    1. Bowles DNA Project Update - 9 Apr 2005
    2. Charles Hartley
    3. Just a note to tell you that we now have 19 participants in the DNA project, and several others have expressed an interest in joining. Also, I have updated the project web page at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~gensoup/bowlesdna.html and included some useful links to other pages that contain valuable information about DNA testing. Again, a reminder, if you wish to participate in the project, go to the web page at http://www.familytreedna.com/surname_join.asp?code=W26816&special=true to sign up. Also, if you are unable to participate because of finances, we have several volunteers who are willing to help that way. Just contact me privately and we will make the necessary arrangements. If the lab doesn't get backed up, we should have several new sets of results within the next three weeks. Can you tell I'm excited? Richard, Elizabeth, Jemima Bowles are listed on the ship. ===================================================================== Match: Bowles Source: SOUTH-AFRICA-EASTERN-CAPE-L@rootsweb.com From: Sue Mackay <rhoosesue@yahoo.co.uk> Subject: Extracts from Grahamstown Journal Jan - Feb 1848 Taken from CO53/16 National Archives, Kew, London. The water rose so rapidly that it was impossible to remove any effects from buildings situated near the river. That fine water mill belonging to Mr. WIGGLE Sen. has been completely demolished, he water rushing down with such violence that it carried one of the stones a distance of 700 yards. This stone is nearly eight inches thick and four feet in diameter. My wagonmakerís and smithís establishment, which was carried on at the mill under the superintendence of Mr. WESTERBAR, is quite broken up, the whole of my property there having been swept away, namely ñ 2 new wagons just painted and completed, 4 do. nearly finished, wagon wood for 15 wagons, the whole of my smithís and wagonmakerís tools, new wagon chests, household furniture &c, amounting to at least £800 sterling. In addition to the foregoing I have lost 300 sheep by death, with some damage done to my buildings at the farm on which I re! side. Poor Mr. WESTERBAR is deserving of much sympathy. He has lost his all, only escaping with life and that of his family, and what clothing they wore at the time. He is now dependent on charity, not having saved any tools to recommence his business with. Information has reached us that some portion of the property thus lost has been picked up along the banks of the river. Should this be the case it is hoped that it will be restored, and any person giving information which may lead to the recovery of any of the lost articles will be rewarded for their trouble. W. BEAR

    2. Linne Gravestock
    3. I've just discovered a website of the descendants of Benjamin Whitehead and Mary Elizabeth Swepson of Lunenburg and Mecklenburg Cos., VA, at: http://pages.prodigy.net/procyon/swepson/whitehead.html On it are many documents of the 1700's which trace the families and their activities not only in VA but elsewhere. Some of the names found there could help us put our Bowles families together, so I highly recommend it. Many of these names tie in not only to Bowles but to Jeffries families---so of course I'm eager to see if any of these names ring a bell with anyone on the list. 3. We have a new set of results (kit #31906). I have entered them at our webpage at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~gensoup/bowlesdna.html . It appears that we have another Bowles line to consider. You may be interested in viewing the following pages at Family Tree DNA. http://www.familytreedna.com/kit.html - This page shows you what the kit looks like, and gives general instructions for using it. http://www.familytreedna.com/instructions.html - This page gives you a copy of the collection instructions that come with your kit. It is important that you read them carefully before using the kit. http://www.familytreedna.com/release.html - This page gives you a copy of the release form that comes with the kit. It is important for our Bowles study that you sign and return the release form with the kit. http://www.familytreedna.com/legal.html - This page explains in detail the legal policy followed by Family Tree DNA. It's always important to read this sort of thing. VERY IMPORTANT: You do not want to follow a link on one of these pages to order your kit. If you do it will cost you more and you will not be part of the Bowles Project. Instead you must go to http://www.familytreedna.com/surname_join.asp?code=W26816&special=true which is our project join page. If you have questions, please ask me. Combs, his wife and family. If he turns out to be a part of your family, you might be interested in his sculptors and further history. In a month or so I will be putting images on our web site of some of John Combs' family, sculptors, and quarrying. Peggy Descendants of John William Combs Compiled by Peggy B. Perazzo, Website: Stone