Elizabeth, widow of _____Bowles, probably married second, Lawrence Young. She most likely wasn't married to Nicholas Young. The Nicholas Young (d. 1669 in St. Mary's Co.) to whom you refer did have a wife named Elizabeth, widow of Edward Parker, but she died between 1671-1679. Will of Nicholas Young, SMC 1/11/1669-1/29/1669. Wife: Elizabeth, Exec. and sole legatee of estate, real and personal including land at Cedar Point, Charles Co. and "Fresh Pond Neck" bequeathed testator by son-in-law, Edward Parker, deceased. Wit: Humphrey Warren, Robert Carville. 9/17/1679: Elizabeth Young, relict of Edward Parker, died seized of a parcel of land called "Fresh Pond Neck" in St. Michael's Hundred, SMC by virtue of a devise to her made by her son, Edward Parker in his will. William Claw and John Smallpiece were Execs. She had no apparent heirs. Shortly after proving the will, Smallpiece died. Afterward, sd. William Clawe was slain before the Susquahannough fort, having made his will with his wife Sarah, sole Exec. Said Elizabeth conveyed "Fresh Pond Neck" to John Reignolds (Reynolds) who by his will dated 8/24/1673 directed that the land be sold. Edward Jolly and his wife Margaret and John Stevens who m. sd. Margaret Jolly still hold the land. (Extracts from Chancery Court Records of Maryland, 1669-1679, MD Gen. Soc. Bulletin, Fall 1994). Lawrence Young was a resident of Charles County and he was one of the witnesses to the will of John Pope of Charles Co. on September 5, 1684. John Pope was the son of Francis Pope and Margaret Porter. Will of John Pope, Charles Co. 9/5/1684-10/18/1684. He devised 400 ac. "Rome" to Bathsheba and Mary Harris; 350 ac. "Battin's Clift" to Joseph Cornell; and 250 ac. "Bryan's Clift" to Elizabeth Burford, his kinswoman (sister of Thomas Burford). To: Mary Peter, Edward Baxter, Chris. Shadwell, personal estate. Exec: Joseph Carville. Wit: Lawrence Young, Joseph Hallimon, William Wader, Edward Boteler. (Maryland Calendar of Wills). As you may recall, Joseph Carnell (aka Cornell) was the father of Margaret Carnall who married James Tyer, Jr. (and I don't think their family name was Tyler). There was a Lawrence Young who died about 1700 in Somerset Co., but I believe he was a different man. Linda Reno

I always thought Tyler to be Taylor. The name Rebecca runs through Taylor families, for generations. Lu -------- Original Message -------- ==> From: <leathel@sbcglobal.net> ==> Date: Mon, 28 Mar 2005 22:39:57 -0500 The facts that Elizabeth Young in her will 1695 claims Bowles Tyler as her grandson. This means that Elizabeth Young was a mother to Rebecca Bowles or James Tyler? William Bowles, son of Edward, in his will 1662 lists Uncle John Bowles and kinsman James Tyre. It took me awhile to figure out which John Bowles he was calling uncle, (John died 1664 or John died 1675). When I found that it was 1673 when John Bowles was granted (Bowles Purchase), I knew which one was uncle. Now Uncle John gave to his nephew (James Tyler,Tyre)(Bowles Purchase). If that was true then John, Edward, and Rebecca Bowles were brothers and sister, and their mother Elizabeth died after 1695. The word nephew meant different things back then and since James Tyre was married to Johns niece, (Simon and Elizabeth Bowles daughter)he called (James Tyre d.1686 who married Rebecca) nephew. They most likely came south to NC from Maryland, possibly with a stop in VA. The family was Quaker and many of them are recorded in the Hinshaw book on NC Quaker meetings. I believe there also is a genealogy book on the Ephraim Bowles line that went west to Indiana. I will copy below what I have in a file on this line. Most of what I have is second-hand, although I have extracted some information from the Hinshaw book. That's about all I can contribute. I don't see much evidence of this line being connected to any of the other NC Bowles lines. I wish we could get someone from this Pasquotank Co. line to participate in the DNA project. This one's extremely important to many of us, including me! Whoever has these people in Sandi Gorin's post: step up and tell us about your ancestors and how they connect to the Bowles families. FOX and BOWLES families were connected in Virginia. We also have had a Fox connected to the BOWLES and GILLETT families. Henry SMITH married the three GILLETT sisters in succession; Henry SMITH was the uncle of Elizabeth JEFFRIES who married Benjamin BOWLES. This troop migrated to Texas