    3. ===================================================================== Match: Bowles Source: MDSTMARY-L@rootsweb.com From: "Linda Reno" <lindareno@comcast.net> Subject: Re: [MDSTMARY-L] Eleanor Bowles Hi Leathel, That's what I have BUT......I'm not convinced that Eleanor, wife of John (Bould) Bowles, John Medley Thompson, and John Bradburn was the daughter of Luke Cissell and Thomasine Hayden. Ms. Donnelly asserts that she was and bases it on this: 11/15/1757: Luke Cissell and his wife deeded "Finchley" to John Medley Thompson who had married their daughter Eleanor. (Donnelly). In this case, she simply stated the wrong date as the transfer took place in 1737 vs. 1757, however, the transfer of property did not necessarily mean that Eleanor was their daughter. There is no mention in any records that I've found that would link Eleanor to Luke and Thomasine Cissell. And....again, sometimes land was just sold, not always inherited. From my notes: 11/15/1737: "Finchley", 300 ac., St. Clement's Hundred, surveyed 11/29/1670 for Arthur Thompson. Possessor: James Gray, but the land belongs to Richard Hughes of Virginia. 6/6/1716: 300 ac. from William Maria Farthing to William Hayden. 3/5/1724: 300 ac. from William Maria Farthing to William Hayden. 11/15/1737: 149 ac. from Luke Cecil and wife to John Medley Thompson. (SMC Rent Rolls, 1639-1771). Ms. Donnelly also assumed that John Bould was the son of George Bowles and Lillias Watson. She gave them a number of children and then killed them off. There is no evidence that George Bowles and Lillias Watson had any children whatsoever and I don't believe that they did. Both George and Lillias had wills and neither will named any grandchildren or anybody with the surname Bowles or Bould. George left all to Lillias and then she left one item to Elizabeth Nevison and the remainder to her siblings in Scotland. She says: "Information should not be thought of as 'right' or 'wrong' but as having some element of truth, not necessarily 100%. For instance, if there is a family story of a sailor ancestor who served with Nelson then there probably was a sailor ancestor, but over the centuries a story has 'walked'. Nearly at Trafalgar, becomes at Trafalgar, and then serving on Victory at Trafalgar. Cynical researchers say that the reason Victory nearly sank after the battle was the weight of all the people's ancestors who claim to have been on board!" Extrapolating this idea in a South African context, if the numerous people who claim that their ancestor was a defender of Rorke's Drift in the Anglo-Zulu campaign of 1879 were to be correct in their hopeful assumption, the British would have out-numbered the Zulus at that battle and the course of history would have been radically altered. 1. Looking for Harold Bowles Regarding DNA
    2. Charles Hartley
    3. First of all, I can't personally vouch for the following information. All that I know about it is contained in this message. In looking around on the internet, I came across a site at [http://www.melungeons.com/articles/melungeondnaproject.htm] that contains information about something called the Melungeon DNA Project. On that page was some Bowles information including the following excerpt: "Our BOWLES sample came from Harold Bowles, who traces his ancestry to Chief Bowles, who was born about 1746 and died July 16, 1839. Bowles married three or more women, all Cherokee, including Jennie Due, the daughter of Robert Due and Elizabeth Emory; Oo-ti-yu VANN, and Oo-lootsa, daughter of Tah-chee, half-brother to Sequoyah." I spoke with someone at Family Tree DNA and learned that this Harold Bowles had been tested AND that his 12 markers matched three of our participants. Regrettably the only email address I have for this Harold Bowles (hlbowles@milx.net) is no longer any good. I have informed the three matching participants privately about this, and until I learn more about this Harold Bowles I don't feel comfortable sharing any more information about him. If there is anyone here who knows Harold Bowles, please contact me privately. Thanks, Charlie Hartley Bowles DNA Project Administrator

No one has answered this question (see below): The other one I looked hard at was that she was a daughter of Sarah Howard (dau. of John Baptist Howard, brother of Thomas) and Matthew Cissell who were married in KY on March 17, 1795. Did they have a daughter by that name? In trying to place Thomas Howard again, I noticed that I do a guy in my database of the right age. In "The State of His Lordship's Manor", 1768 were listed together: William Howard, Jr., b. 1728; Nicholas Howard, b. 1748; and Thomas Howard (b. 1740). I have nothing further on them. I had followed them on Census records but when I started using an IBM compatable computer instead of a Macintosh Computer I switched Genealogy programs to Legacy, and when I downloaded my gedcom file none of the notes came with it that I had, come to find out this was a glitch in Legacy program, which they have since fixed from what they say, but I need to create a new file and try to download the Gedcom again. I also lost some data when my daughter loaded up service