When no place is referred to exactly, or the term "this city" is used, Norwich is the place referred to. Similarly, mentions of "the Castle", "the City Gaol" etc refer to institutions in Norwich. Norfolk Chronicle 14 Dec 1782 P.1, column 1 >From microfilm supplied by the British Library Newspaper Library A letter from Ostend says, that advice being received that the English Parliament intend to open the ports for the importation of all sorts of grain, wheat is buying up in many parts, to be ready to put on board some vessels lying in the harbour, which will sail from thence as soon as it is known that the ports are open. Norfolk Chronicle 14 Dec 1782 P.2, column 2 >From microfilm supplied by the British Library Newspaper Library On the morning of Wednesday se'nnight was drove ashore on Winterton beach, the ship Sundsvall, [captain] Carl Emanuel BRANDT, of and from Lundersfal, in Sweden, bound to Lisbon, laden with timber, deals and tar; the ship is wrecked; the cargo likely to be saved. On Tuesday last was married Mr John OXLEY, late of this city, to Miss Jane MASTERMAN, of London. Sunday last died, Mr NETLEY [might be NOTLEY], aged 68, formerly an eminent upholsterer in this city. Sunday last was married, Mr Joseph FEARMAN, collar-maker, in St Simon's, to Miss S. CHILVERS, of St Andrew's, in this city. On Monday last was married at Crostwick, near Northwalsham, in this county, Capt. John BOND, of Lynn, to Miss Ann CARTER of Happisburgh. By a letter received from Plymouth, we hear, that 104 of the crew of the Hector were landed there, being all that were saved, and that Mr HARVEY, son of Mr HARVEY, schoolmaster, in this city, a Lieutenant of the said ship, died on board. [The following description of the loss of the Hector is taken from the Norfolk Chronicle of 16 Nov 1782, P.2, Col.2. It was not included with the snippets of that date, as there was no evident link with Norfolk at the time I did them.] Extract from a letter from Newfoundland, Oct. 13. "We have just now here a great number of the most miserable objects I ever saw, the crew of the Hector man of war, of 74 guns; they were taken up by a small brig, and brought in here. The Hector had an engagement with two French frigates, which she beat off, after having lost a great many men in [sic] killed or wounded, but a most dreadful gale of wind came on immediately after the action, and she was so leaky, they could scarcely keep her above water. The brig just came in sight as they were going to leave her, and commit themselves to the mercy of the waves in their boat." The fate of the wounded men on board the Hector, of 74 guns, which foundered off the Banks of Newfoundland, is truly pitiable; and what they must have suffered when left by the remainder of the crew (who were taken up by a ship arrived in Ireland) may be more easily conceived than described. The Hector parted from the Jamaica fleet a week before the storm came on, in order to proceed for Halifax; from after she fell in with two large French frigates, who, seeing her in a shattered state, engaged her for some hours, in which a considerable number of Hector's men were killed and wounded. The next day it began to blow hard, when, the leaks greatly increasing upon the crew, a ship appeared, which saved about 200 of the men. The rest were unavoidably left to go down with the vessel, which perhaps might not be for some hours after. Thursday last died, Mrs BRINGLOE, wife of Mr BRINGLOE, tea-dealer, in this city. Charlie, can you tell me what marker 17 means? All the 25 marker tests that have been run so far has a 11 in marker 17. Leathel,
We have new results in that illustrate the importance of having 25 markers tested, instead of just 12. Kits 29401 and 29557 had a 12/12 match on the first 12 markers. Since both traced their Bowles ancestor back to North Carolina, the hope was that they were related. However, 29557's 13-25 marker results just in actually show that there is a genetic distance of 4 between the two kits. Specifically, the two kits are one number off on markers 13, 23, 24, and 25. More about that later. The web page at [http://www.familytreedna.com/gdrules_25.html] gives a good explanation of the concept of genetic distance. It is unlikely at this point, although not impossible, that these two share a common ancestor within the last 500 years. There is however one issue to consider. All 4 of the markers in which these two kits fail to match are known to be markers that mutate at a greater rate, leaving us with the possibility that the common ancestor for these two might exist after all. The only way to know for certain is to have additional participants who also trace their lines to one of these. For example, suppose participant X is tested and matches kit 29401 on all but markers 13 and 23; and also matches kit 29557 