    1. Re: Bowles in The Maxeys of Virginia (book)
    2. Linne Gravestock
    3. Welcome to the Bowles list! Maybe with your additions, we'll be closer to piecing the many Benjamins into a larger and more accurate picture. Unfortunately, the reason I added only that little snippet about the Benjamin in my line is because I'm not yet totally certain who his parents were. We can make some pretty good guesses, but we're still looking for the pieces of evidence which will tie everyone in their respective lines together and erase our doubts. We keep chipping away at the various Benjamins, no matter where we happen to find them, and hope that our bits of information will eventually fall into place. There were quite a few Benjamin Bowles (of many spellings) in that general part of the world and it's difficult to sort out which one was which. Would you be willing to add to our pieces of knowledge by telling us all where you found evidence of your Benjamin? A land document? A Revolutionary War document? Best possibility of all: a will naming his wife and all his children? Can you tell us if your Benjamin had any other children, and if so, who they married and where they lived? Maybe with a few more pieces, we can get a clearer picture of your areas of Virginia. Very best, Linne >Hi, >I am new to the list. I am interested in all Benjamin Bowles of Virginia. >Can you tell me where in Virginia your Benjamin is from and if you >know who his >parents are. After the Rev. 3. ===================================================================== Match: Bowles Source: QUAKER-ROOTS-L@rootsweb.com From: Shari Holcomb <sharih@rocketmail.com> Subject: Newfound possibilities for our WEBB and Martin Ancestors: Requesting Aid Hello to the list, Recent matches to our WEBB ancestor DNA have led to several matches and those have now led us to a book in North Carolina. The book is handwritten 1875 quill ink pen book, entitled "Westward We Go" by a Thomas N. Andrew at a Quaker Historical Library in Edenton, North Carolina (it is apparently hand written and the only copy of this book that exists) that details a group of families from Ablemarle County, NC (including Webbs, Bowles, Blaylocks, Reas, Evans, and Wilkersons, among others) who went west in the 1810's. A James Webb (b. 1770) who married a Susan Brinkley (died before 1838) went to Lincoln County, Tennessee. This is apparently the one that our cousin Dave found who in 1819 bought the land his ancestor Hiram Webb lived on later in Lincoln County. James and Susan had several kids and these are detailed so it seems that Hiram is brother to our Joseph and therefor reason enough for a perfect DNA match... Here is where I need a Friend's help out in NC... Since the book is so very fragile, it may not be handled by a person for researching and copying or have its picture taken... We would like to have someone transcribe this book so that we can actually know more about what it may contain... Would someone be interested in doing this for us? It would be vastly appreciated and we would be willing to provide pay or donate for this service... We are also still seeking a marriage or any data for our Joseph Webb and Mariah Barbara Martin. ...Joseph was born around 1798-1809 prob ablemarle, NC and Mariah B. was born 1809 kentucky and would have married around the 1830's and their first known child John W. was born 1835 AL. They would migrate on into Lincoln cty Tn. It is now possible with the finding of this book that they were Quakers... Thank you Shari

    3. ===================================================================== Match: Boles Source: NORCAL-L@rootsweb.com From: Betty <betty@unisette.com> Subject: Sac Bee Sept 28, 1903 Sacramento Evening Bee Monday, September 28, 1903 SAD PASSING OF A BELOVED WOMAN The Bee has received the following communication concerning the death of Mrs. MacEWEN, mention of which is made elsewhere in to-day's paper. The painfully sad circumstances of the passing of this esteemed woman prompts The Bee to publish the letter which comes from one who knew her well in life: To the Editor of The Bee - Sir: Mrs. McEWEN, who died in this city Saturday was a woman of the highest character; and, by her quiet and unobtrusive ways, yet kind and loving heart, endeared herself to all who knew her well. She was born and brought up in a Christian home, where she was surrounded by comfort, and even luxury, and was well educated and refined. Although of a somewhat reserved and retiring disposition, and, perhaps in some respects not well equipped to battle with a hard world, she had such sterling qualities of mind and heart, that she endeared herself to her friends