J.H. CLENDENNAN. St. Catharines, May 3, 1826. 13tf" St. Catharines Evening Journal, Apr 3 1867, p1, c1 (AO/N-77 r20) ALOCAL AND MISCELLANEOUS. LINCOLN SPRING ASSIZES. SECOND DAY. April 2d, 1867. Court opened this morning at 9:30 o'clock. Durham et. al. vs. Newcombe - Ejectment. This action excited considerable attention, from the fact that very many of the titles to property in town might be affected by the result. The facts of the case appeared to be that in 1832 the late Jonathan Huston Clendennan conveyed a block of land on Yate Street, and extending back to Cherry Street, to Mr. Rufus Wright, who retained possession of it until the marriage of his daughter to the late Henry Burgoyne, in 1853, when he conveyed the south-westerly half of the lot to her. The deed from Clendennan to Wright is very faulty in the description, and so is that from the latter to his daughter. The two witnesses to the first deed, Mr. Gershom Wright and Mr. Smith, are dead, and the only evidence as to the intention of Mr. Clendennan was to be obtained from collateral testimony. Mr. H. J. Mittleberger represented Mr. Clendennan as having been a very careful man of business, and stated that he (Mr. M.) was the oldest inhabitant, having come to St. Catharines in 1827. - The next witness, Mr. Boles, stated the same in reference to Mr. Clendennan's business habits, and claimed to have come to this town in 1823. The next witness, Mr. Henry Mittleberger, showed that he was the "oldest inhabitant," for he came here in 1822, and said that Mr. Clendennan was a very careful man, marking the boundaries of his land every two or three days with stones, bottles, oyster shells, &c., a statement which was received with some merriment. Verdict, by consent, for plaintiff, with one shilling damages, with leave for the defendant to move to set the verdict aside and have one entered for him. The Court to draw inferences from the facts which are undisputed." =========================

Elizabeth II (1952 Elizabeth II, born April 21, 1926, is the eldest daughter of George VI and Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon. She married Philip Mountbatten, a distant cousin, in 1947; the pair have four children: Charles, Prince of Wales, Anne, Andrew and Edward. She has reigned for forty-six years, and appears capable of remaining on the throne for quite some time. Monarchy, as an institution in Europe, all but disappeared during the two World Wars: a scant ten monarchs remain today, seven of which have familial ties to England. Elizabeth is, by far, the best known of these, and is the most widely traveled Head of State in the world. Her ascension was accompanied by constitutional innovation; each independent, self-governing country proclaimed Elizabeth, Queen of their individual state. She approves of the transformation from Empire to Commonwealth, describing the change as a "beneficial and civilized metamorphosis." The indivisibility of the crown was formally abandoned by statute in 1953, and "Head of the Commonwealth" was added to the long list of royal titles which she possesses. Elizabeth's travels have won the adulation of her subjects; she is greeted with honest enthusiasm and warm regard with each visit abroad. She has been the master link in a chain of unity forged among the various countries within the Commonwealth. Hence, the monarchy, as well as the Empire, has evolved - what once was the image of absolute power is now a symbol of fraternity. Elizabeth has managed to maintain a division between her public and private life. She is the first monarch to send her children to boarding schools in order to remove them from the ever-probing media. She has a strong sense of duty and diligence and dispatches her queenly business with great candor, efficiency and dignity. Her knowledge of current situations and trends is uncannily up to date, often to the embarrassment of her Prime Ministers. Harold Wilson, upon his retirement, remarked, "I shall certainly advise my successor to do his homework before his audience." Churchill, who had served four monarchs, was impressed and delighted by her knowledge and wit. She possesses a sense of humor rarely exhibited in public where a dignified presence is her goal. Elizabeth, like her father before her, raised the character of the monarchy through her actions. Unfortunately, the actions of her children have tarnished the royal name. The much publicized divorces of