    1. Bowles DNA Project Update - 26 Apr 05
    2. Charles Hartley
    3. New results are in, and we have an interesting situation developing. Kit #29356 and kit #29524 are a 25/25 match, and now we have kit #29596 with an apparent genetic distance of -1 over 25 markers (more about that in a minute). The interesting thing is that they may represent three branches of the same family. Kit #29356 traces back to William and Mary (Austin) Bowles who appear to have had most of their children in/near Wythe County VA, although William himself was probably born in North Carolina. William was born about 1804 and died after 1880, probably in Bland County VA. Kit #29524 traces back to John and Margaret (Anderson) Bowles. John was born in 1777 in Virginia, and died in 1859, probably in Albemarle County VA. Kit #29596 traces back to Thomas and Sarah (Holman) Bowles. Thomas was born in 1761 in Hanover County VA. He died there in 1839. I need to try to explain the genetic distance thing I mentioned earlier. The issue is with the last 4 markers (22-25). These 4 markers are to be considered a set, and their order may not always be accurately portrayed in the list. For example, look at the actual scores for these three: 29356 - 13 15 15 18 29564 - 13 15 15 18 29596 - 13 13 15 15 At first glance it appears that we have a mismatch at two places, but all three have 13 at a location, and 15 at two locations, so the only true mismatch is with the fourth location: 18 versus 13. Think of it this way: 29356 - 13 15 15 18 29564 - 13 15 15 18 29596 - 13 15 15 13 These four markers are also perhaps the fastest mutating ones in the whole list of 25. It seems very likely that these three share a common ancestor within the last 300-500 years. If you have questions about any of this, please ask. 3. Hi Randi. Can I suggest you try www.genesreunited .com this is a UK site, that is used for TV geneaology Programs. Used it to find my only Bowles line fron 1760. Today this site connected me with another Coker connection. Brian Coker Randi Meetzen wrote: > Hello. I see a lot of Bowles researchers on the list from our lovely southern states. Are any of you working on where and when your people came from? My Bowles group came from England late in the game,1855, and settled in Ohio. I am having a lot of trouble finding a point of origin in England. They are not on any of the ship immigration lists that I have researched and I have tried a wider year span and many spellings of the name Bowles, but still no Richard, Diana, William and George. They are on the US. Fed Census in Huron Co. Ohio in 1860 and there son George was born in England in 1854 so it narrows the time frame. So anyone who is researching Bowles in England please email me !!!!!! I thought I had my ggrandpa George but after I sent to England for the birth certificate ,I found it was the wrong Bowles family. So Help me if you can. Best Regards, Randi

I am assuming that it was an automatic contact to you from my new "Signature" that I am using for the Gloucester List. It has some of my research names now attached. I will refrain from joining your list at present as I have a really large puzzle over 3 sets of William and Sarah WILTON all alive arround 1840 whom I am desparately (and with the help of the Glo. group) trying to "attach" to the correct family lines. 1. David and Isaac Bowles
    2. This post is in reference to Brenda's post about David and Isaac Bowles who married Mary Kear as being brothers. You will also see that this is not correct when you look at his will.(Isaac Bowles, Jr., the son of James(Isaac) Bowles and Mary Bowles, 2/3 of a tract of 300 acres.) Should be Isaac not James. John did have brothers James and Isaac and a father Tobias Bowles. Mary Kear married a Reece before Isaac Bowles. Isaac Sr. made a will dated 23 Aug 1701 and proved 7 Jun 1709. Isaac is mentioned with Tobias in 1699, no mention of John, he was in Talbot Co in 1699. You can add these two to the Tobias Bowles family tree.If you think David is a brother, you can add him too? Leathel, Kent Co,Md 6 March 1690 John Bowles purchased from Cornelius Comegs and his wife Rebecca 300 acres called COMEGGYS FARMS. On 7 May 1691 John Bowles of Kent County conveyed to his brother Isaac Bowles and Mary his wife of the same county, and after their decease to Isaac Bowles, Jr., the son of James(Isaac) Bowles and Mary Bowles, 2/3 of a tract of 300 acres (200ac) called COMEGGYS FARM lately in the occupation of Cornelius Comegys, of Kent Co Gentleman, and now in the occupation of Isaac Bowles. 1. Re: Bowles in The Maxeys of Virginia (book)