Quarries and Beyond <http://www.cagenweb.com/quarries/> 1. JOHN WILLIAM1 COMBS was born Abt. 1841 in New York State(1), and died 14 May 1922 in San Francisco, S.F. Co., CA(2). Notes for JOHN WILLIAM COMBS: "Pen Pictures from the Garden of the World or Santa Clara County, California," 1888. "John W. Combs born in New York State. His father, who was noted for his skills as a mechanic, died in Mr. Comb's boyhood...he never attended school except for 14 months. He started life as a butcher boy, which led him to study the forms and structure of animals, and having natural taste for art, he one day asked a marble cutter for a block of marble, and taking it into his room, he procured an old chisel and mallet, and while setting up with his sick mother, cut the figure of a lamb out of it. He started to learn the trade of marble cutter at 17 years of age, and soon became very expert in figure carving. "Although he never took lessons in art, he has made many pieces, busts, and faces in basso-relievo from photographs...One of his pieces was a basso-relievo of Pope Leo which sold at a Catholic fair for $150. Other pieces have been valued much higher, among them the bust of ex-senator Henry C. McEwen of Dixon, Salina County.* His figure work has taken numerous prizes at fairs and exhibitions." (* "Salina County" should probably be "Solano County.") The following information on his marriages and family is from his granddaughter, Ruth Combs Edvalson: ’ÄúMr. Combs married in Ogdensburg, New York. He lost his wife in 1865, who died leaving two sons and a daughter. Mr. Combs married his present wife in the same city on January 19, 1867. His two sons are both superior workmen in marble. John Combs’Äô first wife was Catherine McDonald the daughter of Ann and Rory McDonald. She was born in Inverness, Scotland March 15, 1836. John William and Catherine were married the 3rd of January 1855 in Ogdensburg, St. Lawrence county, New York. The children of John W. and Catherine Combs were all born in Ogdensburg, New York: John William Jr., born 5 June 1856, died 22 Jan. 1858, Fannie, born 11 Jan. 1853. Married Melvin Mitchell and died 11 Feb. 1922, Angus W., born 12 June 1861. Married Emma L. Kate and died 25 Dec. 1927, John Albert, born 22 Mar. 1863 (never married), died 20 Feb. 1914 in San Diego, Cal., of stonecutters’Äô dust; buried by a friend. ’ÄúJohn William Combs’Äô second wife was Frances M. Rutherford, born 27 April 1841 in Edwardsburg, Canada West. They were married 9 January 1866 in Ogdensburg, St. Lawrence County, New York. They had no children. Her mother’Äôs name was Jannett Rutherford. The mother Jannett died in San Jose 12 October 1887, age 86 years and 27 days. She was also the mother of Mrs. J. Hicks. Her funeral was held 13 October 1887 at 2:00 in the United Presbyterian Church, corner of Santa Clara and Fifth streets, San Jose, California. (funeral notice in possession of Ruth Combs Edvalson) ’ÄúJohn William Combs’Äô third wife was Oreta Calhoun, born 11 July 1862 in Paducah, McCracken County, Kentucky, born to James Caldwell Calhoun and Mary Elizabeth Bowles. They had five children.’Äù Endnotes 1. 1890 Santa Clara County, CA, Great Register of Voters. 2. California Death Index.

Dark blue or black buckram hardbacks with gilt printing, as new, 7-1/2 x 10, volume one contains 674 pages while volume two (biographies) holds 657 pages plus a 64 page surname index. This makes a total of 1, 395 pages. The table of contents alone covers eleven pages; each of the above headings in the title are generously covered and the amount of history and incidents included is incredible. There is a history of each of the townships which gives the source for the township's name, the population, physical characteristics, the pioneers and early settlers, the churches, schools, villages, cemeteries, justices, damages caused by cyclones and other catastrophic events, first elections - this book is just filled with history that was written 110 years ago in 1895; since the county was formed from Allegheny County in 1800, much of this was first hand history - gathered from personal knowledge and from the experiences of their parents and grandparents. There is a really great county map which shows the townships, villages and waterways! Volume Two holds the biographies, many of which go back for generations; although the many portraits are somewhat dark, it is a joy to be able to see the faces of these early pioneers. 