit riding priests to celebrate mass in their home. in 1810 Benedict Joseph Flaget, the first bishop of the west, recieved the property as a bequest From Thomas Howard and named St. Thomas in honor of the donor's patron. In 1812 a log cabin was constructed to serve flaget's home as a seminary. 4 years later, the brick church was constructed for the purpose of a parish church and seminary chapel. This church stands as the oldest of it's kind in the United States, west of the Allegheny Mountains. Two centuries ago pioneer Catholics came to Kentucky and planted the seed of faith. The unconquerable faith of Edward Howard and the catholic families who accompanied him in the zeal of Father Charles Whelen are not simply a chapter of past history but a living legacy which which you continue in our own day. For us, here at St. Thomas the story begins with Edward Howard. He came here in 1787, bringing with him, the beliefs and practices of Catholicism. Sixty families formed themselves into a "Leaque" and, collectively planned a migration to Kentucky. Though the migration would continue for decades and have other points of departure, the "Leaque of Sixty" came from St. Mary's County, Maryland in three expeditions: 1785, 1786, and 1787.The focal points of their Kentucky settlements were, respectively, (present -day names) Holy Cross, (Marion County), St. Charles (Marion County), and St. Thomas (Nelson County) At the "Poplar Neck" Plantation, Edward Howard had died leaving the property to one son, Thomas and his wife, Ann Gough Howard. They were now in their declining years, and having no children, the deeded the property in it's entirety to the Bishop, and his successors. Their only requests were that they be allowed to end their days at "Poplar Neck," and that the property always be in the ownership of the church. Bishop Flaget gratefully, acceded to the requests, and re-named the property "St. Thomas," after the patron saint of the donor. The Howard's encouraged the Bishop and his confreres to move into their home and build a smaller one for the couple. From Jerry Clark: Based on this history Thomas Howard must have died the same year he deeded property to Bishop Flaget. Edward Howard came to Kentucky in 1787, but no idea when he died.

===================================================================== Match: Bowles Source: MDSTMARY-L@rootsweb.com From: "Linda Reno" <lindareno@comcast.net> Subject: Re: [MDSTMARY-L] Thomas Howard and Ann Gough Hi Melissa and List, Thanks for bringing up that issue. I agree that Augustine Ethelbert Cissell (son of John Baptist and Rebecca) and Ethelbert Cissell (son of John Cissell and Henrietta) are two different men. I have the wife of Ethelbert Cissell (1763-1/21/1826) as Elizabeth Mattingly, but I don't have a middle name of Maria for her. She did, however, name her daughter (and only child as far as I know), Elizabeth Maria Cissell (who married George H. Morgan). I have no real proof, but strongly suspect that the mother of Ethelbert Cissell and wife of John Cissell was Henrietta Knott, daughter of William Knott and Ann Mattingly (daughter of Thomas Mattingly II, 1650-1714, and his second wife, Elizabeth). Lots of interactions between the Knotts and Mattinglys. Will of William Knott, SMC, 1/30/1737-3/7/1737. To: Daughters--Monica, Mildred, Henrietta, and Winifred; John Brayfield; sons, Benjamin and Thomas; and Mary Mattingly, personalty. Sons: John and Ignatius, each 50 ac. of dwelling plantation and personalty after their mother's decease. To: Other 7 children and wife Ann (Exec.), residue of estate. Wit.: Richard Cooper, William Smith, John Baptist Buckman. (Maryland Calendar of Wills). I feel more confident in saying, though, that Mildred Knott, daughter of William and Ann, married Michael Cusic shortly after her father's will was made. It's based on this: 11/14/1744: Michael Cusick paid by the estate of James Clarke, SMC. (James Clarke, son of John Clarke, Jr. and Elizabeth Mattingly, Ann Mattingly Knott's half sister). 