and was greatly beloved by them. While her death is not a surprise, yet it comes as a blow and a loss to those who loved her. She has gone to a well-earned rest, and death comes as a sweet release to her weary body. I must add that bravery was one of the most prominent characteristics of this little woman, and she was proud and independent almost to a fault. She has spent the Summer at the home of Mrs. Felix TRACY, where her failing heart was commented upon, and grieved over. An attack of la grippe some time since left her with a weak heart, and she has had several severe seizures from this cause. It was with reluctance that we saw her go from our home last Monday. She once had a beautiful home of her own, here on earth, now her Father has taken her to the Heavenly Man, alone, and she is enjoying those refinements and beauties that she can so well appreciate. Henry W. Tracy 1706 P Street Sacramento, September 27th DEVINE INQUIRED FOR A DICTIONARY Trustee's Answer Puzzled District Attorney The contempt proceedings against City Trustee James H. DEVINE for refusing to answer certain questions concerning the offer of bribes, put to him by the Grand Jury, were resumed before Superior Judge HART this morning. Devine was on the witness stand nearly all morning. At one point in the testimony District Attorney A.M .SEYMOUR, who is conducting the prosecution, failed to understand an answer he had made to a question. Devine was asked to repeat his answer, and he replied that he preferred to have the Court Reporter read it from his notes. After the answer had been read, Seymour said he still failed to understand it, and Devine asked: "Well, haven't you got a dictionary there?" Judge Hart said he could not understand the answer, either, and instructed Devine to repeat it, which the latter did. Devine insisted in his examination before the Court that no offer of bribes had been made to him since the administration of former Mayors B.U. STEINMAN and William LAND, and beyond being approached on the bond question and the sale of a place at the sump during those periods, he could not recall any specific proposition made to him, or the names of the parties making propositions to influence his vote. He admitted that other propositions had been made, however. Seymour tried to learn how it was that Devine could remember that offers of bribes, besides those relating to the bond question and the position as the sump, had been made to him, and could not remember what these offers related to or who had made them, but Devine could not enlighten him. Frank A. EDINGER, Secretary of the Grand Jury, was placed on the witness stand, and questioned as to whether the examination of Devine had been continued from the morning to the afternoon session of the Grand Jury on a certain day, but the questions along this line were held to be immaterial. A recess was taken until 2:30 this afternoon. When Court reconvened, argument was commenced, the District Attorney opening for the prosecution. He had not finished his argument when The Bee's report closed. Dr. W.O. GIRARDEY, dentist, has removed to Physician's Bldg., 1006 K St. HORSE KILLED IN EXCITING RUNAWAY About noon to-day an exciting runaway occurred on J Street, a team attached to a wagon driven by A. B. MOSHER, and owned by Charles PAINE, taking fright and starting on a mad run up the street. At Seventh Street, Mosher was thrown from his seat on the wagon and was considerably bruised in striking the pavement. The team continued up J Street, and one of the horses struck an iron post in front of the RUHSTALLER building at ninth street. The horse was almost instantly killed, and the post broken off at the level of the pavement. The streets were crowded at the time with pedestrians and vehicles, but the runaway team and the driver were the only ones to suffer injury. TRYING TO SAVE THE BEACHED SHIP SAN FRANCISCO , September 28 - The underwriters who have a fortune at stake by reason of the beaching of the big four-master British bark Gifford south of the Golden Gate, are still confident the vessel can be saved. Lloyd's surveyor, Captain John METCALF, with the master of the wrecked bark, Captain David MICHIE, and Captain Alexander WOODSIDE, have been on the wreck and have made a careful examination of the vessel. Weather permitting, they believe the coal in the Gifford's hull may be thrown overboard and the leaking vessel pulled out of the sand and towed to port. He had been undergoing treatment at Richardson's Springs, twelve miles from Chico, but disappeared from there yesterday morning. He eluded those who were looking out for his welfare, and securing a rifle, proceeded up the canyon. He remarked that he was tired of life, and that he would do away with himself. A search is being made of the surrounding country for Slattery, but up to the present writing no trace of him has been found. 