    2. In a message dated 4/24/2005 6:31:08 P.M. Eastern Standard Time, Luckyhummer@aol.com writes: Their first son is named Benjamin H. Bowles b. 1793 in Bedford died in 1864 of consumption in Bedford Co., VA Mary Bowles, his sister married Edward TAylor Elizabeth Bowles another sister md. Richard P. Anderson Jane "Jincy" Bowles, yet another sister md Joseph Parker or Barker Sarah Bowles md. William P. Anderson and Zenith Virginia Bowles md. Elijah Wills Here are a few comments on this family and possible links: 1. My line in NC (also a Benjamin Bowles) has ties to Parkers from southern VA (Brunswick and Lunenburg Co. area). Other surnames connected with this Parker line in VA are Garrett, Simmons, Ragsdale, possibly Crowder. All of these families moved south to the Bute/Franklin Co. area of northern NC. Also, there were connections between Parkers and Andersons in the 1600s -- eastern VA. 2. John Bartley Bowles who died in Iredell Co. NC married in Brunswick Co. VA Elizabeth Barker. Her line is pretty well researched, so she is definitely a Barker, not a Parker. 3. My line also may have connections to the Wills surname. There are connections between a Benjamin Bowles and Matthew Wills in Amelia Co. VA. Then later, a Jeremiah Bowles appears at the estate sale of Matthew Wills in Bute Co. NC, the same area where my Benjamin Bowles was located after the Rev. War. 4. Mary Ann Null's Bowles line may also be connected to Wills. Her line descends from Sarah Bowles who d. abt 1783 in Caswell Co. NC. Sarah's husband has not been identified, but he may be the Benjamin Bowles who appeared in Amelia Co. records in 1750 with wife Sarah (see record below). Her line also married into the Miles Wells line -- possibly part of the same Wills line. I'm not sure this tells you much. I think there's some evidence that branches of the same Bowles line migrated both south and west resulting in common connections between lines in western VA and in KY and in northern NC. The big question, of course, is who is the original ancestor who creates the common link for all these families. Do you have anything concrete on the Robert Bowles who is supposed to be father of Benjamin who died in Cumberland Co.? The Farquar book mentions a Robert as connected to Mary Ann's line, but none of us have ever found any documentation on the guy. I will copy some records below that are related to the connections discussed above. Hope this is somewhat helpful. Brenda Pflaum From Amelia Co.: Book 6 pg 50, Mar. 26, 1757. 2. In a message dated 4/24/2005 3:26:14 A.M. Eastern Standard Time, linne@gravestock.name writes: The book is handwritten 1875 quill ink pen book, entitled "Westward We Go" by a Thomas N. Andrew at a Quaker Historical Library in Edenton, North Carolina (it is apparently hand written and the only copy of this book that exists) that details a group of families from Ablemarle County, NC (including Webbs, Bowles, Blaylocks, Reas, Evans, and Wilkersons, among others) who went west in the 1810's. There was one Bowles line in the far eastern area of NC that was part of the Quaker meeting around Pasquotank Co. NC. I suspect this is the line mentioned in the book described above. This Bowles line went west to Indiana along with a big Quaker migration out of NC. Albemarle Co. was an original NC county and was abolished in 1739. 2. Tim Mattingly
    3. BOWLES researchers, I have very little info on my BOWLES line and I only have the name because of finding that Abraham DITTO married Mary BOWLES in 1738 IN Baltimore Co.,MD. The married notice said her father was "..Joseph BOWLES..", and was hoping that some BOWLES searchers would know something from the data I had. Abraham DITTO was born Sep.14,1718 in MD and Mary BOWLES was born about 1720. Abraham and Mary had 8 children and that is all I have. Any cousins out there? Tim Tim Mattingly gtm.3@insightbb.com