on all but 24 and 25. That would place this participant exactly between the two others, matching both at 23/25 with two fast mutating markers as the difference. I realize that this is a bit complicated, but essentially what it means is that the likelihood of kits 29401 and 29557 sharing a common ancestor within the last 500 years is 40.72%. Unless additional tests are done in these two lines that fall between the two, they should not consider themselves as closely related. If you have questions about this, please don't hesitate to ask. I'm searching for information on Martha T. Boles b. about 1862 in Greene Co. TN. Martha was the daughter of David J. Boles b. 1835 Greene Co TN and Mary A. Nelson b. 1835 Greene Co. TN. In the 1870 census for Greene Co, Martha appears as Marthy age 8 in David J. household and as Martha T. age 18 in the 1880 census. I can find no further records of Martha and the descendants of David J.'s and Mary's other children have never heard of a Martha in the family. Martha does not appear in David J.'s household in the 1900 census records. Does anyone have marriage records for Greene Co TN between 1880 and 1900? Any help will be appreciated. I will pay for your test. Richard Jesse BROWN (1859-1935) & Mary Jane BOWLES (1863-1833) I'm not a Bowles descendant myself, but I have some information on this family in Davie Co. and would be happy to share. I'm trying to build a database of all of Davie Co., centering on the 1850 census. However, I don't know who the parents of Mary Jane Bowles Brown were. If anybody can supply that information, it would be very helpful. She was born 12 Aug 1863, died 19 Feb 1933, and is buried at Center United Methodist church in Davie County. James Hanson BROWN (1850-1941) & Emma GLASSCOCK (1858-1951) Chalmers Stroud BROWN ( 1854-1935) & Lucy P. SHOAF (1858-1925) Mack D. BROWN (1863-1941) & Meekie Ann LEACH (1865-1971) These are all grandsons of Cannon Brown and Catherine Hendricks of Davie County. I'm descended from another grandson, William L. Brown, who has a lot of female descendants but no males with the Brown surname. The test requires scraping the inside of your cheek with a swab and mailing that back to the testing company; no blood is involved. You can read more about the testing process and its value for genealogy research on the Family Tree DNA web site: http://www.familytreedna.com/ If you need more information or would like to discuss it further, please contact me directly. -- Elizabeth Harris ncgen@mindspring.com NCGenWeb project: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncgenweb/ (Davie, Forsyth, and Stokes Co. Hi Leathel, Why do you believe that Simon Bowles was the husband of Elizabeth, mother of John Bowles and Rebecca Bowles? My answer, she was mother of Rebecca Bowles, John Bowles was Rebecca Bowles uncle. The facts that Elizabeth Young in her will 1695 claims Bowles Tyler as her grandson. This means that Elizabeth Young was a mother to Rebecca Bowles or James Tyler? William Bowles, son of Edward, in his will 1662 lists Uncle John Bowles and kinsman James Tyre. It took me awhile to figure out which John Bowles he was calling uncle, (John died 1664 or John died 1675). When I found that it was 1673 when John Bowles was granted (Bowles Purchase), I knew which one was uncle. Now Uncle John gave to his nephew (James Tyler,Tyre)(Bowles Purchase). If that was true then John, Edward, and Rebecca Bowles were brothers and sister, and their mother Elizabeth died after 1695. The word nephew meant different things back then and since James Tyre was married to Johns niece, (Simon and Elizabeth Bowles daughter)he called (James Tyre d.1686 who married Rebecca) nephew. Confussed yet? Leathel, This is what I was trying to remember last night. As you can see Elizabeth was Rebecca's mother and John's brother (Simon) was her father, which would make James Tyre that married Rebecca, John's nephew-in-law. "Cousin" was used to designate grandson, nephew,or nephew-in-law; but "nephew" never described a cousin, but nephew or nephew-in-law only. Nephew never meant grandson in Virginia records and certainly "grandson" was never used to designate "nephew" or any other relationship except grandson or great-grandson.

Campbell" <kevi@ivnet.com> Subject: PARSONS/BICKETT et al Apparently, my questions concerning Julia PARSONS and her kin were for naught. I thought my line ran from her, but Judith Berger thinks otherwise. She thinks my great great grandmother Mary Elizabeth BICKETT is the d/o Thomas BICKETTand Martha ELDER, not Arnold BICKETT and Julia PARSONS. I think Judith's version is the third alleged parent I've found for Mary Elizabeth. This search is discouraging and yet interesting. But because I don't come from the PARSONS apparently, then this thread has suddenly gone OT. Sorry 'bout that.