3. We have new results in and the potential for a match. Kit #34109 is an 11/12 match with Kit #31906. Ordinarily we would be very cautious about this until we have further results, but this time both of these claim the same early ancestors - William and Sarah (Gum) Bowles. It may be possible that the mismatch on marker #2 is the result of a mutation in the gene. I'm sure both participants are eager to see the results of the remaining markers (13-25) to see how well they match. Perhaps now would be a good time for me to remind everyone of my policy on sharing information. Whether you are a participant or not, I cannot share the identity of a participant without that person's permission. Once a match is found, Family Tree DNA automatically informs the matching participants of the match and provides each with the other's email address. However, if you wish to be put in direct contact with a participant, what you must do is contact me and request that I forward your name and email address to that participant with a request that he contact you. It will be up to him to follow up. Thanks, Charlie Hartley Bowles DNA Project Administrator [mailto:hartley@iglou.com]

    3. ===================================================================== Match: Bowles Source: GEN-MAT-L@rootsweb.com From: "Helen" <Helenh@pdq.net> Subject: Rutherford County, Tennessee - See Some Names Land Deed Genealogy of Rutherford County, Tennessee, Volume 1, 1804-1813 - Earliest Land Grants on Stones, Duck & Elk Rivers, Helen C. & Timothy R. Marsh, 2001. Blue cloth covered hardback with gilt imprinting, 5-3/4 x 8-3/4, 271 pages, maps (including one showing the waterways), every name index. This book is in as new condition - as are the other two volumes in the set. As each volume has its own index, they will be posted separately; however, if someone wants all three as a set, a price adjustment will be made. The text for each entry comprises almost the entirety of the original deed or grant. These truly are lovely books, and cover not only land, but are used to convey slaves and other items of personal property. All give the names of the parties, the consideration (price), the acreage, the boundaries-given in poles, names of those with adjoining property, dates, and waterways. The Military Grants (most from North Carolina give the warrant numbers both for Tennessee and North Carolina or whatever state the service was rendered in, and if the land was granted to the heirs or to an assignee or to the actual soldier. The book holds a number of estate divisions which are particularly valuable. Per the Introduction, we learn that Rutherford was created by the Tennessee general Assembly on October 25, 1803, with the first court being held January 3, 1804. Created from Davidson and Williamson Counties, and major parts of Bedford, Lincoln, Moore and a small western strip of Coffee Counties were once a part of Rutherford. So, the land transactions herein are applicable for a number of counties. "In 1783 the mother state of North Carolina, surveyed and granted a large tract of virgin land in Middle Tennessee, then North Carolina, to her officers and soldiers of the Continental line, for their service in the late Revolutionary War. The south line of this vast area, called the 'Military Reservation', ran east to west, immediately south of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, the county seat of Rutherford Coutny. Much of the land located in Rutherford was granted in this Military Reservation. Rutherford County, like other Middle Tennessee Counties, suffered some land deed losses, attributed to the Civil War. Fortunately the earliest deeds that included the Military and old North Carolina General Land Grants in Rutherford, Bedford and Lincoln Counties survived the losses. Books G, 1, 3, P, T, V, 6, and 12 did not. This book is a complete, not selected, deed copy." Gasaway Wednesday Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon, November 22, at the Christian Church at two o'clock for Mrs. Murtie Gasaway, who passed away at her home in Glendale, Cal., Thursday, November 16. Mrs. Gasaway had been in very poor health the past eighteen months and her advanced age prevented her from regaining strength to recover. Her brother, J. M. Rothwell, and his wife went to California a short time ago to visit with her. Mrs. Murtie Rothwell Gasaway was the daughter of J. M. and Angeline Rothwell, and was born January 12, 1866 near here. She