Charles from Diana and Andrew from Sarah Ferguson have been followed by further indiscretions by the princes, causing a heavily-taxed populace to rethink the necessity of a monarchy. Perhaps Elizabeth will not reign as long as Victoria, but her exceptionally long reign has provided a bright spot in the life of her country. The Coronation Ceremony of Queen Elizabeth II The Order of Service and a transcript of every spoken word of the Coronation ceremony performed in Westminster Abbey on June 2, 1953. George VI, born December 14, 1895, was the second son of George V and Mary of Teck. He was an unassuming, shy boy who greatly admired his brother Edward, Prince of Wales. From childhood to the age of thirty, George suffered with a bad stammer in his speech, which exacerbated his shyness; Lionel Logue, an Australian speech therapist, was instrumental in helping George overcome the speech defect. George married Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon in 1923, who bore him two daughters, Elizabeth and Margaret. He died from cancer on February 6, 1952. Due to the controversy surrounding the abdication of Edward VIII, popular opinion of the throne was at its lowest point since the latter half of Victoria's reign. The abdication, however, was soon overshadowed by continental developments, as Europe inched closer to yet another World War. After several years of pursuing "appeasement" policies with Germany, Great Britain (and France) declared war on Germany on September 3, 1939. George, following in his father's footsteps, visited troops, munitions factories, supply docks and bomb-damaged areas to support the war effort. As the Nazi's bombed London, the royal family remained at Buckingham Palace; George went so far as to practice firing his revolver, vowing that he would defend Buckingham to the death. Fortunately, such defense was never necessary. The actions of the King and Queen during the war years greatly added to the prestige of the monarchy. George predicted the hardships following the end of the war as early as 1941. From 1945-50, Great Britain underwent marked transitions. The Bank of England, as well as most facets of industry, transportation, energy production and health care, were brought to some degree of public ownership. The birth pangs of the Welfare State and the change from Empire to multiracial Commonwealth troubled the high-strung king. The political turmoil and economic hardships of the post-war years left the king physically and emotionally drained by the time of his death. In the context of royal history, George VI was one of only five monarchs who succeeded the throne in the lifetime of his predecessor; Henry IV, Edward IV, Richard III, and William III were the other four. George, upon his ascension, wrote to Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin concerning the state of the monarchy: "I am new to the job but I hope that time will be allowed to me to make amends for what has happened." His brother Edward continued to advise George on matters of the day, but such advice was a hindrance, as it was contradictory to policies pursued by George's ministers. The "slim, quiet man with tired eyes" (as described by Logue) had a troubled reign, but he did much to leave the monarchy in better condition than he found it. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ludema" <skyking@scrtc.com> To: <BOWLES-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, March 18, 2005 3:55 PM Subject: Queen Elizabetrh
Elizabeth Angela Marguerite Bowes(Bowles??)-Lyon was born at St. Paul's Waldenbury, to the Earl and Countess of Strathmore, August 4 1904. She was the second born, in a family of ten. Her father's title and ancestry were Scottish, and the ancestral home was the grim and gaunt castle of Glamis in Forfarshire. Her English mother was Celia Cavendish-Bentinck, cousin of the Duke of Portland. On January 16 1923 the King and Queen anounced the betrothal of their son Albert, the Duke of York, to the daughter of the Earl and Countess of Stathmore, Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon. On April 26 1923, Westminster Abby was ablaze with gorgeous uniforms of scarlet and gold, blue and silver. The bridegroom was accompanied by his brothers, the Prince of Wales and the Duke of Gloucester. Then, the Duke of York and the future Queen Elizabeth were married. In 1952, their daughter Elizabeth would become the queen of England.

