Would you have to be 21 to be a Teste. to a Deed in 1811? Could you Teste at age 16? Good news my John Fleming Bowles b.1790 is a 25 point DNA match to Elijah Bowles b1751. Leathel, Elijah Boles of Barren Co. to Clabon Boles, 1811. $300, Peters Creek, John Middleton....Teste: Johiors (sic) Burr, Jacke Bowles, Wm Bowles. ( Note: Johiors (sic) Burr is John Byars)
An Opportunity to Share The Y-DNA test (25 marker) costs $169, and that is more than some can afford. At the same time, they would be happy to take the test if it didn't cost quite so much. That's were the rest of us can help. It is possible to contribute money to a general fund that would be made available as the need arises. It can be handled in one of two ways. Contributions can be made (any amount) by going to the webpage at http://www.familytreedna.com/contribution.html where you can use either a credit card, paypal, or regular mail to make a contribution to the general fund (not in anyone's name in particular). Then it would be up to the administrator to determine how the funds could be used as needed. I am not particularly in favor of this method for it places the responsibility on me to decide how the general fund money is allocated. A better idea, I think, would be to have individuals who are willing to be tested, but need assistance with the cost, to contact me privately, and provide me with the Bowles line that would be tested and the amount they would be able to pay toward the test. I could then share the need with the group and solicit pledges to cover the remaining cost. Once sufficient pledges were received, then those who had pledged could make their contributions in any of the ways listed above, and their money would go for that specific test. For example, let's say that a Mr. Bowles wanted to be tested, but could only afford to pay $50 of the cost. He would contact me privately, give me the information about his Bowles line, and agree to be tested if the remaining $119 could be raised. Then I would come to the group and say, "We have a potential participant in the Bowles DNA Project who needs some help with the cost of the test. He traces his line back to ___ . If you are willing to help with the cost of this test, email me privately and let me know." If a sufficient number of pledges were received, then the pledged could be redeemed with contributions to the general fund, and the test would be ordered and sent to Mr. Bowles. This could be an excellent way for you to participate in this project, either as a tester or as a contributor. Remember that this is totally voluntary, and that all funds would be funneled through Family Tree DNA. Comments and suggestions are welcome. George Dallas Albert, 1882, 1998. Blue cloth covered hardback with gilt printing, 9 x 11-1/4, 808 pages, maps, portraits, illustrations, everyname index, new book condition, a truly nice reproduction. This book has been called "the Bible" or "the book" for Westmoreland County Research. It contains detailed data on the early settlement and wars - Fort Necessity, Dusquesne, Pitt, Ligonier, the Battle of Bushy Run, etc. during the French and Indian War, Whiskey Rebellion, Revolutionary War, Civil War and others - and tells of the towns, schools, churches, canals, railroads, roads, farms, coal mining and much more, not the least of which are thousands of biographical sketches of famous and not so famous citizens of Westmoreland County and nearby areas of southwestern Pennsylvania.. Westmoreland had been created from Bedford in 1773, and from Westmoreland were created the counties of Washington, Indiana, Fayette, Allegheny with other counties created from those. So one can see that old Westmoreland covered a large area and this excellent history and biographical account may give information on earlier ancestors of those to be found in the above counties. Now I cannot begin to to give all the chapter subheadings, as listed in the Table of Contents, but the contents pretty much cover: Introductory - Early Provincial History The French Occupance of Fort Duquesne Braddock's Expedition Armstrong's Expedition, 1756 - Bouquet at Ligionier, 1758 Forbes' Expedition, 1758 First Settlements in Westmoreland - Battle of Bushy Run, 1763 Settlement from 1759 to 1769 Predominant Nationalities of the Settlers Customs, Morals, and Manners Prior to the Erection of the County Westmoreland County Organized - Courts Established, etc. First Jail - Early Punishments - Slavery in 1781 Old Hannastown, The County Seat The Border Troubles of 1774 Begin Connolly's Usurpations, Indian Alarms, Etc. We now have 17 participants in our Bowles DNA Project. We have results back for many of them, and are seeing some interesting matches. But for our project is to truly be a productive source for information about our Bowles ancestors, we need many more folks to join in. If you have thought about joining us, now is a good time to order your kit. You can order your kit by going to this webpage: [http://www.familytreedna.com/surname_join.asp?code=W26816&special=true]. I recommend that you order the Y-DNA 25 marker kit. Remember that to use the Y-DNA test, you (or the person being tested) must be a male Bowles descendent (a male Bowles, who is a son of a male Bowles, etc.). If you haven't visited our website at [http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~gensoup/bowlesdna.html] I urge you to go there and see what lines are presently being tested. If you don't see a line that you think might match yours, don't let that stop you. By adding your line to our project you create the possibility of others also joining who do match with you. The question has also risen: "Someone from my known line has already tested, do I need to test too?" The answer is complicated. However, it is always better for two or more from each known line to test to insure that minor mutations have not crept into the results. There is also the possibility that someone who believes himself to be a Bowles male descendent may find that through adoption or other events his actual line is not Bowles. We may not like to consider this possibility, but having more than one (or even two) to test in a particular line can insure that we are on the right track. We have found that the getting the results back after we return the kits usually takes 8 to 10 weeks or more, depending on the quality of the sample being tested. For this reason, it is important that we have as many testing as soon as possible as we can. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.