was united in marriage to Nelson Gasaway on November 8, 1883, and he preceded her in death about 15 years. To this union was born one daughter, Vida May, who became the wife of Leo May, and she also preceded her mother in death, passing away in 1923. She is survived by two brothers, J. M. and T. L. Rothwell of this place, and her son-in-law, Leo May, who accompanied her remains here, and two grandsons, Harold and Joseph May, of Glendale, Cal. Practically her entire life was spent in and near Mt. Pulaski, taking up her residence in California about 12 years ago after she had gone there with her mother for her health. She returned here after her mother's death, but soon went back to California to make her home. She was a member of the Mt. Pulaski Christian Church for many years. Services at the church were in charge of Rev. J. Wayne Staley. Music was furnished by a quartet composed of Mrs. H. C. Gruber, Miss Della Washburn, Frank Turley, and B. A. Tyler, with Mrs. Frank Turley at the organ. Pallbearers were Clarence, Everett, Harry, Robert, and Keith Rothwell, and Wilford Scroggin. Burial was in Mt. Pulaski cemetery. Among those attending the services from a distance were: Grace Rothwell, Champaign; Frank Scroggin, Dawson; Mrs. Rena Drobisch, Chicago; Adam May, Mr. and Mrs. Harry May and Mrs. Margaret Bowles, all of Taylorville; Mr. and Mrs. Tony May, Morrisonville; Mrs. Catherine Sams, Decatur. Friends from various towns in central Illinois were also present.

I put her name as Gardner in my tree because of this: BOWLS, Elijah, 22, single, b Monroe Co to GARDER [GARDNER?[, Emeline, 16, single, b Monroe, 19 May 1853. 3. Hmmm.... In 1850, Elijah, who married Emaline, is living in the household of Martha Bowles, age 45, who is the right age to be his mother. If this Elijah is a son of Hezekiah and Mary, why is his apparent mother in 1850 named Martha? >Charlie, I have this family as part of Elijah Bowles family. >Hezekiah Bowles b.1805 son of Elijah and Mary. 1. Bowles DNA Project - Questions about Haplogroups
    2. Charles Hartley
    3. Several questions have been raised about haplogroups, so I will try to offer some information and also point you to webpages that delve more deeply into the subject. In theory, all humans descend from an original pair. The next three paragraphs are quoted from [http://www.dnaheritage.com/masterclass2.asp]. If you're game for more information, check out this page. "Over time, many mutations in the DNA strand have occurred. The Y-chromosome, whose main job is just to turn on the male baby switch, has also picked up mutations of a particular type as time has passed. This type of mutation is called a SNP (or Single Nucleotide Polymorphism). "These SNP's are so rare as to be considered unique and are passed down faithfully from father to son. Because of this, they have been used to define several broad groups into which every male in the world can be placed in. These broad groups are called haplogroups. "As man has migrated around the world over time, these haplogroups can be used to trace their paths. This is incredibly useful and is an extra tool used alongside archaeological and linguistic data. Because some haplotypes (from STR tests) are found to be common within particular haplogroups, it is very often possible to make a prediction of what your haplo group is from your haplo type." Your haplotype is indicated by your Y-DNA markers. In theory your haplotype can be categorized into a particular haplogroup based on how well it matches the haplotypes known to belong to each haplogroup. When you get your Y-DNA results back from Family Tree DNA they indicate the haplogroup it appears that you belong in based on your marker values. To verify this with certainty, they offer an additional test (cost $65) that will determine your haplogroup. Family Tree DNA has a page at [http://www.familytreedna.com/hap_explain.html] that gives more information about haplogroups. So why would you want to know your haplogroup? Curiosity perhaps. What it will possibly tell you is where your far-distant ancestors lived (in very broad terms). The webpage at [https://home.comcast.net/~whitathey/predictorinstr.htm] provides an interactive form that allows you to enter your marker values and see what the likelihood of belonging to any particular haplogroup is. I can't personally vouch for this tool, but it appears to be valid. Personally, I don't see a tremendous value in paying extra to see if your haplotype is really what they estimate it to be. If you do, go for it. Hope this helps to clear up some of the confusion. Charlie Hartley Bowles DNA Project Administrator [mailto:hartley@iglou.com]