Hi all! William and Margaret (Neigin/Nugent) Bowles are my 3rd greatparents. From them I descend from their son, John Andrew Bowles who married Jane Cordelia (Jennie) Farrand, and then their son William Andrew who married Irma May Peck. My problem is that I can't find anything else on William and Margaret's family or parents beyond a couple clues and hints. The family from them i have pretty pat. I'd be glad for any other tidbit, snippet of info from any of my possible Bowles cousins out there. What i have thus far is below. Please pardon any errors in spelling, grammar, etc.- it's pretty much stream of conscience from my FTM notes. Thanks so very very much for anything anybody's got on my Bowles family. - Becky MacAllester ======================================================================================= 1. WILLIAM E1 BOWLES was born 06 Oct 1816 in VA and died 19 Jan 1884 in WI. He married MARGARET E NUGENT 15 Jun 1843 in St Clair Co, IL. She was born 25 Jan 1822 in Cincinnati, OH, and died 24 Feb 1898 in Platteville, Grant, WI. Notes for WILLIAM E BOWLES: He was a lead miner and owned his home in Potosi. * My William Bowles had his first child, Thomas (Robert), in IL. There are a bunch of Bowles' who emmigrated IL near the Missouri border (near St Louis), but not sure how (or if) William Sr fits in with this. They must not have stayed there long, however, since William E the younger was born in WI 2 years later. * I cant find anything else Neigin on the Internet, except a Robert Neigin in the 1860 census in Fremont, Newaygo, MI, p 951 and a Patrick Neigin who bought land in Kenosha, WI Mar 1, 1848. Nugent seems fairly common. * There is a William Boyles who bought land in grant co in 1841 --could be him wiht name mispelled BOYLES WILLIAM 26 2 N 1 W 80 10 4079 1841/01/05 CHARLES BRACKEN ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- *Info from Kathy Wolfe Grant County Lookup volunter: "From Arlene Hamilton's "Potosi Project" the following information was gathered by her: William E. Bowles, was born 6 Oct 1816 VA (father born England and mother born Scotland). He died 19 Jan 1884 at age 67 years 3 mo and 13 days. He was married to Margaret Nugent who was born 25 Jan 1822 at Cincinnati, OH and died 24 Feb 1898 at Platteville. Her death record said she was buried at Van Buren Cemetery, Potosi, WI, but there doesn't appear to be a stone there. In the 1850 census he was a miner and in 1855 census he lived in Potosi. The Grant County Herald paper of Jan 24, 1884, stated he came to Potosi mines early. The 1870 census gives his real estate at $200, with no personal ppty. In 1898 Margaret came to St. Louis while yet tender in years. Came to Potosi with her husband 50 years ago (1848), maybe 1846. The 1880 census listed him as a laborer, but was disabled, she was also disabled and they lived in Potosi Village......... "Arlene and I worked on a project where we copied columns that appeared in the Grant County Herald newspaper written by an early Justice of the Peace, Edward Wilmot. His column was entitled "With the Potosi Pioneers" and we felt they were so good, we copied all of them and I put an index with it and we sell these booklets as a fundraiser for our local Passage Thru Time Museum which is located in Potosi. I checked that index and found a paragraph contained William Bowles name on page 100 of that booklet. In this article he is describing where various people lived and mentions that William Bowles had built a frame dwelling which had been removed long ago. (This article was printed Jan 17, 1923). He goes on to state that a small frame dwelling now stands on the lot and is owned and occupied by Louis Gable and family. I expect that there are people in Potosi who could tell you just where this house was located. Mrs Francis (Bernice) Reding is in poor health now, but her au! nt was Mrs. Louis Gable and you might want to contact her. Her address is 183 N Main Street, Potosi, WI 53820. Her phone number is (608) 763-2243. If you are interested in the local history you might want to purchase this booklet. It sells for $30.00 plus the postage and handling of $3.50. If you are a member of the Grant County Genealogical Society you could also borrow it from their library with it just costing you the postage it takes to send the booklet to you. In checking the indexes I have for the Grant County Herald newspaper which was published at Lancaster, WI covering the years 1843 thru 1879) I only found two entries: Bowles, Amia married Thomas Nichols on 27 Jan 1870 at Hazel Green tp in Feb 15, 1870 paper on page 3 column 5. Bowles, Mary F married Chas. H. O'Hare on 19 Jan 1873 at Potosi tp in Feb 18, 1873 paper page 3 column 2. These papers are on microfilm at the Wisconsin Room, Karrmann