together. When they got to Brazoria Co., Roswell GILLETT married Benjamin BOWLES' daughter, Martha Smith BOWLES. Where did their ancestors live? And did the men mentioned above stay in Barren County? About the Martins: their history is told in the book, "A Martin Genealogy Tied to the History of Germanna, Virginia," by William A. Martin. In it we find the ancestors and families of Malinda HOLTSCLAW, who married John F. "Jackey" Bowles. This same book lists on page 100, lists the intermarriages of several of the families in Sandi's posting: "...John MARTIN, b. prob. ca. 1755-57; m. 24 Mar. 1778 in Fauquier County, Virginia to Sarah JEFFRIES;...Sarah was the daughter of Joseph JEFFRIES whose will, dated 24 Sept. 1807, and probated on 28 Dec. 1807 in Fauquier County (Fauquier County Will Book 2, page 281) mentions his wife, Margaret, and children: William Henry Enoch Joseph George Daniel [my gggggrandfather who m. Daniel JEFFRIES maternal grandparents were Henry SMITH and Sarah CROSBY of Stafford Co., VA. I think that Charlie Royal (cnroyall@wcc.net) of our list has a CROSBY, GEE, SANDERS and a TONEY in his larger tree. Charlie, can you tell us more about these families? There's a very large book entitled, "The Maxey's of Virgina," by Edythe Maxey Clark. On page 513, Philip MAXEY is given the number 754 (1777-1820). "Philip Maxey, born 17 December 1777 in the newly-formed county of Powhatan, Virginia, was a son of the Rev. Edward Maxey and Mary Bondurant. He was only four years old when his father died and he was reared by his mother on their plantation in Powhatan until Mary remarried in 1794 to widower Nathan Ayers of Buckingham County, Virginia. Philip's name appears in District A of the 1797 personal property tax books of Buckingham County, and from 1796 through 1799 his name was found on the land tax records of Powhatan County with the 175 acres left to him by his uncle Nathaniel. Four days after his 21st birthday, Philip sold his land on the waters of Jones Creek---adjoining the properties of Ephraim Maxey, John Smith, Bennett Maxey, David Flournoy and Peter Dupuy---to his older brother Ephraim. Philip was in the tax records of Jessamine County, Kentucky, in the year 1799 and remained on their lists through 1805, with the exception of 1801. That was the year he returned to Buckingham County to marry his stepsister Elizabeth Hales Ayers (born 26 February 1784, Buckingham County, Virginia), the daughter of Nathan and Mary (Leake) Ayers, on 20 October 1801. Philip and his bride settled in Barren County, Kentucky, in 1806---in Bear Wallow, 12 miles north of Glascow, [sic] located on the present border of Hart and Barren River. He had patented 165 acres jointly with Ephraim by survey dated 14 April 1807, and this land was divided on 17 February 1817 when Ephraim sold to Philip 135 acres on the west side of Elk Lick for $20 and Philip sold 30 acres to Ephraim for the same sum. Philip also had patent land on Pawpaw Grove surveyed 13 December 1815 amounting to 150 acres." Benjamin BOWLES' daughter, Sarah, married Elijah MAXEY in Brazoria Co., TX in 1833. When she died, he took their two children back to Memphis, TN, to be reared by his sisters. Benjamin's granddaughter married into the DELL family of Florida. Spalding. At a County Court began and held for Washington County at the courthouse in Springfield 22nd day of March 1830. This last Will and Testament was exhibited in court and proved by the Oaths of Benadict Reighly and Leonard A. Spalding subscribing witnesses thereto and ordered to be Recorded which is accordingly done in book D page 466. atteste John Hughes Jr. CWC. * Clement signed either jr or sr. It's hard to determine which letter it is. It's not his capital S or J and doesn't really look like a small s or j. Either Jr or Sr would apply. He was Jr to his father, Clement I and Sr to his nephew, Clement III. Today, Sr usually means the father and Jr the son, but in those days, they used Sr to show the elder and Jr for the younger man with the same name. (Clement Parsons II's Will (from web page of Mary Schumann: http://www.geocities.com/RainForest/Andes/1595/clement2will.html, 11/12/2003). I haven't fully explored the webpage cited as a reference. You may want to take a closer look and see if Julia Ann is mentioned. Clement Parsons, Jr. (husband of Elizabeth Forrest), was the son of Clement Parsons who died in St. Mary's Co. in 1793. I'm not positive that Mary, wife of