    1. Where are your Bowles's from
    2. Randi Meetzen
    3. Hello.

    3. Anna Wright Williams has a fascinating website where she's posted many photographs of her large family tree. They connect to many of the Boles families on our list. And if you haven't yet looked at the book "Smith-Garrett and Allied Families of Overton, Fentress and Pickett Counties, Tennessee" by Oma Smith---know that a number of the surnames in Anna's tree also appear in that book. You might be able to discover more about your related families there. 2. Linne Gravestock
    3. Brenda, yours is a very generous offer, made from the heart. But that's the whole point: the Quaker Historical Library in Edenton, Chowan Co., NC is *not* letting this book into anyone's casual handling. If you were to transcribe it, you'd have to go to that one library to see it. If it's like other libraries with rare books, you have to lock up your purse and notebook---whatever you have with you---in a locker, rent gloves to handle it and sit beside a desk with a monitor in attendance, and copy it on their paper, with a pencil. I haven't been to that library, so I don't know if that scenario is a fact, but it is in other libraries that house rare books and let people handle them at all. This has been the limitation up to this point---we don't have someone who lives near the book who can or who wants to do the task...If you're near the library in question, I'm certain that Shari would love to hear from you. Yours with gratitude, Linne >_sharih@rocketmail.com_ (mailto:sharih@rocketmail.com) >I would love to transcribe you book if it is legible. How could you allow >this book out of your hands? The book is handwritten 1875 quill ink pen book, entitled "Westward We Go" by a Thomas N. A James Webb (b. 1770) who married a Susan Brinkley (died before 1838) went to Lincoln County, Tennessee. This is apparently the one that our cousin Dave found who in 1819 bought the land his ancestor Hiram Webb lived on later in Lincoln County. James and Susan had several kids and these are detailed so it seems that Hiram is brother to our Joseph and therefor reason enough for a perfect DNA match... Here is where I need a Friend's help out in NC... Since the book is so very fragile, it may not be handled by a person for researching and copying or have its picture taken... We would like to have someone transcribe this book so that we can actually know more about what it may contain... Would someone be interested in doing this for us? It would be vastly appreciated and we would be willing to provide pay or donate for this service... We are also still seeking a marriage or any data for our Joseph Webb and Mariah Barbara Martin. ...Joseph was born around 1798-1809 prob ablemarle, NC and Mariah B. was born 1809 kentucky and would have married around the 1830's and their first known child John W. was born 1835 AL. They would migrate on into Lincoln cty Tn. It is now possible with the finding of this book that they were Quakers... Thank you Shari

    3. We're always eager to welcome another one into our boat! None of the surnames are (so far) in my personal Bowles tree, but someone else among us might be able to recognize them. I know that the surname "Anderson" appears as a first name in several branches and generations of Bowles. I think that you best bet right now would be to go through our archives, searching for your surnames, one at a time and in each year. It's a tedious business, but you're in good company. We'll cheer you on---even when you find the smallest tidbit! You might get lucky if you put Zenith in the box that asks for your request. We don't get a lot of children named Zenith Virginia, so she could really help you unlock your Bowles puzzles. Here's the URL you need to search the Bowles list archives (or any RootsWeb archive): http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl Find this, then fill in the name Bowles-L in the slot. When the page comes up put in the surname that you want. When you find something, be sure to come back and tell us what you see! War so many were moving to KY, TN, and westward I am trying to keep track. My line is Benjamin Bowles of Cumberland Co. VA whose son Elisha (b. c 1758) md Elizabeth Chapman, also of Cumberland Co. VA - they migrated to Bedford Co. VA.