5/8/1749: Admin. accts. of Ignatius Knott, SMC. Sureties: Thomas Simpson, John Medley Simpson. Payments from: Richard Hayden, Thomas Knott, Michael Cusic, James Vincent, and William Knott. Payments to: John Eden, William Suttle, Ann Knott, Capt. Robert Chesley, Capt. Gilbert Ireland, Thomas Simpson, Jr., Thompson Simpson, Sr., Thomas Black. Distribution to: accountant (widow, 1/3). Residue to (orphans): Sarah Knott (aged 10); Richard Basil Knott (aged 6); Elizabeth Knott (aged 4). Admin.: George Thompson. Admin. accts. of John Knott, 6/26/1749. Sureties: Edward Field, John Toon. Received from: James Buckman, William Knott, Samuel Mattingly, John Cartwright, Michael Cusic. Payments to: Philip Key, Richard Cooke, Ann Knott, Joseph Javens, Ignatius Mattingly, Monica Stewart, Grace Johnson, Thomas Knott, Capt. Gilbert Ireland, Michael Cusic, Capt. Robert Chesley. Admin.: William Knott. NOTE: Ignatius Knott and John Knott were the brothers of Mildred Knott. Mary Knott, dau. of William Knott and Ann Mattingly, married Henry Mattingly, son of Charles Mattingly (son of Thomas II and Elizabeth). Winifred Knott, another daughter, married ______Mattingly (can't figure out his first name for sure and can't place him). 11/30/1767: Bapt. Rebecca, dau. of Aleseius (Aloysius?) and Winifred Mattingly. GP: Zachariah Knott and Ann Boarman (Jesuit Missions). NOTE: Zachariah Knott was a brother of Winifred Knott. 4/20/1770: Baptism of Matthew Mattingly, child of Alexander (?) and Winifred Mattingly. GP: John Maddox and Susan Branson. Jerry mentions an Augustine Ethelbert Cissell (son of John Baptist Cissell and Rebecca), who married Henrietta Rhodes They had one son, whose name escapes me.This family emigrated from MD to KY. There is another Ethelbert Cissell (son of John Cissell and Henrietta) who married Elizabeth Maria Mattingly (I believe her to be the daughter of Thomas Mattingly (of Clement of Thomas III) and Elizabeth, who had one daughter, Elizabetha Maria Cecil. This Ethelbert used the Cecil spelling towards the end of his life. This family stayed in St. Mary's County, as documented through census and records of public service....two distinctly different families. As a direct descendant of this Ethelbert, I have an interest in the distinction. I almost always see these two families snarled together with one father, (Augustine) Ethelbert Cissell, married to two wives, both Henrietta (or Harriett Rhodes) and Elizabeth Mattingly and two children, a son and daughter. I am certain this is incorrect, and can provide enough documentation on the St. Mary's family to prove so, if any one would like to see proof. If any of you can provide info to help me unsnarl, I would like to know more. Thanks, Jerry for letting me piggyback on you! Melissa Young ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jerry L. Rest of the listings for Thomas Howard- Will Abstracts 1785-1820, Nelson Co Genealogists: same source, pg 48 ; Will Book pg 242: Inventory of personal estate of Thomas Howard, dec'd by Edward Montgomery, Joshua Hobbs & John Jupin. 24 Nov 1810. Not sure who Joshua Hobbs & John Jupin were, does anyone know who they married? Who did Raphael Knotts marry? Now John Baptist Cissell married twice once to an Ann ? and if I have it correctly he had: Sarah Cissell who married Augustine Barron Mathew Cissell who married Sarah Howard daughter of John Baptist Howard and Elizabeth Johnson Mary Cissell who married Charles Howard son of of John Baptist Howard and Elizabeth Johnson Zacharia Cissell who married Sarah Miles daughter of Barton Elexius Miles and Priscilla ? John Baptist Cissell then married Rebecca ? and had: Augustine Ethelbert Cissell who married Henrietta Rhodes Thomas Cissell Ann "Nancy Cissell who married Leonard Mattingly son of Leonard Mattingly Sr. William Cissell Sylvester Cissell Jeremiah Cissell married Mary Vessells daughter of James Vessells and Temperance Tippetts Henry B. Cissell Zacharia Cissell who married an Ann Clarke Now I have Valentine Hefner married to Priscilla Burch on 18 Jan 1808 Nelson County, KY daughter of Walter Burch and Teresa Hagan So If I look at will of Thomas Howard son of Edward Howard if he is referring to his niece Mary Cissell, was she the same Mary Cissell who married Charles Howard son of John Baptist Howard? I have Henry Burch married to Teresa Parker Charles Howard who married Mary Cisell married on 22 Dec 1796 Nelson County, Ky so if Thomas Howard was referring to same Mary Cissell then why would he not address her as Mary Cisell (Howard) What other Mary Cissell could he be referring to? Did Edward Howard marry a Burch or did John Baptist Cissell marry a Burch as either one of his wives? There is a clue we just have not figured out yet that could open this up more on mystery of Howard's from st. Mary's County, Maryland who went to Nelson or Washington County, KY Perhaps Linda can give us another one of her revelations such as John Baptist Howard marrying Elizabeth Johnson which put in place several children of David Johnson and who they married. Any corrections or additions I welcome. ===================================