Library, University of Wisconsin-Platteville. In checking the Fennimore Times indexes which I have (covering 1889 -1909) I find: Bowles, Thomas of Boscobel, died Dec 1893, an old resident in Dec 14, 1893 paper page 8 column 1. The birth records in Grant county start in the 1870s and those are rather sparse. The death records also start about that time. I imagine that Arlene checked our Grant County Genealogical Society Cemetery Card file which is a record of inscriptions on stones that the group copied years ago. There was a lot of lead mining done in this area and don't know if there would be any work records. Possibly the Wisconsin Room could be of some help. There were mines located right in Potosi itself. In fact the St. John Mine was an early mine that operated from the 1830s until after the Civil War. Sincerely, Kathy Wolfe" --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Margaret who married Charles O'Hara is daughter of William and Margaret, but don't know who Amia is yet. Need to order the booklet and do some digging in Grant County some time. * Notes for MARGARET E NUGENT: WI Death Index: Name: Margaret E Bowler Death Date: 24 Feb 1898 County: Grant Volume: 02 Page: 0377 Reel: 031 Image: 1202 Index Volume: - Sequence #: 037053 Got her death record, but her parents' names are not on it - gggggrrrrrr. Can't find William's death record under any variation I tried - Boyles, Boles, bowles, Bowes, Boyle, Bowl, Bowls, etc, etc. Sigh. *got a hint from St Clair county (I need to find this paper again...its somewhere in this mess) that Margaret was under a guardianship when she married William? Her parents must have died when she was young. Need more on these folks....did they die in OH or IL? *I found an Andrew Nugent in the 1830 Census for Whitewater, Hamilton, OH (Hamilton is a Cincinnati county) who has a daughter between 5 and 10 -- could be him??? It would explain the continuation of Andrew in the boys' names -- John Andrew and William Andrew. *According to census, Margaret's father was French and mother Scottish. Mom remembers being told here is French in the family from this side, but nothing else. Name is Neigin for marriage in St Clair county (Belleville), IL, but Nugent on death record. Neigin sounds French...anglicized to Nugent??? More About WILLIAM BOWLES and MARGARET NUGENT: Marriage: 15 Jun 1843, St Clair Co, IL Children of WILLIAM BOWLES and MARGARET NUGENT are: i. ===================================================================== Match: Bowles Source: GEN-MAT-HX-L@rootsweb.com From: "Helen" <Helenh@pdq.net> Subject: Civil War History - See Names Storm Over The Land, A Profie of the Civil War, Carl Sandburg, 1939, 1942-no later date, but I do think it is a later reprint. Blue hardback with silver printing, illustrated dustcover - both in very good condition other than a crease to the inside front dustcover flap, and a small errant penmark on the front freepage which almost looks more like a defect in the paper than a pen mark. 6-3/4 x 9-1/2, 440 pages, lovely pen and ink illustrations similar to those found in a Harpers book, some maps, soldier's ditties, nice sized print, index, really in wonderful condition. Per the jacket: "The United States of America had its national unity hammered out in storm - the four tremendous years of the Civil War. Here is Carl Sandburg's storyof those years - campaigns and generals, the common soldier in struggle, laughter and daring - politics behind battle lines, clashes of loyalists and malcontents, dark hours on the home front, unbreakable faiths in high and low places. Storm over the Land is taken mainly from the four volumes of Abraham Lincoln: The War Years. Mr. Sandburg has rewritten some sections to form a single volume, with all the mastery of detail which characterized the great biography from which it is taken, and which forms a complelte story. It is a narrative unmatched in dramaatic suspense, because it is our own drama, the storm over our own land." This is a book for the common man as well as the historian that offers interesting, easily read and understandable coverage of a dark time in America's history. Charley, in the Farquar book, there is reference to a Bowles that went over the mountain and was lost. This may account for the DNA match on the Melungeon group. Have misplaced my copy of the Farquar book. Will look for same, and send more info. Redbird supposedly was fathered by a Scottish fur trader. I dont know or dont think any one has the info . I think the lost Bowles was about the right age to have been Redbirds father. Will check this out further when I find my copy. Bill Bowles.
Could someone tell me if there is a marriage for ; Jerminah Bowles to ? Wade after 1782 in Hanover Co, Va.. Thank you, Ludema Bowles