Clement, Sr. was the mother of all of the children of Clement, Sr. I believe that Mary had been married before 1760 to _____Bowles and was the mother of John Bowles. Don't know for sure, but I suspect that to be the case. Will of Clement Parsons, SMC, 2/18/1793-3/13/1793. Son-in-law: John Bowles, land in Charles County called "Amendment," 175 acres; a negro woman named Henny and her child which he now has in his possession; and everything else I have already given him. Everything that I have already given to my children, James Parsons, Joseph Parsons, Clement Parsons and Susanna Molohorn, is to be brought into my estate again and to be divided equally among all of my children after taking my wife's third. That is to say, my children, James Parsons, John Parsons, Joseph Parsons, Clement Parsons, Susanna Molohorn and Mary Parsons. The children of John Bowles are not to have any part of my estate except what I have already bequeathed to their father. Execs.: Sons, Joseph Parsons and Clement Parsons. Wit.: Stephen Jones, Joseph Howard, Leonard Johnson. NOTE: Joseph Parsons and Clement Parsons renounced executorship of this will. (St. Mary's County, Maryland Wills, 1791-1802 by Linda Reno and Joann Humphries). It's obvious, at least to me, that John Bowles was an adult at the time of the will of Clement Parsons and I would presume he was born prior to 1761 based on this record: 4/19/1761: Athanasius Windder was baptized at St. Joseph's RCC. GP: Clement and Mary Parsons. (Catholic Families of So. MD by O'Rourke). There was a William Bowles had a wife named Mary _____and they had two daughters baptized first at St. Andrew's and then again at St. Francis Xavier RCC. The godparents of both girls were Ignatius Bowles and Anastasia Cissell. There's a possibility that Clement Parsons was married to two different women named Mary. I just don't know at this point. Elizabeth Bowles, dau. of William and Mary, baptized at St. Andrew's 3/9/1776. Also baptized 4/28/1776 at St. Fr. Xav. RCC. GP: Ignatius Bowles, Anastasia Cecil. (Jesuit Missions). Mary Ann Bowles, dau. of William and Mary, baptized at St. Andrew's, 6/1/1778. Also baptized 6/18/1778 at St. Fr. Xav. RCC. GP: Ignatius Bowles, Anastasia Cecil. (Jesuit Missions). Hi I have no proven information that Patterson was the maiden name of Jane McGehee. All I have is handed down by family members. In the 1850 Federal Census of Lawrence Co. Mo., there is an Elijah McGuhe age 55 b Tenn. Sarah age 53 born in Va. Asa 18 born in Tenn and Caroll 6 born in Tenn both are listed as males. I have it that Sarah was the daughter of Asa and Rachel(Lane) Pennington. I also have that Elijah and Sarah had a daughter Luyza who married Samuel Underwood. In the 1850 census, there is Samuel Underwood 33 born in Tenn, Louisa 21 born in Tenn. Sarah J. 9 born in Tenn, William C. 5 born in Tenn, Jonah 4 born in Mo. and Nancy E. 1 born in Mo. This pretty well says they came to Mo in '45 or'46. I have another Lawrence Co history that has a lot of early marriages and see one for Marion McGehee to Mary E. Boles. They were married by Jonthan Hunt J.P. on December 11, 1854. There are marriages from 1845 to 1854. There are several Penningtons and McGehees marriages listed. Hope this helps you. Addie
The facts that Elizabeth Young in her will 1695 claims Bowles Tyler as her grandson. In 1664 when John Bowles gave all his land to his son John, his wife Anne said not so fast and filed suit for the land she had brought into the marriage for her children. Henry Southy died 1623 in Elizabeth City Co. leaving his wife Elizabeth and daughter Anne. Anne married a Littleton and a White(Waite) before she married John Bowles who died 1664 in Elizabeth City Co. With Littleton, Anne had a son Southy Littleton and with White a son John White.John Bowles may have married a sister of Anne sometime before Anne because Elizabeth (Anne's mother) made a gift to John Bowles in 1636 in Elizabeth City Co. So here is the opportunity: if you or someone you know is a male Bowles descendent, and you want to join the DNA project, but the cost has been more than you can afford, contact me privately at [mailto:hartley@iglou.com] (you should be able to click on this link to send me a message) and we will discuss the arrangements. While many of us are interested in the Bowles lines that came through Virginia, North Carolina, and Maryland to Kentucky and beyond, this offer is not limited to those lines.