3. When I have a little time I keep notes on who has our allied surnames. This time, I noticed the surname "Hildreth." Since it's referring to Bourbon Co., KY, I'd bet that there's a connection between David Bowles and this Payne family and the Hildreths. Marie, if you're looking for more information, you might go to the archives at: http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl Find this, then fill in the name Bowles-L in the slot. When the page comes up put in the surname that you want. You have a lot of surnames in your posting, which means that any number of them might give you more information about your Bayles and Bowles. Yours, Linne From: URMOSER@aol.com----- later changed to: urmoser@cableone.net Date: Fri, 18 Jun 1999 02:44:49 EDT Subject: David & Winnie To: BOWLES-L@rootsweb.com Just had what seems a major breakthrough with the ch of David and Winnie. It seems they were all born in Va., so somewhere there must be a marriage for them. From The History of Kentucky and Kentuckians, Vol. III, Lewis Publishing Co., Chicago, Ill., 1912, pp 1553-1554 WILLIAM B. PAYNE Among the representative residents and successful farmers of Harrison county, Kentucky, may be mentioned William B. Payne, who both as a man and farmer deserves more than a passing notice. Mr. Payne was born at Cane Ridge, Bourbon county, Kentucky, October 22, 1844, a son of William D. and Rachel Franklin [Marrow] Payne. The father was born on the same farm as our subject, at Cane Ridge, Bourbon county, Kentucky, on March 27, 1817, and he died on his farm near Millersburg, Kentucky, in 1897. The mother was born in Bourbon county, Kentucky, between Cane Ridge and Millersburg, in 1824 and died in August 1845. Two children were born of this union of whom one is living, William B. Payne, our subject. His father was married a second time, to Miss Cynthia Frakes, a native of Bourbon county, Kentucky, who died in 1893, the mother of nine children, of whom three are living: Frances Ann, wife of James W. Thorn, of Bourbon county, Kentucky; Emma, wife of Frank E. Herbert, of Millersburg, Kentucky; and Lutie, wife of Horace W. Purdy, of Bourbon county, Kentucky. John Payne, our subject's grandfather, was a native of Virginia and died in 1826, when about forty years of age. He came to Bourbon county about 1800, located at Cane Ridge when that county was all covered with cane brake and married Miss Elizabeth Bowles of Virginia. He cleared his farm and at his death was the owner of some two hundred and thirty acres of land. Our subject's maternal grandfather was William Marrow, a Virginian who came to Kentucky early, locating in Bourbon county, near Cane Ridge, where he was a farmer and also a preacher for years in the Christian church. He married for a second wife Maria Hildreth, who was the grandmother of our subject. He was a well read man. The father of William B. Payne was reared on the farm where he was born in Bourbon county, and was nine years old at the time of his father's death and was reared after that until he was twenty years of age by Peter Bramblet. He then started for himself on a part of hihs father's farm, where he kept bachelor's hall for four years, and then married. In 1855 he sold and removed three and one-half miles northwest of Millersburg, where he purchased another farm and upon which he lived the rest of his life. At his death he owned two hundred and forty acres of land, which he had divided up with his children before his death. In politics he was an old-time Whig and in religion he and his wife were both members of the Christian church. He was a man who thought for himself and was very positive in all his decisions and ideas. As long as he lived he would not allow a Jersey cow on his farm nor allow a pound of tobaccco to be grown on the place. William B. Payne, ouor subject, was reared on his native farm until he was eleven years old, at which time his parents moved to the other farm already mentioned. He attended the common schools and also the Kentucky Wesleyan College, then located at Millersburg, Kentucky, for four years, remaining at home until he married On October 31, 1871, he married Miss America E. Current, a native of Bourbon county, Kentucky, born October 31, 1845, a daughter of Thomas and Precilla [Fisher] Current, both also natives of Bourbon county. 1. Bowles DNA Project Reminder
    2. Charles Hartley
    3. I think it is pretty amazing that we have already had 17 participants in the Bowles DNA Project since we began it near the beginning of the year. However, for us to make it even more meaningful, we need for many others to participate. If your Bowles line is not yet among the ones being tested, I urge you to consider getting involved. If your line is being tested by someone from another branch of your Bowles family, don't let that stop you from getting involved. If you want to get involved but need help financing part or all of the cost, then get in touch with me privately. We have several individuals who are willing to help. If you have no male Bowles descendent for your own line, but would be willing to finance someone from an adjacent line, let that be known either to me privately, or publicly to the list. The only way we are going to see more matches is if more participate. Make a decision this week to participate and go to the join page at [http://www.familytreedna.com/surname_join.asp?code=W26816&special=true] and sign up. Or contact me privately to discuss the financing. Also, spread the word wherever you go to talk about your Bowles genealogy. Thanks!