Family Tree DNA has established a service called Y-Search [http://www.ysearch.org/] that allows participants to compare their results with others with different surnames and even from those who have tested with a different service. In order to participate in Y-Search a Bowles DNA Project participant has to elect to join it. To do so, he does the following (I hope you participants are listening [grin]): 1. Go to your private webpage at familytree.com. 2. Click on the Y-DNA Matches tab (You won't see this tab until you have results to examine). 3. On the next page you will see a box of information about additional possibilities for searching matches. It tells about Y-Search and there is a link at the bottom for you to place your data at that site. You will still have as much privacy as you need, but will be able to see if your results match the results of others in that database. One thing to remember: Matching the first 12 markers with other surnames will almost always given your false matches. Matching all of the first 25 markers with another surname stands a better chance of finding a potential relative. I do recommend that participants join Y-Search after they have received all of their results. If you have additional questions, don't hesitate to ask. Charlie, Is there a way we can compare any of the Bowles DNA results with result for surnames that sound the same or are sometimes confused for Bowles? I'm thinking about names like Boles, Boaz, Boales. Or even Bolling. I'm just wondering if this might not be a way of sorting out some of our spelling problems. Brenda Pflaum
We have some additional results that I have posted to the webpage at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~gensoup/bowlesdna.html for you to see. The most significant is that kits 29356 and 29524 continue to match perfectly through 25 markers. The significance of this can best be seen in the chart below for these two. 100 yrs 200 yrs 300 yrs 400 yrs 500 yrs 600 yrs 12 markers 33.57% 55.88% 70.69% 80.53% 87.07% 91.41% 25 markers 61.17% 84.92% 94.15% 97.73% 99.12% 99.66% As you can see, these two have a very high percentage (94.15%) that they share a common ancestor within the last 300 years. Before getting their second set of markers (13-25) those percentages were considerably lower. If you have been considering joining our project, I encourage you to visit the join page at http://www.familytreedna.com/surname_join.asp?code=W26816&special=true and sign up soon. Crest - a man's hand holding a bear's paw [represents main-ours, a typical heraldic pun in french]. Reference: College of Arms MS. H8. The old family Coat is also to be found in the form sable an eagle splayed or a chief argent. In 1787 the family [mistakenly] assumed by Royal License the elaborate Tudor Arms granted to Sir Roger Mynore in place of the older and simpler Coat. Not having spotted the French pun, the Crest was registered as a man's right arm embowed holding a bear's paw. The Motto now used is "Spero ut Fidelis". There is no Motto in the Visitation of 1530, and the age and provenance of this Motto is not known. Hi everyone Im new to this - so please bear with me! My grandmother was a Bowles originating in the Yarmouth area of England back in the early 1900's. I am currently researching her family (along with many others) and have come to a 'brick wall'. I have managed to get back to Edward Bowles bn around 1730 married to Elizabeth Edwards. Their children were Thomas, Susannah, Edward and Deborah. Thomas bn 1760 then went on to marry Mary Fleming and had children Elizabeth, Edward, Mary, Thomas, Sarah, Samuel, William, Jonathan. Jonathan bn 1803 married Sarah Greensides and they had a son Jonathan bn 1833 who then married Julia Agnes Ninham. I hope that some (or all) of this may strike a chord with someone - any information or leads you could give me would be greatly appreciated! Thanks for your patience! Sharon