pack two of Windows XP, it has all kinds of bugs in it, and it caused a computer crash. I lost most of my Howard updates from lasts years discussion including our discussion of David Johnson. I need to go back in archives of Rootsweb to retrieve it, but have not done so, due to lack of time. Can anyone update the children of Mathew Cissell and Sarah Howard. Mathew J. Clark" <jerry876@comcast.net> Subject: Thomas Howard/ Mary Cissell Dear List, I was examining this will of Thomas Howard who married Ann Gough daughter of Peter Gough and Eleanor Bowles. I noticed something that I have never paid attention to. I'm always trying to figure out who this Mary Cissell was he mentions in his will, but the real thing I should have noticed was he calls this Mary Cissell his Niece. Now Somewhere If I remember Correctly in the history of St. Thomas Church when it discusses Edward Howard does it every say Thomas Howard was his only son? If Edward Howard had other sons any children they had would be Nieces and Nephews of Thomas Howard, but they would all carry the name Howard, but If Thomas Howard had sisters then his Nieces and Nephews of his Sister or Sisters, would carry the Surname of who they Married. What I never noticed before is that Mary Cissell is the Niece of Thomas Howard, which means that Thomas Howard had a Sister (don't know her name) who married a ? Cissell, and they had a daughter Mary Cissell. Anybody got any idea of a possibility of a female ? Howard who married a ? Cissell? No wonder the Cissell Family has close ties to Howard Family. I then got this idea to look at James Vessells and temperance Tippets and their Children: Mary Vessells married Jeremiah Cissell son of John Baptist Cissell and Rebecca ? Charles Vessells married Catherine Howard daughter of James Howard a Mary Jackson. James Howard is supposed to be a brother to Edward Howard whose son Thomas Howard (has a Mary Cissell for a niece) William Vessells married Elizabeth "Betsy" Mills (anyone know her parents) Thomas Vessells (don't know if or who he married) James Vessells married Eleanor Mattingly daughter of Joseph f. Mattingly and Hessina Hinton. Benjamin Vessells ann Drury(does anyone know her parents) John Vessells married Mary Peterson daughter of Henry Peterson and Olivia Smock her brother Henry Smock was either a witness on will of John Baptist Howard or his brother James Howard who married Mary Jackson. Elijah Vessells married Catherine Forrest (can anyone tell me her parents?) was she related to Thomas Forrest who married Mary "Mollie" Howard daughter of James Howard and Mary Jackson. I believe that James Vessells his father was also a witness on will of James Howard who died 1803 in Washington County, KY Susanna Vessells married John Oard Elizabeth Vessells married William Lampkin pg 47; Will book 209. Will of Thomas Howard. Wife Ann, negroes, plantation and stock. Niece Mary Cissell, some stock and furniture. A part of the land devised to the Catholic Church. Exec: wife Ann. Rest of the listings for Thomas Howard- Will Abstracts 1785-1820, Nelson Co Genealogists: same source, pg 48 ; Will Book pg 242: Inventory of personal estate of Thomas Howard, dec'd by Edward Montgomery, Joshua Hobbs & John Jupin. 24 Nov 1810. same source-pg 77: 2 listings for Howard: pg 420: Appraisal of the personal estate of William Howard, dec'd, by Thomas Linthicum, Thomas Lewis, Cyrus Talbot & Joseph Ferguson. Ordered Dec 1815. Total $864.37 1/2 18 negroes valued at $5770. I then started to study which Cissells had daughters named Mary. John Baptist Cissell and 2nd wife Ann ? had a daughter Mary Cissell and she married Charles Howard son of John Baptist Howard and Elizabeth Johnson, But I don't think Thomas Howard was referring to that Mary Cissell as his Niece, because She was already married to Charles Howard by the time his will was probated, unless he made his will before date of Marriage of Mary Cissell to Charles Howard. Peter Cissell married an Eleanor ? they had a daughter Mary Cissell who married John Hanson Burch on 14 Sept 1811 in Nelson County, Ky This is after date that Thomas Howard's will was Probated. Is this The Mary Cissell Thomas Howard was Referring to in his will? If so we know this Mary Cissell came to Nelson County, KY because John Hanson Burch did Also. Remember that John Hanson Burch had a sister Priscilla Burch who married Valentine Hefner a witness on will of Thomas Howard. His brother Alexander " Sandy" Burch married Eleanor Cissell daughter of Peter Cissell and Eleanor ?(who I believe was Thomas Howard's Sister) Burch Family are Witnesses on will I Believe of John Baptist Howard. 3. ===================================================================== Match: Bowles Source: MDSTMARY-L@rootsweb.com From: "Jerry L. Wit: Henry Burch, Raphael Knotts & Valin Hefner. Written 28 May 1810, prob 16 Jul 1810. Total $864.37 1/2 + 18 negroes valued at $5770. So I present a new thought, Could it be that Eleanor ? wife of Peter Cissell was a Howard by maiden name? was she the daughter of Edward Howard, and the sister of Thomas Howard who died in 1810 in Nelson County, KY. Please tell me is there a possibility?
